Radio Moscow Interferes With 1 040 kHz Stations

"It's 4:00, and this is Scott Robbins on the station the Russians can't get rid of." That's the new sign-on at WHBOIPiellas Park (Tampa) since last Sunday, when Radio Moscow f l d e d the U.S. 1040 lrHz frequency, caw ing interference to 16 U.S. stations.

The Soviet broadcast was presumed to be coming fmm a Cw ban transmitter at a p e r of 300.003 w a b . WHBO PD Mini said. "?he FCC called us M Friday and requested that we v h M y godarlrsotkyddmonitortbe signal. 'Ihey didn't want UF to make a big deal about it."

WYFXIBoynton Beach. FL was also contacted by Lhe Commission. WYFX Presided Guy Liewis's prepared statement for the station's formal complaint filing with the FCCsays, "RadioMmcow is estimated to be -rating at 300.003 w a b , six time5 Lhe power of any U.S. station. If it ever broad- cast at night. Radio Mosmw would cover the entire U.S. and parts of Canada."

While W' declined to say more abmt the Soviet hnmm son. WHBO's Robbini told R&R that the >minute off-air interlude was announced in advance to li5 teners. "Some people thcught this was just a publicity stunt," k said. The station received hundreds of calLF after "Radio Mm'ow came bmming in." Robbim said. ?he sit- uation was covemi by a local tele vision station. Cable News Net work, and ABC's "Good Moming America."

Interference to WHBO was n o ticeable the whole day, according to Robbim, especially on Lhe open mike. "Aside fmm the fad that it's duunnphl boruy, it's garbage - pmpaganda ." Robbins commented

Radio Favorite Medium In West Geman study ( KPPL Aertainty .'

Germany. Big surprise was revealed by a

detailed studv o f "Media Pcrs~ec- 13 uve," dealing wllh mass communi- cation i n Germany rincc 1964.

The average Well Gerinan lunes I . i n his radio two hours and 35 ~ninutes dally, 21 minutes more lhan tp,,- five years ago; and two hours and 0-f

foul minutes - lour minutes les5 than five years ago - viewing tv.

On an average day, 77% of Ger- man5 5pend some tune listening l o radio, a climb 017% from five Year5 ago, while 74%, 6Vo less than five hears belore, reserve some spare time Tor tv.

Reasons Tor the change are many -during the last year, private radio has been given the go-ahead In Ger- manv. with manv sounkv and livc- ly l o f j l shows. ~ a d i b pro;ides inter- national highlights, and tlnle, weatl~er and road reports every hour - it's difficult to obtain this info via tv except at night.

Radio airs continuou%ly i n Ger- many while tv ends around mid- night and starts the next morning. when only housewives, latenight workers and retirees can view.

Interestingly, German viewers. listeners and readers are very skep- ~ ~ c a l . Only 30% feel tv presents a true and objective depiction o f the news. 25% feel radio IS true and ob- jective in newscasts, and daily news- papers have the fewot believers - 20% Tlnd dailies objective.

The average German today spends only 33 minutes - five minutes less than rive years ago - reading papers, so radio and tv are much more influential in bringing infor- mation and entertainment.

The strange saga of KPPL Raho 1s about lo end. w ~ t h the announcement Thursday that the belea- guered slatlon w ~ l l be purchased by a group headed by longitme Denver radlo man John M c G m e s s .

McGulnness, who is among Denver's most re- spected broadcasters, is paylng Denver Federal Bankruptcy Court $250,000 for the station. a f l p r e thal mlght be regarded as a bargam, except that KPPL 1s a statlon w ~ t h vtrtually no advertisers, no audlence and lew physlcal assets.

KPPL, at 1390 on the AM hal, has been the focus o l one of the more bizarre stones i n Denver broad- cast luslory. The statton went on the a u as KFML ("Flne MUSIC Llstenmg") i n 1954 and reached its zeruth In the late '60s and early '70s as Denver's lus t underground hippie rock statlon. I t was purchased i n 1982 by Golden Bear Communicat~ons, owned by would-be entrepreneur Denny Workman, and briefly played jazz under the call letters KJJZ. The next vear 11 became KPPL.

Worhan , as i t turned out, knew htt le about suc- cessful broadcasting. Soon KPPL lound i tsel l i n deep trouble wi th the Federal Communtcations Commlsslon, which m May 1985 took the highly un- usual step of kicking the statlon off the air for gross lederal broadcast law violations.

KPPL remamed silent for the next 19 months as Workman's vartous ventures, lnclhding radlo stations I n Oregon and Georgia, wallowed m bank- ruptcy courts. The feds, however, frown on broad- cast licenses that are not being used, and last De- cember ordered the station to get back on the a u or surrender ~ t s hcense.

Stnce the broadcast permlt was virtually KPPL'S only asset, lederal bankruptcy trustee Linda S~der- tus hastened to save the hcenye and hued Denver broadcast englneer T tm Cutforth to rush KPPL back Into operation w ~ t h a format of unmterrupted soft Inuslc. S~derlus tlus week reached a deal wtlh the McGutnness group.

McGunness became one of Denver's best known broadcasters as an executive of KIMN from 1971 to 1976. I l e then became involved i n the advert~smg bustness, and most recently has been workmg as an

A Japanese &ceptim Season of 266 Days a Yeax

Gene - 3303 East Evans Avenue - Cenver, CO 80210 With the a r r iva l of another May it is t h t o r e p r t again on my study of

J a m e s e recewtion here i n Denver a s &sclosed i n the dai ly checking out of JOIB-747 in sappro .

JOIB is t h e fa r thes t north m j o r s tat ion i n Japan, located on Hakkaido, an is land with an almost Arctic c l i m t e , although i t 's no fa r ther north than the Minnesota-Iowa border i n the U. S.

In 1986, JOIB made its l a s t appearance of the season for me on May 6. In 1987, lts f i n a l appearance carre on May 9, only a BFD c a r r i e r a t 1040 and 1055 CMT. After May 9, I assume the increasing hours of daylight In Far Northern la t i tudes prevents t h e JOIB signal from making it t o Denver. And i f 1987 behaves i n the same m e r that 1986 did, I can expect JOIB t o return near the midde of August as night expnds i n Far Northern lat i tudes.

Between August 16, 1986, when JOIB returned for a new DX'ing season, t o May 9, 1986, when it disappeared i n its s m r t i m e hiatus, is 266 days. I f you take December out of the calculat ion, you have 235 days. I wmt to deal with these 235 days inasmuch a s my De&r record-keepin< is i n m p l e t e .

Then out of t h a t 235 days, I was able t o locate the s i g ~ l from JOIB on 183 early mornings i n Denver, always i n the area from 1000 t o 1200 W. I found i t s s ignal 6 days i n Auoust. 16 in Seotember, 25 davs i n October, 23 i n N o v d r , 31 days i n January, 22 i n -~~ >~~ . ~

February, 28 i n ~ k c h , 28 daysAin April, and f i n a l l y 4 days i n May. The only conspicuous period i n these months when the JOIB signal fa i led t o lMke it t o

Denver was Septenber 12 t o 21, 10 days, perhaps a b i t ea r ly for tha t f m u s DX'ing feature, the Midwinter AnoMly.

As t o t h a t an i t ted kmrkr record, the JOIB signal made it t o Denver the f i r s t ten days of the month and the l a s t th ree days.

Bebeen these t h s , I was i n Texas, and I found the JOIB het on a t l e a s t 4 occasions on the 750 kHz stat ions I heard there on my G3 portable travel radio.

The H, a s it af fec t s reception of Eurpoean signals i n Denver, i s nothing l e s s than the 100 percent disappearance of than, no t race for long periods of time, extending for months rather than veeks. In the best Dx'ing seasons for Europeans, t h e i r s igna ls a r e found on mybe four or f ive nights i n Septemter+Xtober and ear ly Navenber, and by C h r i s t n m s t h , t h e i r season is usually over for another year.

Hearing.Japan and the other Northern Asiat ics is a t o t a l l y different ba l l g m . They shod up i n August and mntinue to be heard through f a l l , winter, and spring. In midwinter, the best of than rrake it t o Denver a s ear ly a s 0700 and s tay with m t o beyond 1400 hours.

European signals never l a s t fo r hours a t a s t re tch , instead often fading out a f t e r an opening of no more than an hour o r ism.

A Midwinter AnoMly of the sort t h a t wipes out Northern Europeans simply never Ekes an appearance on the *stern U. S. and Japan path.

Albert Lobel is the l a t e s t Arrerican Dx'er t o return f r m a v i s i t t o Europe f i l l e d with adniration for the mndit ions found there i n the continental broadcast band. The stat ions on adjacent channels separate neatly with a m i n b of splash and crosstalk between them, and even nqawat te rs can be tuned out i n 9 kHz. Plus the European AM'ers transmit f ine audio quali ty, not rmch d i f fe ren t £ran FM sound.

I have examined the European E?CB on tw occasions, the f i r s t time from London, m i n l y , and Paris for three weeks in December, 1976, and from Frankfurt fo r a couple of w&s in August, 1980.

Every Arrerican D x ' e r ought t o v i s i t Europe a t l e a s t once, i f fo r no other reason than t o fu l ly understand hcw the U. S. I can never claim t h a t I understand e v e e n g which has happened t o broadcasting i n the U. S., but I can see without any d i f f i c u l t y t h a t a s a resu l t of a l l the c h g e s , the AM broadcast scene i n the U. S. is a d i sas te r area in its cun ricrht. Radio l i s teners have

Another thing t o wonder about is whether the widespread abuses and scandals tFsetting the ranks of the ?V evangelists w i l l not have serious lmpl i w t ions for the lmre t h a n 700 U. Their [>lc>a is "send money i f you want t o be saved!" They bring the w1d "Christian" i n t o disrepute.

I have an excellent reason for the use of tha t harsh language inasmudl a s I am the f i r s t Martin i n four generations who did not b e a m a Methodist minister .

Contributions a r e already fa l l ing off for a l l the l V ~ v a n g e l i s t s , and I muld bet the sam thing is happening f o r t h e i r radio colleagues.

A t the s m time, pious folk have begun t o return t o the i r n e i g h b o r h d churches which never benefitted f r m the Big Bucks garnered by the lV and radio evangelists.

I w i l l r i s k a prediction: A l o t of those religious s ta t ions w i l l be going bankrupt in the next few months, o r t rying t o f ind new buyers who w i l l probably mm i n with d i f fe ren t f o m t s .

He dictated the v/l to a secretary, mntioning WIXZ's day and night tower S i tes were relocated to give the area a be t te r signal. The day i s inside Pgh i n Glen Hazel and the night is on a 4-tcwer array a t Lincoln Baro. Since he will be unrel iable ( a l s o a CE f o r WJAS and WEIX)) , I asked f o r help f ran Dick Grimes, now a consultant a t WIXZ who re t i red a s PD back i n August, but the new cuner asked him t o am back on a part-time basis. Mr. Grimes previously wrked a t WIBG i n Phil ly ad formed a l iaison w i t h fonrer Mayor Frank Rizzo, WKBW, KQV, WEEP, and a t WKQ, now WJAS. Finally, Annie, aka Kathy Comides' goal is to cun a s ta t ion or w r k a t WBIS in NYC.

So busy, a s the c 3 called ahead, the secretary instead of typing my v/l, just toak h i s scribble of f a paper and mpied it cnto t h e i r letterhead! They use a 3-tower days and 4 tmrs nights.
