The Shaloh HaKadosh (Parshas Lech Lecha) notes that many psukim in Tanach refer to the Eretz Yisrael as Eretz Kenaan even after Bnei Yisroel had arrived and conquered the land. Why do the psukim call it Eretz Kenaan instead of the seemingly more suitable name Eretz Yisrael? The Shaloh enlighten us to a most important, fundamental concept. He says that as we know, Kenaan was cursed by his grandfather Noach that his descendants would forever be a nation of slaves. Thus the name Kenaan is synonymous with slavery. Additionally, the root of the word Kenaan is כנעas in “hachna’ah” - submissiveness or surrendering. Thus the name Kenaan indicates obedience and compliance, as well as slavery. It is because of those very insinuations invoked by the name Kenaan that Hashem deliberately chooses to call the holy land by this name. Hashem calls it Kenaan because He wants us to know that we have no innate rights to the land. It is not a typical inheritance that has now become ours. Our dominion over the holy land depends on how obedient and compliant we are to Hashem’s Torah, and to what extent we submit and enslave ourselves to Hashem. (hence the common term עבודת ה׳as in the word “eved” - slave). If we free ourselves of this attitude, says the Shaloh HaKadosh, if we will no longer be obedient and compliant to God, if we will not submit and enslave ourselves to Him and His Torah, we thereby relinquish any and every grasp we may have had on the holy land. We must submit ourselves and be slaves of Hashem, nothing less. It is for this very reason that Hashem enslaved us in Egypt for so many years (210) before taking us out and giving us His Torah. These are the words of the Holy Shaloh: “Hashem wanted to implant into their beings the nature of enslavement and to accustom them to servitude, so that it would be easy for them to then be slaves to Hashem, and they would easily keep the Torah and do its commandments as slaves.” Am Yisrael’s enslavement in Mitzrayim is what is to serve as an intensive introductory training course, preparing them to be experts slaves of G-d, Avdei Hashem. Accordingly, the entire enslavement and exodus, the Yetzias Mitzrayim itself, was for the express purpose of Klal Yisroel entering into a life as trained and qualified mitzva performers, accustomed to living life for the sake and will of their master. The entire punchline of Shi’abud Mitzrayim and Yetzias Mitzrayim was so that from then on our single minded focus would be the fulfillment of Hashem’s Mitzvos.

Special Commemoration The 26th Teves, marked the 7th yahrtzeit of HaRav Shlomo Leib Brevda Zt”l, a prolific author and Maggid who traveled around the world for about 60 years delivering Divrei Chizuk at the behest of his Rebbi, Harav Chatzkel Levinstein. Rav Brevda was born in Crown Heights, Brooklyn in 1931. His father, Rabbi Moshe Yitzchak Brevda, had brought his family to the United States from Baranovich, Poland shortly before Shlomo’s birth. Growing up as an average American boy, he attended Yeshiva University’s Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary (RIETS) with plans to pursue a college education. However, he was advised by RIETS’s Rabbi Yeruchom Gorelik to pursue his learning elsewhere; thus, he joined the Mir Yeshiva that came to New York following its miraculous escape from the Holocaust. At Mir, Rav Brevda became a disciple of the famed tzadik, HaRav Chatzkel Levenstein, the yeshiva’s mashgiach. Eventually Rav Chatzkel moved to Eretz Yisrael, so Rav Brevda went on to Lakewood where he became a talmid of Harav Aharon Kotler Zt”l. Rav Shlomo developed a very close kesher with the Rosh Yeshivah, so close, that when he wanted to leave Lakewood for Eretz Yisrael to rejoin Rav Chatzkel, Rav Aharon asked him to stay, saying “The yeshivah will close and everyone will leave if you leave.” Rav Shlomo was only granted permission to leave if he would sneak out and not tell anyone. He indeed did so, and sailed to Eretz Yisrael a trip that took two months, and the boat almost sank twice. Upon arrival Rav Brevda settled in Yerushalayim. The Holy Land in the 1950s offered the young bachur a plethora of unique opportunities. He drew near many Gedolim, but gained an exceptionally close relationship with the Brisker Rav and the Chazon Ish. “Let in the American bachur!” the Chazon Ish would exclaim upon seeing Rav Shlomo during his visits to Bnei Brak. Rav Shlomo would speak with the Brisker Rav in learning for a half hour to an hour, a daily Seder that took a tremendous exertion on Rav Shlomo’s part. The Brisker Rav was known for his sharpness and disinterest of those who wanted to talk just for the sake of talking. So Rav Shlomo would prepare for close to ten hours each day for the hour long discussion. It was apparent that the Rav enjoyed these sessions. One day he asked Rav Shlomo where he learned. “I’m waiting for the Rav to open a yeshivah,” Rav Shlomo responded boldly. “A yeshiva for one Bachur?” the Rav replied. “A yeshivah needs at least two bachuirim, so that they could have a chavrusa. Get another bachur and we will open a yeshivah.”Shortly afterward, the Brisker Yeshivah opened for two Bachurim on Press St., with Harav Berel Soloveitchek Zt”l, the Brisker Rav’s son, giving the shiurim. One condition the Rav placed on the Yeshivah’s opening was that the two Bachurim not tell anyone in the world. And, indeed, for six months nobody knew of its existence, including the Chazon Ish with whom Rav Shlomo would visit and learn from time to time. After six month The Brisker Rav call in Rav Shlomo and said to him “I see you are a ne’eman,” I can trust you, you know how to keep a secret, the Brisker Rav told Rav Shlomo after the first zman was over. “I sent people to check up on you and you indeed did not tell anyone. I am now publicizing the Yeshivah and you will become a Ben Bayis by me 24-7.” While learning in Brisk, word of his Hasmadah and success in Torah was reaching his old neighborhood in Brooklyn NY. Prospective fathers-in-law wanted him for their daughter, with one even offering a $250,000 Nadan and another $750,000. etc. Rav Shlomo consulted with Rav Chatzkel, who had in the meantime become Mashgiach in Ponovezh, who told him to turn them all down. “If you want a happy life,” Rav Chatzkel said, “make sure you marry a poor girl from a Torah’dige house. Because with too much money one can never have a happy life.” Taking this advice literally, Rav Shlomo rejected any Shidduch with wealth in the family — even as several Rabbanim vied for him. He finally married his Rebbetzin, the daughter of Reb Avraham Boruch Greenblatt, a tremendous Masmid, who lived with his 11 children in a one-bedroom apartment (Harav Efraim Greenblatt Ztl, the former Rav of Memphis Tenn., was one of those 11 children.) Following Rav Shlomo’s marriage, Rav Chatzkel informed him that “his tafkid in the world is to speak and inspire people of all ages to Avodas Hashem.” That assignment was difficult for the young man, who admitted that “I was so shy [as a child] that when my mother would ask me to go to the neighbor to get milk I would run to my room to hide.” Throughout his life, Rav Brevda traveled the globe to countless shuls, schools, seminaries, yeshivos and kollelim to teach about avodas Hashem, as per his Rebbi’s instructions. He was considered by many as their personal mashgiach.
