Ellicottville Career and Technical students in the Natural Resources class recreated history by constructing the log home that was built by Christopher Stone, the fi rst settler in the town Concord in 1807. The original site is located in the village of Springville on North Buffalo Street. The specifi cations for the cabin were taken from original docu-ments and the cabin is now on the original site. The Natural Resources students cut the trees for the cabin and built it indoors this past winter. The cabin was then disassembled and taken to the site for reassembly this past week. John Baronich, former principal at the Ellicottville Career Tech Center and current Springville Middle School principal, was instrumental in coordinating this project. The cabin will be open to the public dur-ing Springville’s Dairy Fest the weekend of June 2.

The Randolph Middle School Odyssey of the Mind team recently competed at the State Level at Binghamton University on March 30 after winning at regionals. Team members (shown at left) include Cody Austin, Adam Ditcher, Zec Kehoe, Liam McDonald, Ian Meyer, Josie Milks, and Holden Snyder.

They performed the same Long-Term problem, but again had to face an unknown spontaneous problem. They worked as a team to succeed.

The team placed 3rd in spontaneous, and 6th

overall out of 17 teams. Great job for the fi rst state competition!

Recently named winners, in the H & K Publishing Adcraft competition, are (shown below, l-r): Annie Shields and Kristin Carr. Their ad designs were published in the Gowanda Pen-nysaver as a project for Mrs. Ward’s Advertising Design class, as well as for their career portfolios. The girls were awarded a certifi cate and a mon-etary prize for their efforts.

The Portfolio Project is an initiative of the NYS art teachers that was de-veloped in cooperation with the New York State Education Department. It is an assessment that is based on the New York State Learning Standards, and provides students with an oppor-tunity to present their art portfolios at regional adjudication sites.

The adjudication is derived from the performance indicators for each of the standards that describe what stu-dents should know and be able to do. Participation in the assessment allows students the opportunity to refl ect on their artwork, select and prepare spe-cifi c pieces, and learn how to assemble a portfolio. The portfolio adjudication can provide a valid and reliable source for verifi cation of student success in the visual arts.

Randolph Central School was for-tunate to have several students attend the 2007 Art Portfolio Adjudication, at the BOCES site in Salamanca on May 10 where they joined other art students from schools in Cattaraugus and Al-legany counties.

Attending from the middle school were Rachel Schank, Katie Smith, Abby Kight, Cody Austin, Kayleane Chase, Chris Buvoltz and Ashley Gonzalez, while representing the high school were Kristin Carr, Emma Cook, Brianna Loop and Katie Walters. The students were accompanied by their art teachers: Ms. Barbara Rohrer, who led a workshop in pastel drawing; and Mrs. Barbara Ward, serving as an adjudicator.

Students competed in the Southern Tier FIRST Lego League Tournament and Season Finale on Saturday, April 21, presented by Cattaraugus Allegany BOCES. The competition was held at Wellsville Middle School where teams from Fillmore, Franklinville, Allegany, Wellsville and Randolph competed. The Randolph Lego team successfully completed four missions in two and a half minutes and was awarded the “Against All Odds” certifi cate.

Close to 100 students and parents came to learn about our local wild animals April 25 in the elemen-tary library. The Audubon Society Live Animal program teaches about amphibian and reptile life in our region, and there were many specimens present to pet and learn about. In the photo at left, Jacob Bulich is shown observing a toad handled by our presenter, Sarah Hatfi eld. The great turnout shows how much our students like to learn!

The FIRST organization is set up to allow children around the world to have fun and experience solving real-world problems by applying math, science and technology. This program is set up to ignite an enthusiasm for discovery, science and technology in kids.

The program, itself, is set up as a mission-style objective for student to complete. The students not only design, build and program a robot

to complete specifi c tasks, but also complete research to inform a group of judges about the concept of the mission. This year’s mission involved using nano technology, where students learned about atoms and molecules and how they affect our everyday lives. In addition to the academic enrichment that the program bestows, students build self-esteem, confi dence and social skills as they work together as a team.

Doing their part on Earth DayMrs. Beaver’s fi fth-grade class recently cleaned up the school yard for

Earth Day. The students spent 45 minutes of their morning on April 20 picking up litter from around the elementary school building, the foot-ball fi eld and the bleachers. Thank you to the students for taking time to make our world a little cleaner!

Jamestown Community College honored Mrs. Kathleen Klee (pictured below), RCS Mathematics Department Chair, on May 22 as JCC College Connec-tions Teacher of the Year. She received an engraved Danbury clock. Mrs. Klee has been teaching college calculus to RCS students for twelve years and was the fi rst teacher to offer a college course in any local high school. Mrs. Klee also serves as JCC’s liaison for six other teachers of-fering calculus in their schools. Mrs. Klee was truly honored by the award and enjoys the challenge of college calculus as much today as when she started.

Allison Beach, Morgan Fiebelkorn and Isabelle Howell (shown at right) were all busy Saturday, May 26, 2007. These girls gave up their morning to meet Mr. and Mrs. Bob Beach and Mr. Larry Bourne at the East Randolph Cemetery. The girls worked for three hours cleaning and plant-ing fl owers in approximately 20 urns. Mr. Bourne and Mr. Beach would give a brief history of the people who the girls were planting fl owers for. Each urn was select-ed because the family had either moved or died out. It was a beautiful, quiet, peaceful morning, and task was very heartfelt as the girls learned a little history about each individual that they cared for.

Another special thank-you goes to Mr. John Gardner. While working at the cem-etery, Mr. Gardner came to put fl owers in a family urn. He learned of our project and donated money toward next year’s planting!

Saturday morning planting fl owers at the cemetery was a special occasion that will not soon be for-gotten as each one of us received a special

inner peace knowing that we were in some small way doing our part to help others.

In the photo at right, Justin Ernewein hands Elementary Princi-pal Jerry Mottern (representing the school beautifi ca-tion project) a check for $321, while Cody Austin presents a check for the same amount to Tracey Miinte (represent-ing the elementary Parent/Teacher Association).

Once again our thanks go out to the Randolph community, faculty, staff, students and the surrounding communities. Our school received checks total-ing $642. This money represents the money that our school earned during the 2006-2007 school year from the General Mills Box Tops. The funds will be split between the elementary school beautifi cation project and the elementary Parent/Teacher Association.

Thousands of schools like ours are taking advantage of this easy way to earn much needed cash. Please continue to support our school through the Box Tops for Education Program. Since our school started the collection in 2000, our school has earned a total of $5,343. We have already started collecting Box Tops for our 2007-2008 school year and we are proud to announce that a total of $200 has already been reached. Again thank you for your help in supporting the Gail N. Chapman Elementary School.

Mrs. Beaver’s class recently orga-nized and ran the 2nd annual Pennies for Paws penny drive at the Elementary School. Our goal was to raise $600 this year. We exceeded that by raising a total of $747.97! The students wrote an-nouncements, made containers for each classroom, and collected and counted all of the pennies. They decided to organize it as a competition between the classes. Mrs. Freeman’s kindergarten won fi rst place with $104.03, Mr. Halpainy’s 6th grade was second place with $87.07, and third went to Miss Bohall’s 3rd grade with $48.77. Thank you to all the families that donated to this wonderful cause. Because of you, the animals at the Chautauqua County Humane Society will have a better chance of being well taken care of and adopted. Thank you!

Summer school registration for middle school students who have failed any of the core academic subjects will take place in the middle school offi ce on Wednesday, June 27 and Thursday, June 28. Offi ce hours are 8 a.m. to Noon and 1 to 3 p.m. Registrations will not be accepted after 3 p.m. on June 28. Letters will be sent to notify you if your child will need to attend summer school.

Every year the sixth grade does a community project. This year

they gave the Randolph Memorial Garden a makeover.

The last person that took care of the memorial garden was Ed Skudlarek, a fi fth grade teacher who worked at Gail N. Chapman Elementary School for many years. He dedicated much of his personal time to the up keep of the garden. When Mr. Skudlarek worked here Time’s Shadows (the memo-rial garden) was a beautiful, inviting place. Since Mr. Skudlarek’s retire-ment, there has been very little care given to the memorial garden. The weeds were growing, the birdbath was cracked, the trees and bushes needed to be trimmed, and the list goes on and on. The sixth grade thought that it was time for a makeover.

The project started with the sixth grade students all drawing their own ideas of the perfect memorial garden. From all of these drawings, different ideas were combined into one master plan. This plan included building a pergola, benches for under the pergola, making new and more fl ower gardens, mulching for a picnic table area, build-ing a bench under a tree, and replant-ing dead and overgrown bushes.

Kevin McDonald from McDonald Landscaping donated six large bushes to the memorial garden makeover. Another source was the Box Tops for Education. For the past few years, Mrs. Kobinski’s classes have donated some the proceeds from the box tops to the school beautifi cation project. Mrs. Craft and Mr. Mottern allowed the sixth grade use this money to complete the students’ ideas. A dress down day was held at the school with donations going toward the project.

On Saturday, May 19, parents, students, and school faculty completed

the makeover. The sixth grade would like to extend their thanks to Jean Shields and Mrs. Walker’s agricultural classes for their help. A special thank you to McDonald Landscaping, all who donated General Mills Box Tops,

parents, students, staff, and faculty who helped to complete another com-munity project. Time’s Shadows is once again an inviting place that remembers the wonderful people that gave so much to this great community.

Drizzly skies cleared enabling the more than 200 fourth thru sixth graders to celebrate Randolph Central School’s 50th anniversary of their Junior Olympics.

And ... celebrate they did. Through the coordination of Greek studies, these grades decided to have Zeus the lighten-ing bolt lead their parade, followed with a duplicated original Olympic torch, the American fl ag and, of course, the mighty competitors bringing up the rear.

The colorful parade last but a few minutes but enough to get the show on the road, so-to-speak, and to inspire both spectators in the bleachers and the runners to do their thing.

The races included a 50-yard dash, 100 meter dash, 400 meter relay and a 400 meter dash, all given an offi cial start by physical education coach Pat Slater’s starting gun.

It all began with teacher Veronica Kobinski when she returned from her re-cent visit to Greece and with the school’s Junior Olympic committee deciding to make a real production out of an event that began a half century ago.

Leading the grand opening of Randolph Central School’s Jr. Olympic’s parade are sixth grade students Ryan Styles, as Zeus the lighting bolt; Nathan Beaver, with the duplicated Olympic torch; Alison Beach, carrying the American fl ag and of course the mighty athletes.

ATHLETIC

Varsity BaseballThe Varsity Base-

ball team fi nished the season with a 2-12 league re-cord. This is a very young team with no seniors. Three fresh-men, three sopho-mores and three juniors make up the starting nine and the next few seasons look very promising for Randolph base-ball. Chris Erdmann, Matt Hettenbaugh, Tyler Mendell and Jacob Skudlarek were top four hitters with Erdmann and Hettenbaugh both hitting well over the 300 mark. Coach Skud-larek is very excited about returning nine starters for next season and adds that this group of young men have excellent attitudes and are very hard workers.

By Donna MeyerThe spring Leadership Academy class school service project was a two-fold

endeavor. It began with the Leadership students helping the fi fth-graders with their homework assignments, attitude improvement, handing in homework on time and an overall improvement in class.

The motivation for the fi fth-graders to improve was a paid trip to the Erie Zoo. The fi fth-grade teachers kept track of the students’ progress and at the end of the project, 59 fi fth-graders, their teachers, all Academy Leadership students and myself headed to the Erie Zoo on May 16.

In order for the trip to be held, the Leadership Academy class did a hot dog fundraiser in early May. We thank those people who purchased and donated to our cause. Everyone enjoyed the trip.
