TheTOWER FACULTY FOCUS • Dan Jarvis ’76

RETIREES Celebrated

D an Jarvis grew up an athlete. He was a standout basketball player at Waterford

High School and named captain his senior year. He attended FM and impressed both his coaches playing for Jerry Fabiano his freshman year and the legendary Bill Carmody his senior year when Dan was again named captain. He continued his education and played ball at Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts; in his senior year, his team finished sixth in the nation.

Not long after graduating from Springfield, Dan was recruited to play and coach

professional basketball in Sweden which he did for four years. He took two non-winning teams to championships. Dan was doing what he loved—coaching and playing basketball—and getting paid to do it. Also at this time Dan met Jeanette who would become his wife.

After Sweden, Dan moved back home and began to look for a teaching job. He was working at a basketball camp at Siena College when he learned of a position open at FM to coach and teach, exactly what he was looking to do. Without hesitation, Dan became FM’s new men’s head basketball coach and physical education instructor. After nine years and boasting over a 70% winning record, the highest in the school’s history, four Mountain Valley Conference titles, and several coach of the year awards (including the 1990 New York State Coach

of the Year) he added the position of Athletic Director to his title.

After Dan’s initial time as the FM men’s coach, he began volunteering as a coach in the community. He coached several years of Fulton United Soccer and began a fifth and sixth grade YMCA traveling basketball team. With the help of others, Dan began a AAU program for the Gloversville community (The Glove City Bullets) and later spent four years volunteering as an assistant coach at Gloversville High School under well-known coach Don Landrio. While there, Dan had the privilege to coach his son Ryan. He then returned to coaching at FM for one year and helped a team with a 8-18 record improve to 25-6, winning the region and finishing sixth in the country—a true “storybook” season.

Looking back on his career and focusing on where he is now, Dan finds great joy in all that he has done. “I’m proud to be an alum of FM. I’ve spent the majority of my career here, 26 years, and I’ve been able to do everything I love: coach, teach, serve as Athletic Director and advise students on their academics,” “Now I’m happy with just teaching. There were times when my life was non-stop; I was going from early morning classes to late night practices, advising students in-between and then traveling with the team on weekends. When you love what you do, you don’t think twice about it, you just do it and hope you are a success.”

“To me, coaching is about the team more than the individual,” says Dan. “The true joy in coaching is to get the most out of what you have. Each member brings a certain talent to the game. As coach, it’s up to me to find that talent and bring it out and onto the floor, to get every member of the team

pushing in the same direction. I once coached a 5th grade traveling team. In the beginning, the majority of the kids had never played and could not make a layup. I knew you can’t win games if you don’t know the basics. A winning record wasn’t what was important at that time, it was teaching the kids the fundamentals. By the end of the season, each of them had perfected the layup…and they won half their games. That was fun!”

Now that both of Dan’s children are

grown (along with his son Ryan, he and Jeanette have a daughter, Nicole) and he has some free time, you can be sure you’ll find him spending more time on the golf course or on his Harley Ultra Classic. He and Jeanette have ridden as far as the Rockies. You may also find him on the lake, which he can get to by stepping out his back door, perhaps with a fishing pole in hand. He often thinks about basketball and how it brought him to FM; and how it was FM that gave him his life’s direction. ▲

“Dan was doing what he loved— coaching and playing basketball—

and getting paid to do it.”

TheTOWER ALUMNUS FEATURE • Gordon Cantiello ’68

TheTOWER ALUMNUS FEATURE • Mayor Dayton King ’99

W hen Gordon Cantiello attended Amsterdam High, his drama teacher,

Mr. Bert DeRose, played a very important part in guiding and encouraging him to find a place in the field of theatre. This encouragement led him to FM.

“While I was at FM, there were some wonderful professors including Hazel Swart and Eleanor Ferris,” says Gordon. “Professor Swart gave me the necessary steps and

training to go on to a four year institution. She was the most remarkable woman. As a youngster, I didn’t have much self-esteem or much faith that I could do academics. She gave me confidence but mostly she believed in me. It’s rare to get such a fantastic teacher who really gets to know you as a person. I don’t think a larger institution would have provided that for me. I will always think

fondly of FM for bringing Professor Swart into my life.

Professor Ferris was my Art History instruc-tor and she would sponsor a field trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Cloisters a couple times a year. She enticed me to want to learn more. I had tremendous respect for her. Anything that dealt with the arts at FM, I was always there.”

After FM, Gordon pursued a Bachelor of Arts at Ricker College in Maine and continued graduate studies at Schiller International University in Berlin, Germany. He completed a Master’s degree in Educational Administration at San Diego State University.

Today Gordon lives in San Diego, California, and has a second home in Omaha, Nebraska. He is the Theatre Arts Chair at Francis Parker School and Director of Galli-Curci Performing Arts Center. “I’ve been teaching almost all of my life,” says Gordon. “I would say that my goals have been met although I still have aspirations of being in a Broadway show someday.” Gordon has directed countless productions such as Annie,

Cabaret, The Diary of Anne Frank, and You Can’t Take it With You. He has acted in several off-Broadway productions including The Rivals and As You Like It.

Gordon’s love for the theatre is shared as a service to the community. He is an active member of the American Alliance for Theatre Education which allows him to work with children in need. “For the past three summers I have been hired to direct a musical for the Children’s Respite Care Center in Omaha,” says Gordon, “it’s a place where children find a world full of possibilities, and where parents find peace of mind. They help special needs children from birth to age 21 reach their potential. I would love to return to FM sometime and direct a production—then I would have come full circle!” ▲

L ike many seniors in high school, Dayton King thought he needed to move away

from home to have a college experience. He moved 700 miles to attend Greensboro College in North Carolina but after one semester decided that it was not the right choice. He moved back home to Northville and enrolled at FM to pursue a Liberal Arts degree which allowed him to take a variety of courses and explore various career paths. He continued his education at SUNY Oneonta and earned a B.S. in Psychology.

Today Dayton is the Mayor of the City of Gloversville. “My career goal has always been to make a living doing something I enjoy, and being Mayor is an enjoyable experience,” says Dayton. “I have always been interested in being a public servant and thought of this opportunity as the largest public service in the city in which I live.

I was approached by some parents on the Fulton United Soccer Club field who thought I would be good at it. I spoke with my family and gained their support and it was actually my wife, Chanda, who convinced me. I have been very happy serving as Mayor.”

Looking back on whether leaving Greensboro to attend FM was really the right choice, Dayton says, “Absolutely! FM certainly helped prepare me for my position as Mayor. In addition to a public speaking class, I formed many relationships and learned to interact with a diverse population. I also took a few courses with Mrs. Sheryl Seppa, Professor of Early Childhood Education, who was a great role model. She practiced what she preached. She gave her students real life examples of teaching and held us accountable. Politics is all about accountability.”

FM also gave Dayton an opportunity to build confidence before continuing his education at a larger institution. “I was a summer Orientation Leader and Resident Advisor at SUNY Oneonta. This is something I do not believe I would have had the courage to take

on if I hadn’t attended FM first,” says Dayton.

To all college-bound students, Dayton has this advice to give, “Take a tour of FM and never rule out a college just because it is close to where you live. You can save a lot of money and in many cases save your parents’ money. It never hurts to speak to current FM students or those who have graduated from FM and went on to graduate from a four year school. I’ll be the first to tell you that college is completely different from high school and just because it is close to home doesn’t mean you won’t receive a real college experience. The professors are top notch and the campus has so much to offer. Like anything in life, you get out of it what you put into it. To those at FM now, enjoy these days. You will soon look back and struggle with the fact that you graduated ten years ago!” ▲

“I would love to return to FM sometime and direct a production— then I would have come full circle!”

“FM also gave Dayton an opportunity to build confidence before continuing his education at a larger institution.”
