PILKINGTON Ig an extensive township in the parish of Prestwich,' and it contains the villages' or hamlets of Whitefield (6£ miles from Manchester),Stand, Stand Lane, Unsicorth, Hollins, Besses o' th* Barn, Outicood,aa&Ringley. Its population in 1851 was 12,363 ; 1861,12,303; and in 1871, 11,949 souls. The area of the township is 5,469 acres, and its rateable value amounts to £61,702. The most thickly inhabited portion of the township is governed by the Whitefield, Local Board, formed in 1866, and which consists of twelve members, whose offices are in Elms Street.

The knightly family of Pilkington were seated at PilkingtonTower, or Stand, in this township, soon after the conquest. They were not however the chief lords of this manor, for it appears that Roger de Pilkington, in the reign of John, or Henry III., was found to hold the fourth part of a knight's fee, of the fee of Thomas de Gretley, who then held it under the Earl of Ferrers, the King's tenant in chief. In the reign of Edward III., Henry de Lacy had a bovate of land in Pilkington, and the manor of Chadderton, with twelve acres of land in fee. In 35 Edward III., Pilkington is mentioned in

Page 14: RADCLIFFE. 180

the inquisition taken on the death of Henry, Duke of Lancaster, as a fee of the honour of Tuttebury. Stand Hall is now the residence of Thomas Statter, Esq., steward to the Earl of Derby.

All Saints' Church, Stand, occupies a commanding position, and can be seen for several miles round. The foundation stone "was laid by the Earl of Wilton, August 3rd, 1822, and the building was consecrated by Dr. Bloomfield, the then Bishop of Chester, September 8th, 1826. The style of architecture is that of the fourteenth century. The Church contains a nave and side aisles with spacious galleries, and at the west end of the nave is an open arcade, with noble arched entrance, from which a lofty tower rises to the height of 186 feet. The entire cost of the church, exclusive of site, which was presented by the Earl of Derby, was £14,987. It contains 1,860 sittings, of which 960 are free. The benefice is a rectory of the annual value of £300, in the patronage of the Earl of Wilton, and held by the Rev. George Rudd. The population of the parish in 1871 was 5,171. St. George's Church, Unsworth, is a plain edifice erected in 1730, and re-built in 1843. It contains 472 sittings, of which 400 are free. The benefice is a perpetual curacy of the annual value of £200, in the patronage of the rector of Prestwich, and held by the Rev. Benjamin Crompton, M.A. Population of the parish in 1871 1,529. St. John the Evangelist's Church, Stand Lane, is mentioned in the account of Radcliffe. St. Saviour's Church, Ringley, was erected in-1626. It was re-built in 1854, from a design by Mr. E. G. Paley, at a cost of £2,500. It contains 560 sittings all of which are free. The benefice is a perpetual curacy of the annual value of £250, in the patronage of the rectors of Prestwich, Bury, and Middleton, and held by the Rev. James Potter, B.A. The Unitarian Church, Stand, is a prettily situated building and dates from 1695. It was renovated in 1818. Rev. W. C. Squier, minister. Here is a Grammar School founded in 1688. Rev. W. C. Squier is head master. The Wesleyan Methodists have a neat chapel at Unsworth, and a preaching room in Radcliffe New Road. The Primitive Methodist Chapel is situate at Chapelfield, and here is also an Independent Chapel. Rev. Alexander Anderson, B.A., pastor. The Independents have another Chapel at Besses o' th' Barn. Rev. H. H. Richardson, pastor. The yew Jerusalem Church is also situated at Besses o' th' Barn. Rev. Isaiah Tinsley, pastor. There are several elementary schools in the district; and that in connection with All Saints' Church is situate in Elms Street, and was erected in 1874. The Conservative Club is also situate in Elms Street. At liollins is a well patronised Institute.

Whitefield is now connected with Manchester and other important places through the formation of the line of railway through the district, and which was opened for traffic September 1st, 1879. The district is lighted with gas by the Radcliffe and Pilkington Gas Company, and supplied with water from the Bury Waterworks. The acreage of the Local Board district is 2,025 acres, and the population is about 9,000

BEYWOOD, 209

HEYWOOD. THIS town is partly in the township of Heap, and partly in that

of Hopwood, and is in the parish of Bury, Hundred of Salford, and diocese of Manchester. Heywood is known as the birthplace of that zealous Lancashire magistrate, Peter Heywood, mentioned by Lord Clarendon in his history, whose fortune it was to contribute to the discovery of the conspirators implicated in the gunpowder plot. The cotton trade is carried on very extensively in the town, and here are also woollen mills, iron foundries, and machine works, railway waggon building works, and various other trades and professions. The town is situate on the banks of the river Roach, and is distant 3 miles from Bury, 3 from Rochdale, 9£ from Manchester, and 38 from Liverpool. The Lancashire and Yorkshire line of railway has a station here, and affords every facility for the rapid conveyance of passengers, merchandise, and minerals to and from the town. A branch of the Rochdale Canal enters the town, close to Manchester Road. The township of Heap, the principal portion of which is in the town of Heywood, contains 2,938 acres, and its rateable value amounts to £72,676. The population in 1851, was 16,048; 1861, 17,353; and in 1871, 17,352. The population of the town at the present time, amounts to over 25,000 souls. About 70 years ago, when Sir Robert Peel, grandfather of the present baronet, began the manufacturing business at Makeant Mill, the population of the place principally consisted of onlv* a few hundred handloom weavers,' and a few employed in agricultural pursuits ; so that it is only of late years Heywood has grown from a straggling village into a town of considerable importance.

The Church dedicated to St. Luke is a noble structure, in the style of architecture which prevailed in the time of Edward III. It occupies a central position in the town, and is on the site of an older building dating from 1577. The present edifice was erected in 1860-2, at a cost of nearly £10,000, the design being furnished by Mr. J. Clarke. This amount was raised by public subscription ; the scholars attached to the Church contributing the handsome sum of £500. The Church contains 1,080 sittings, of which 530 are free. The benefice is a rectory of the annual value of £400, in the patronage of the rector of Bury, and held by the Rev. John Spittal, M.A. The population of the parish in 1871, was 9,270. St. James's Chwch, Tower Street, is a substantial stone edifice, erected in 1838, at a cost of £4,200, defrayed partly by subscriptions and partly by a grant from the Diocesan Society. It contains 1,250 sittings of which 500 are free. The benefice is a perpetual curacy of the annual value of £300,

in the patronage of the Bishop of Manchester, and held by the Rev. Edward James Russell, M.A. Population of the parish in 1871, 7,611. Service is also held in the following School Chapels: St. Michael's, Bamford, contains 200 sittings, Rev. John Compton Butterworth, B.A., curate in charge ; St. John's, Hopwood, is under the pastoral care of the Rev. Francis Edwin Waldie, curate in charge. Gooden School is attended by the clergy of St. Luke's ; and HeadyHill School and Heap Bridge School are attended by the clergy of St. James'. St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Dawson Street, was opened in 1856. The Catholic population is 2,486. Rev. Arthur S. McCann, pastor. The Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, Market Street, was built in 1805, and enlarged in 1828. This body have also a Chapel at Hopwood, and another at Bamford. The Independent Chapel, York Street, is a neat brick edifice with stone dressings. Rev. William Henry Fothergill, minister ; and the Independent Chapel, Bamford, is under the ministry of the Rev. W. Mclntosh Arthur. The Methodist Free Church have Chapels in Bethel Street, Bury New Road, and Hopwood. The Baptist Ch a/>cl, Rochdale Road, is a neat building ; Rev. George Hitchon, minister. The Baptists have also Chapels in Starkey Street and Aspinall Street. The Primitive M<thodist Chapel, Bridge Street, was built in 1871 ; another Chapel belonging this body is situate in Miller Street. The New Jerusalem Church stands in Church Street; Rev. Richard Storry, pastor. The Unitarian Chapel, Britain Hill, is under the pastoral care of the Rev. William Bennett.

The Queen's Park, presented by Her Majesty, as Duchess of Lancaster, to the town of Heywood, is pleasantly situated a short distance from William Street. It was opened to the public, August 2nd, 1879, by Colonel Taylor, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. On the death of Mr. Charles Martin Newhouse, he dying intestate, his estates, amounting to over £14,000, fell to the Crown. But Her Majesty, not wishing to retain the money, was graciously pleased to accede to the wishes of the inhabitants, that it should be expended for the purpose of providing a public park ; and this has now been done, with the exception of various sums given to relations of the late Mr. Newhouse. The site, which covers about twenty acres, was purchased from Messrs. Langton and Hornby, for £4,500. It is situate upon a beautiful tract of hill copse and woodland pasture, which rises above the river Roach, about half a mile from the centre of the town. All the various works have been carried out under the direction of Mr. G. R. Cartwright, of the office of the Surveyor General of the Duchy of Lancaster ; and the stonework has been executed by Messrs. Diggle Brothers of Heywood. The Cemetery occupies a beautiful situation, about two miles from the town, on the Rochdale Road. The site, which covers an area of twenty acres, is elevated, and one of the most eligible that could have been selected. It was opened for interment in 1856, and there are three mortuary chapels, and registrars' house, &c. The Local Board consists of 18 members, and the offices of the

Board are in York Street; Mr. John Banks, clerk. The Gas Works are situate at Hooley Bridge, and are owned by the Local Board. They consist of four holders, with an aggregate capacity of about 278,000 cubic feet of gas, which is sold to consumers at 5s. per 1,000 feet. The number of public lamps is 650; Mr. Edwin Buckley, manager. The Water Works are also under the control of the Local Board, they being purchased from the Heywood Waterworks Company, in 1877. The town is copiously supplied with water of an excellent quality. The offices are in Miller Street, and Mr. James Diggle is manager. There are two newspapers published in the town, the Heywood Advertiser, established in 1855, and the Heywood Standard, more recently established. Both are published on Friday. The following are the principal institutions and public offices, &c., in the town: The Working Men's Club, in Church Street; the Reform Club, in Longford Street, with library, news room, &c.; the Conservative Club in York Street, which has a lecture room capable of holding 600 persons, library, news, and other rooms ; the Church Association, the Ladies' Charity, and the Bible Society. The Drill Hall for the 8th Lancashire Bifle Volunteers is in Longford Street; Captain F. Moore, adjutant. Petty Sessions are held every alternate Wednesday, at the Sessions House, Longford Street. The local magistrates are Charles Cheetham, B. Wood, William Hartley, and D. Smith, Esqs. ; Messrs. T. A. & J. Grundy & Co., clerks to magistrates. The Union Bank of Manchester, and the Manchester and Liverpool District Bank have each a branch in the town. Fairs are held on the first Friday in April, first Friday before the first Sunday in August, and the first Friday after the first of October.

HOPWOOD Is a township in the parish of Middleton, but the most populous is included in the Local Board district of Heywood. The Hopwood family have been seated here for many centuries. In 1359, Adam de Hopwood was one of the inquisition at Preston, before Thomas de Seton and others, justices of Henry, the first Duke of Lancaster, in the dispute between him and Roger de la Warre. On the death of Dr. Hopwood, in the early part of the eighteenth century, by which event the local family became extinct, the Hopwood estate passed by will to Joseph Gregge, Esq., an ancestor of the present proprietor, Edward John Gregge Hopwood, Esq. The township contains 2,115 acres, and its rateable value is £28,164. The population in 1851 was 1,575 ; 1861, 2,281; and in 1871, 3,655 souls.
