AQUATIC POLICIESLIFEGUARDS AND ADULT SUPERVISION Our aquatic staff of certified lifeguards strive to maintain the highest standards possible. The goal is to provide members with a safe, clean atmosphere in which families can enjoy aquatic fitness and recreation. The purpose of the lifeguards is not to supervise children, but to ensure the safety of all by preventing and responding to emergencies. Therefore, parents are expected to closely supervise their children and assist in enforcing the pool rules.

1. A parent or guardian must directly supervise children 7 & under at all times unless your child is a participant in a Y supervised program.

2. All children considered to be non-swimmers must be accompanied in the water by a parent/guardian 18 years or older. Adults are requested to stay within arms distance at all times (No more than four children can accompany one adult).

3. All youth ages 8 through 11 years old must have a parent/guardian 18 years or older in the building at all times.

4. Individuals under 16 who want to swim in deep water must demonstrate swimming ability by completing the following deep-water test:

Jump in feet first in the deep end of pool and level off; Swim approximately 40 feet using a front paddling stroke; tread for a minimum of 15 seconds; float on back for 15 seconds and return to starting point by swimming 40 ft. back to the starting wall.

PROPER SWIMSUIT ATTIRE IS REQUIRED In the interest of public health and safety, and in compliance with all local and state laws, only appropriate clean swimwear may be worn. Appropriate swimsuit attire is defined as clothing specifically designed for use in the water. They are designed to be quick drying and are generally made from smooth, nylon material. Examples of appropriate swimwear include: swimsuits with a lining, shirts, board shorts, and swim trunks with an affixed/sewn inner lining.

Please help us keep our water clean! The Racine Family Y prides itself in maintaining an exceptionally high standard of water quality. Help us with this by wearing appropriate, clean swimwear and by showering prior to pool entry. Inappropriate attire can damage our pumps and off-set our chemical levels.

FLOTATION DEVICES AND TOYSAt this time, flotation devices and pool toys are welcome at our aquatic facilities under the following guidelines:

• Any person using a flotation device must have a parent or adult accompanying them in the water within arms reach

• Any flotation device or pool toy must be clean and free of any debris (i.e. sand & beach water residue)

• Flotation devices and/or pool toys will be allowed at the lifeguard’s discretion

• Water wings are strongly discouraged for use as flotation devices

• The YMCA recommends only US Coast Guard approved flotation devices

AQUATICS FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONSWHAT DOES MY CHILD NEED TO BRING WITH TO LESSON?

Proper swimwear is required for all patrons of our facility. Children who are not toilet trained must wear a swim diaper or cloth diaper with plastic pants. Regular disposable diapers are not allowed. Tie-backs for children with long hair will help them swim without the distraction of hair in the face.

WHY IS MY CHILD ASKED TO SHOWER BEFORE ENTERING THE POOL?

State regulations require showering before entering a pool. This policy is in place for the health and safety of all people who use our pools each day.

CAN I WATCH MY CHILD’S LESSON? Parents are invited to stay and watch their child’s lesson. All parents are asked to observe from the benches.

WHY DO CHILDREN UNDER 7 HAVE TO HAVE AN ADULT IN THE WATER?

It is a safety precaution. Parents need to be around to help the lifeguards with behavior problems so that the guards can focus on safety and all families can have fun.

WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP MY CHILD PROGRESS AT A FASTER RATE IN LESSONS?

A child will not move to the next level until he/she has successfully demonstrated the skills required in their current level. Please remember that even though your child may not have advanced to the next level, instructors will individualize within each class, keeping all children challenged. What can you do as a parent? Don’t compare children; each child will progress at a pace that’s right for them. Always be understanding and encouraging. Parents are encouraged to bring their children to the pool to practice between classes. Your children can also practice their skills at home, blowing bubbles during bath time or using “big arms” while watching television. Ask their instructor for additional skills they can work on at home.

IS THERE CHILDCARE FOR GENERAL PUBLIC DURING LESSONS?Yes! Child Watch/Prime Time is available for children ages 6 weeks and up. Members receive Child Watch/Prime Time free of charge. General public fees are: $5/hr. Reservations are not accepted. Children are served on a first-come, first-served basis. There are limits to the number of children that can be served at any time. There is a 3 hour time limit.

WHAT IF MY CHILD MISSES A CLASS? Refunds and/or make-up classes will not be offered for missed class. The Racine Family YMCA offers refunds and or credits upon request for medical reasons only. Upon supplying medical documentation, a pro-rated system will be used and a $5 processing fee will be deducted from the amount of the refund/credit.

The next step in your child’s swim career. Swimmers refine their, strokes learn how to compete and learn how to be a team player. SEAY is also dedicated to teaching kids good sportsmanship and fair competition.

Each instructional program is focused on giving children an equal opportunity. As the program progresses from week to week, the instructors will be spending less time on instructional drills and more time on game strategy through simulated games. During its 35 year history, the Lighthouse Run, presented by The Journal Times and the RACINE FAMILY Y, has evolved into one of the premier road run/walks in the state of Wisconsin.

Offering both competitive and non-competitive events, Lighthouse Run serves as the official kick-off to summer fitness awareness.

Proceeds from your participation in the Lighthouse Run allows the RACINE FAMILY Y to provide program support and financial assistance to youth and families who need it in our community. Only by working together can we give more kids the opportunity to grow strong in spirit, mind and body.

2014 LIGHTHOUSE RUN TRAIN FOR A FAMILY 5K RUN/WALK TOGETHER!Train for a Family 5k run/walk together! Are you looking for something active to do together? Something fun, relatively cheap, and that includes everyone.

Why a 5k distance? Five kilometers (or 3.1 miles) is a great starting distance nearly anyone can train to accomplish. The distance is far enough to gain benefits of endurance training and short enough for young family members to participate. (I recommend at least 7-8 years and older for most families. Younger kids can ride in a jogging stroller).
