Message from Jeff CollenYMCA President/ CEO

Thanks for being a part of the Racine Family YMCA. We are very appreciative of how you’ve embraced the organization and the many opportunities it provides to the community. The Y is a non-profit community service organization focused on youth development, healthy living and social re-sponsibility. One of the things we promise is that everyone, regardless of their ability to pay will have the opportunity to participate in Y programs. Last year’s annual support campaign allowed us to provide membership and program scholarships to nearly 10,000 local youth and families. This year, we hope to make a difference in the lives of even more people.

We hope you’ll take a minute to read more about our campaign on page 23, and watch our new campaign video on our website at www.ymcaracine.org and please, consider joining others in the community who each year contribute to our Strong Kids/Strong Communities fund-raising effort to make sure that everyone can have the same Y experiences that you’re having. Below you’ll see how donations truly help.

$50 will provide a grandmother raising her grandchild with one week of after school care. $150 will provide a child with new skills and confidence from one week of summer day camp or a father with the skills and desire to be more involved in his children’s lives.

$250 will provide a youth with a year’s membership or a cancer survivor with a rehabilitative fitness program.

$500 will provide a youth with a six week program that’s been proven to reduce summer learning loss.

$1000 will provide five youth with mentoring help so that they can develop skills they need to be successful in school.

$1500 will provide ten youth with leadership training through our Young Achievers program.

Once again let me thank you for being a part of the Racine Family YMCA and for understanding that the Y is so much more than just gym and swim. We so much appreciate how you’ve embraced the Y and its mission and values.

AQUATIC POLICIESLIFEGUARDS AND ADULT SUPERVISION Our aquatic staff of certified lifeguards strive to maintain the highest standards possible. The goal is to provide members with a safe, clean atmosphere in which families can enjoy aquatic fitness and recreation. The purpose of the lifeguards is not to supervise children, but to ensure the safety of all by preventing and responding to emergencies. Therefore, parents are expected to closely supervise their children and assist in enforcing the pool rules.

1. A parent or guardian must directly supervise children 7 & under at all times in the water unless your child is a participant in a Y supervised program.

2. All children considered to be non-swimmers must be accompanied in the water by a parent/guardian 18 years or older. Adults are requested to stay within arms distance at all times (No more than four children can accompany one adult).

3. All youth ages 8 through 11 years old must have a parent/guardian 18 years or older in the building at all times.

4. Individuals under 16 who want to swim in deep water must demonstrate swimming ability by completing the following deep-water test:

Jump in feet first in the deep end of pool and level off; Swim approximately 40 feet using a front paddling stroke; tread for a minimum of 15 seconds; float on back for 15 seconds and return to starting point by swimming 40 ft. back to the starting wall.

PROPER SWIMSUIT ATTIRE IS REQUIRED In the interest of public health and safety, and in compliance with all local and state laws, only appropriate clean swimwear may be worn. Appropriate swimsuit attire is defined as clothing specifically designed for use in the water. They are designed to be quick drying and are generally made from smooth, nylon material. Examples of appropriate swimwear include: swimsuits with a lining, shirts, board shorts, and swim trunks with an affixed/sewn inner lining.

Please help us keep our water clean! The Racine Family Y prides itself in maintaining an exceptionally high standard of water quality. Help us with this by wearing appropriate, clean swimwear and by showering prior to pool entry. Inappropriate attire can damage our pumps and off-set our chemical levels.

FLOTATION DEVICES AND TOYSAt this time, flotation devices and pool toys are welcome at our aquatic facilities under the following guidelines:

• Any person using a flotation device must have a parent or adult accompanying them in the water within arms reach.

• Any flotation device or pool toy must be clean and free of any debris (i.e. sand & beach water residue).

• Flotation devices and/or pool toys will be allowed at the lifeguard’s discretion.

• Water wings are strongly discouraged for use as flotation devices.

• The YMCA recommends only US Coast Guard approved flotation devices.

YMCA AGE GUIDELINES In order to provide a safe and positive experience for the youth of our community, the following guidelines related to facility use by YMCA members and guests will apply. ”Supervising individuals” are defined as persons 18 years or older.

Youth ages 7 and under are required to be directly supervised at all times by a parent/guardian. Child Watch is available to all members free of charge for children 6 weeks to 4 years old. Prime Time is available to all members free of charge for children 5 years old and up.

AQUATICS FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONSWHAT DOES MY CHILD NEED TO BRING WITH TO LESSON?

Proper swimwear is required for all patrons of our facility. Children who are not toilet trained must wear a swim diaper or cloth diaper with plastic pants. Regular disposable diapers are not allowed. Tie-backs for children with long hair will help them swim without the distraction of hair in the face.

WHY IS MY CHILD ASKED TO SHOWER BEFORE ENTERING THE POOL?

State regulations require showering before entering a pool. This policy is in place for the health and safety of all people who use our pools each day.

CAN I WATCH MY CHILD’S LESSON? Parents are invited to stay and watch their child’s lesson. All parents are asked to observe from the benches.

WHY DO CHILDREN 7 AND UNDER HAVE TO HAVE AN ADULT IN THE WATER?

It is a safety precaution. Parents need to be around to help the lifeguards with behavior problems so that the guards can focus on safety and all families can have fun.

WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP MY CHILD PROGRESS AT A FASTER RATE IN LESSONS?

A child will not move to the next level until he/she has successfully demonstrated the skills required in their current level. Please remember that even though your child may not have advanced to the next level, instructors will individualize within each class, keeping all children challenged. What can you do as a parent? Don’t compare children; each child will progress at a pace that’s right for them. Always be understanding and encouraging. Parents are encouraged to bring their children to the pool to practice between classes. Your children can also practice their skills at home, blowing bubbles during bath time or using “big arms” while watching television. Ask their instructor for additional skills they can work on at home.

IS THERE CHILDCARE FOR GENERAL PUBLIC DURING LESSONS?Yes! Child Watch/Prime Time is available for children ages 6 weeks and up. Members receive Child Watch/Prime Time free of charge. General public fees are: $5/hr. Reservations are not accepted. Children are served on a first-come, first-served basis. There are limits to the number of children that can be served at any time. There is a 3 hour time limit.

WHAT IF MY CHILD MISSES A CLASS? Refunds and/or make-up classes will not be offered for missed class. The RACINE FAMILY Y offers refunds and/or credits upon request for medical reasons only. Upon supplying medical documentation, a pro-rated system will be used and a $5 processing fee will be deducted from the amount of the refund/credit.

The next step in your child’s swim career. Swimmers refine their strokes, learn how to compete and learn how to be a team player. SEAY is also dedicated to teaching kids good sportsmanship and fair competition. TRYOUTS Monday, September 15 - 6:00pm Park H.S. Monday, October 27 - 6:00pm Park H.S. THEIR POTENTIALMore than ever before, Y activities and programs provide a range of practices dedicated to increasing the strength and effectiveness of community life and improving local conditions, especially for youth in disadvantaged situations. Our Young Leaders Academy is a program that develops potential in our youth.

“This program along with Mr. Taylor’s discipline has helped improve my son’s ability to better plan his time, complete his assignments and also get that “boy time” so desperately needed. Robert learns the essence of fair play and that you have to work hard to achieve within even a group setting. I am glad that I enrolled him in the YLA program here at 21st Century Preparatory School.” - Freda Barkley - YLA Parent

THEIR HEALTHImproving our community’s health and well-being is a priority at our Y. We offer guidance and resources to everyone from children to seniors, helping them maintain or improve their physical activity, health and wellness. And our community has benefited from our efforts. We also provide services forthose who are struggling health-wise with programs like our Parkinson’s Fitness Class and LIVESTRONG®, a 12-week small-group program designed for adult cancer survivors. All these are tools that can be used to help build a stronger community.

“It’s much more than fitness, it’s about bonding with fellow survivors.” - Amy Czerniec

“It is exciting to share this journey to good health with co-survivors.” - Angie Morales-Heijl

THEIR FUTUREWe continue to help develop the future of our community through programs like Young Achievers, Teen Achievers, the Nurturing Fathers Program and PREP (Personal Responsibility Education Program). The Y has always listened and responded to our community’s most critical needs. With the development of the nationally recognized Focus on Fathers Initiative, the Y is providing fathers with programs and activities that help strengthen the future of their children. “Helped me and taught me ways to be a better father. It’s a real good program. You get a lot of advice from older fathers that have been through a lot.” - Jose “Taught me a lot. Showed me a lot of things to be a better father. Being a father is very important.” - Rufus

ANNUAL SUPPORT CAMPAIGN - YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE! Financial assistance keeps the Y available for kids and families who need us most and is offered to individuals and families who cannot afford memberships or programs. We raise funds through our Annual Support Campaign to ensure the Y is accessible to all people. This year 1 in 4 people who walk through our doors will receive financial assistance for part of their membership and/or program cost. We count on the generosity of our members and community to help people of all ages and from all walks of life be more healthy, confident, connected and secure.
