Reb Zushya’s menorah - Chanuka
R eb Moshe Leib Sassover was a student of Reb Shmelke of Nickolsburg,
who in turn was a student of the great Maggid of Mezritch. Once he was
traveling with some of his students and passed through the town of Brod. A wom-
an came to ask for a blessing for her sick daughter that the doctors had given up
all hope of recovery. Reb Moshe Leib looked at the poor woman and said: “Can I
have your silver menorah?” The woman was shocked. How did Reb Moshe Leib
know that she had a silver menora? It had been passed down in her family from
her grandfather! How could she give it away? She hesitated but decided to give it
to the Rebbe. Quickly, the woman went and brought back the menora for Reb
Moshe Leib. By the time the woman returned home, her daughter was beginning
to feel better. It was Chanuka. Reb Moshe Leib turned to the Chasidim and asked
"Is Reb Yechiel Tzoreif here? Reb Yechiel, come and stand next to me." After Reb
Moshe Leib lit the menora, he said: "Your grandfather was a very poor man. When
it came time for him to marry off his daughter, he could not pay for all the ex-
penses. He had no choice except to try to borrow money for the wedding. One
day he heard about a very rich man who gave money specifically for poor people
to marry off their children. When he heard that he was Reb Yechiel Tzoreif, the
silver smith, he said: “Don't you own a silver menora which you made from coins
that you had from the great tzadik Reb Zusia of Annipoli?” 'If you will give me that
menora, I will pay for your daughter's wedding.' Reluctantly Reb Yechiel gave him
the menora, in order to pay for his daughter's wedding. Some years later, the rich
man passed away. When his soul went before the Heavenly Court, many angels
that had been created by his charitable acts came to testify on his behalf. There
was only one problem. He had taken the menora away from Reb Yechiel. "This is
the menorah that belongs to your family. It was made by your grandfather. Re-
cently the granddaughter of the rich man gave it to me. He deserves his reward in
Heaven.” Good Shabbos,
Rabbi Cohen

HALACHIC CORNER
On Erev Shabbos Chanukah, minchah should be davened before lighting Chanu-
kah candles. There are two reasons for davening Minchah first:
1) The afternoon Tamid sacrifice, which corresponds to our Mincha service, was
always brought before the lighting of the Menorah in the Beis ha-Mikdash
2) Davening Mincha after lighting Chanukah candles appears contradictory,
since Mincha "belongs" to Friday, while the Chanukah candles "belong" to
Shabbos. But if no early minyan is available, then it is better to light first and
daven with a minyan afterwards
