Market SquareVictoria Square

Te Pae Christchurch stands on the site of an historically significant market – a gathering place that has seen inhabitants and visitors to our region meet, connect and share for centuries.

Victoria Square is a place of special significance for Ngāi Tūāhuriri, from Kaiapoi, who came here to sell their produce at the markets held on the banks of the Ōtākaro Avon River. Between 1000 and 1500AD, the area was the site of Puari, a Waitaha pā which stretched along the banks of the Ōtākaro Avon river, close to Victoria Square. This stretch of river has also long been an important mahinga kai (natural resources) site for Ngāi Tahu.

As Christchurch was becoming established during early European settlement, the area around Market Square – later renamed Victoria Square – became the commercial heart of the city. The site of market days, fairs and trade, the first post office in the growing settlement, a police station and jail, barracks, a market hall and general store were all established around the square.

From 1878, Cathedral Square became the heart of the city when the markets moved there from Victoria Square.
