    COMPREHENSION

DIRECTIONS: Read the passage carefully. Then read each question and circle the letter next to the correct answer.

    Hanging Out the Wash

1 Monday was wash day in Luiss house. He was helping his grandmother.

He was waiting for the washing machine to stop. All at once, it was silent.

    The wash was done.

2 Ill put the wash in the dryer, he said.

3 That would help, said Abuelita.

4 Luis took the wet things out of the washer. He started to put them in the

dryer. But something stopped him. It was the sheet from his bed.

5 Dont put me in there! Please dont! it cried.

6 Luis was amazed. He called Abuelita. She came running.

7 The wash is talking, he told her. Listen!

8 What? said Abuelita. Youre hearing things.

9 Then she stopped. She rubbed her ears. Luis was right!

10 Dont put us in there! cried a shirt. Its hot and noisy.

11 Its crowded too! added another shirt.

12 I get sick going around and around, sobbed a sock. Then I cant

    walk straight.

15 Abuelita looked at Luis. Luis looked at Abuelita.

16 Luis, its been years since I hung the wash out to dry. Maybe its time to

do that again, she said. The weather is just right.

17 Abuelita went into the garage. She came back with a rope. She tied one end

of the rope to a tree. Luis tied the other end to the fence.

18 First they hung his sheet on the line.

19 Look at me! sang the sheet. I look like the sail on a boat!

20 Next Luis hung up a shirt.

21 Oh, said the shirt. Its so cool here. Its so quiet. Its just the way I knew

    it would be.

22 Now came the socks. Luis made sure he hung them right next to each other.

23 Look! called the first sock. I can wiggle my toes!

24 Ha ha! laughed its twin. I can tickle your foot!

25 And we can see each other, both socks said at the same time.

26 The second sheet breathed in the fresh air. It turned its face to the sun. It

    was so happy, it hummed.

27 Luis and Abuelita looked at the wash. It was swinging in the breeze. Luis

liked how bright the colors looked.

28 They waited for the sun to set. It was time to take the laundry off the line.

Abuelita buried her face in the sheets. Luis, she said. Put the sheets up to

your face. What do you smell?

29 Luis smelled the sheets. Why, they smell like sunshine, Abuelita! They

really do! he said. Can we hang the wash outside all the time?

30 Abuelita thought for a moment. Why not? she said. We have already

put up a line. We always have lots of sunshine. And I like to watch the clothes

    dance with the wind.

31 What about the dryer? Luis asked.

32 Oh, well save that for a rainy day, she said, if the wash will let us.

    Passage #1

Bens fuzzy new kitten was lost. Ben looked

everywhere for her. He looked all over the house. He

looked under every bed. He even looked in his toy box.

His kitten was nowhere to be found.

Bens mother said, Dont worry. Im sure she has

found a warm place for a nap.

But Ben was worried. It was a cold, snowy day. What

if his kitten had gone outside? So Ben went outside. He

called for her in the snow. There was no answer.

When Ben got home, his feet felt like ice. He went to

put on his fuzzy slippers. Thats when he saw a fuzzy tail.

His kitten had found a warm place for a nap. She was

    inside his slipper.

    Passage #2

It is dark and cool. Rocks are all around you.

Everything is wet. Where are you? You are in a cave!

Caves can be deep under the ground. They can be in the

side of a hill. Some caves are even under water!

Many people like to visit caves. What can you see in a

cave? Special rocks hang down from the roofs of caves.

Other rocks look like towers pushing up from the floor.

You might see animals that call the cave home. A bat

    might fly over your head!

Going into a cave can be fun. But you must take care.

You must always be safe. Do not go into any cave alone.

A grown-up who knows the cave must go with you. Some

parks have caves. A park worker can take you through the

    cave.

Are there any caves near you? Maybe you can go to

    one soon.
