Stewardship Prayer Corner The gifts of God that the angel brought to Elijah—food, water, rest,
and encouragement—were given, not for his own good alone, but to
strengthen him for service. How am I using my gifts to serve others?

StJoeLeb Has A New Look We are excited to announce our newly designed website at
www.stjoeleb.org. Our website has a fresh new look. There are several
dropdown menus with information and ministry descriptions. One goal
was to build a user friendly and simple navigation site for users to
quickly find content. We hope you will enjoy browsing the new website
and find more options and information each time. Comments and
suggestion may be submitted through the “Contact Us” link and are
greatly appreciated.
Imagine a high school graduating class. The students have worked together during the last four years, doing their best, studying hard, and encouraging one another. Throughout their senior year, they look forward eagerly to graduation day. Then imagine school officials telling them in their final week that everyone has passed, and there is no need for a graduation ceremony. There will be no diplomas, no caps and gowns, no pictures, and no Pomp and Circumstance. The reaction would be uproar. Students and patrons would be angry, because there is a need to ritualize graduation. People need ritual for most of life’s important events. Reconciliation ritualizes forgiveness. It celebrates the liberation that Christ Jesus won for all on the cross. It is also the way for individuals to experience God’s mercy. Celebrating this ritual well takes effort and preparation. Reconciliation is a liturgical action, with prayers from a priest presider, dialogue and responses from the penitent, and a formula Trinitarian prayer. The penitent neither is passive nor simply recep-tive. The individual is required to actively give an account of re-morseful actions. This can be the most difficult part of the ritual. By voicing sins, the penitent takes ownership of unloving, unjust, and sinful ways. In most other situations, admitting fault results in pun-ishment. In the sacrament of Reconciliation, admitting fault is the doorway to God’s transformative grace. A fruitful reconciliation first entails a good examination of conscience. This is perhaps where most of the penitent’s work should be done. Many struggle because of an unfamiliarity with sin. It is easy to grow comfortable with sin. Spend time with a good examination, or compile your own from a collection of others. Penance should not be confused with punishment. Rather, it serves as the strengthening force to a deeper communion with Christ. It fosters a virtue that helps stave off destructive behaviors. Knowing what you want and what the sacrament offers can minimize disappointment. The sacrament of Reconciliation is not intended to be spiritual direction or counseling. Either of these in conjunction with reconciliation can be very life-giving. The sacrament itself is a ritual liturgical action. It brings to life the biblical realities of healing and forgiveness. Reconciliation restores the soul broken by sin, and renews us as the forgiven, redeemed children of God. Questions for Reflection • Describe the best sacramental reconciliation experience. • What social sins affect you today? Home Activities Create an examination of conscience from a variety of resources for all to consider. Practice examining your conscience nightly. Take time to evaluate the day, calling to mind the regrets and unloving actions, as well as the joys and grateful moments. Darren M. Henson, stl, is pastor of Sacred Heart Church, Emporia, Kansas. He serves as adjunct faculty at Loyola University Chicago and Benedictine College, Atchison, Kansas, teaching liturgy and sacra-ments.

Outreach

Pro-Life Corner Please pray the following prayer every day for
an end to abortion and for the unborn
babies…“Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you very
much. I beg you to spare the life of the unborn
baby that I have spiritually adopted who is in
danger of abortion.” -Prayer of the late Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen Pro-Life Notes
Ever Wonder Why…? Why is it…one never sees the word
“abortion” on the buildings or signs at abortion clinics? If abortion
is such a good “choice”, why hide what it is they really do?
Post-Abortion Healing & Reconciliation
Project Rachael, a post-abortion healing ministry, offers
confidential and skilled help. Call 1-877-522-3300.
Did You Know?
There are several people who go each Friday to abortion clinics
to pray? If you would like to be a part of this ministry, please call
the Parish Office.

“Come and See” Inquiry into the Catholic Faith What does it mean to be a disciple of Jesus Christ? How does the
Catholic Church help people to follow Jesus in everyday life? Are you
or someone you know thinking about joining our faith community…or
would you just like to ask some questions? Then you are invited to
“come and see” inquiry into the Catholic faith, which is held in the St.
Aloysius room on Monday evenings at 7:00 pm. Enter through the
door just east of the canopied office entrance on the south side of the
parish hall building. For more information, you may call the Parish
Office (765-482-5558).
High School Youth Ministers, Catechists, and Teachers This is an invitation to all who minister to high school students in
the parish or public setting to meet with Bishop Timothy Doherty to
discuss the challenges they face today and his vision for our young
church. We will be gathering on August 20, 2015 at 7:00 pm at St.
Maria Goretti Parish Hall (17102 Spring Mill Road, Westfield, IN
46074). If you have questions, contact the Pastoral Office for Catech-
esis, 765-269-4652. Details can also be found on the website –
www.pocatechesis.org/youth-ministry.
Religious Education You may register online for Religious Education for the 2015/16 year through the parish website. Classes will begin September 13,
2015. For more information or questions, please email Caroline at
[email protected]. Please use the colored Religious Education
envelopes for your payments.
Family Invitation Michael James Mette will be sharing his music with our community
on Sunday, August 16 at 6:00 pm. Michael is a Catholic musician and
speaker who travels the country with his wife of 15 years, Michelle,
and their six young children, infant through 11 years of age. His music
is a modern reflection of his faith blending alternative rock with faith
based lyrics. Your whole family is invited to this free-will concert to be
held in the parish hall. Please mark your calendar to join LIFE TEEN
and support Michael’s ministry.
In three more months Indianapolis will be filled
with Catholic young people and their chaper-
ones. We are planning an Italian dinner and
kids festival on Saturday, August 29 to benefit
NCYC. A 50/50 raffle tickets will be sold after Masses from now until
the drawing at the end of the dinner. You do not need to be present to
win. Get you tickets now for a chance to be the big winner. Thank you
to all who are supporting the pilgrims planning to attend NCYC.
St. Vincent de Paul Food Distribution It is hard to believe, but school will be starting soon. Parents re-
ceive a list of supplies students must have for class. The list is long
and the items become expensive. Some parents cannot afford to
purchase all of the supplies on the list. So, during the month of Au-
gust, St. Vincent de Paul will be having a drive in the parish to help
these parents with the supplies. Bring items such as pencils, pens,
notebooks, 3-ring binders, paper, crayons, glue sticks, boxes of facial
tissue, and any other items on your children’s list to the box in the
gathering space before Sunday Mass.
Grief Support A new Grief Support Group is forming. This group is for those who
are mourning the loss of a loved one due to death. Companioning
the loss lets you know others have the same feelings and questions
and you are not alone. Or perhaps you know someone mourning,
invite them. This ten week series of meetings will be using the book
Understanding Your Grief by Alan D. Wolfoert, Ph.D.
If you are interested or have questions, please call Karen Metzger
at 765-482-5491 or the Parish Office. The date and time of future
meetings will be set after speaking to those who wish to participate.
That Man Is You Attention Men...are you looking to deepen your relationship with
God? Be a better husband? Become a more loving father? Build
friendships with other like-minded men? And seek to be the best
man you can be? Then Come Join…That Man is You! on Friday morn-
ings beginning Friday, September 11 from 6:00 am to 7:30 am. You
may register through the Parish Website or at the Parish Office.
Shalom House Lunch Mark your calendars for Saturday, November 14 to serve those in
our community by helping prepare lunch at the Shalom House. We
