Principal’s Report

Welcome Back The term has shot away quickly with all students settling back into routine. We welcome a number of new students and welcome back some returning students.

School Captains Congratulations to those Year 11 students who were nominated for the 2019 leadership team positions. Their speeches to the student body were outstanding and some of the best I have heard. All students conducted themselves well and any one of them could have led the school student body. All candidates and their parents/carers should be proud of their efforts.

The newly elected leadership team consists of six students: School Captains - Alejandro Crossley & Naomi

Eastwood Vice Captains - Evan Byrne and Allie Wood Prefects - Lachlan Macansh and Tahnee Conroy.

CAPA Evening Last night I had pleasure of attending another outstanding Glen Innes High School CAPA event. I was again amazed and astounded by the depth of talent we have in Glen Innes in the areas of art, drama, dance and music. Well done to all involved in creating another very polished and great night at the Chapel Theatre.

Director Visit Today Matt Hobbs, Director Educational Leadership Northern Tablelands Principals Network, visited Glen Innes High School and addressed our school community about feedback from recent interviews.

Education Week 2018 - Celebrating Public Education Next week is Education Week with this year’s theme being “Today’s schools - creating tomorrow’s world”. Please come along to the Glen Innes Town Hall on Thursday 9 August from 11:00am to see performances, presentations and displays from students that attend the public schools of Glen Innes and the surrounding district.

There will be a sausage sizzle operating on the day with a sausage sandwich able to be purchased for a gold coin donation towards “R U Aware We Care”, New England & Northwest Drought Appeal”. For more information about this charity please go to: www.ruawarewecare.com.au

Bronze PBL Award Ceremony A Bronze PBL Award Ceremony took place on Friday 27 July with 40 students having gained 200 PBL (Positive Behaviour for Learning) points. This term’s PBL focus is “Making it Right” and staff will be delivering six lessons to each year group during the term. Our first lesson held this week revisited and emphasised our PBL course values of Respect, Responsibility and Diligence. We hope all students embrace these ideals and values to ensure the best possibility for all to learn and succeed.

Year 12 Trial Exams Our Year 12 students will undertake their trial exams in Weeks 4 & 5. Remember, it is never too late to study and ask questions. We hope all students take the opportunity of Night Library and Morning Library to assist them in efforts to be/do the best they can.

Aboriginal Homework Centre Every Monday from 3:30pm to 5:00pm, an Aboriginal Homework Centre operates out of the School Library.

Year 10 Subject Selection Evening Year 10 students and their parents and carers are invited to the Subject Selection Evening to get information about HSC subjects. This will take place from 6:00pm to 8:00pm on Monday 13 August.

Staff Changes We welcome Tanea Bower who will replace Mary-Anne Ahearn who was in science. I am sure Miss Bower will enjoy the next two terms at Glen Innes High School.

Inspiring Australia’s Young Scientists We are very proud of Maddie Jones in Year 11 who applied and went through a rigorous and competitive selection process to be chosen for the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF). This program is sponsored by Rotary.

The NYSF Year 12 Program is a 12-day residential program, that takes place in Canberra or Brisbane in January 2019. It is designed to give students a broader understanding of the diverse study and career options available in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and to encourage continued studies in these fields. Participants also take part in sessions on entrepreneurship, critical thinking, how to work together effectively, and more. The focus is not solely on academic achievements, but on developing well-rounded individuals who have the skills and confidence to determine their futures.

Maddie will: visit science and technology related laboratories and facilities, go on site tours, listen to lectures, take part in workshops, go to social events, and participate in group activities that improve

communication and presentation skills.

Congratulations Maddie Jones. Past participants in this program speak very highly of their experience and we are very excited for Maddie to have this opportunity as well.

Driving and Parking Safely Near our School

The beginning and end of the school day are busy times for pedestrians and drivers outside schools. You can help keep children safe by remembering the following:

drop your child off and pick them up on the school side of the road

never call out to them from across the road - it is very dangerous

always take extra care in 40km school zones

park responsibly even if it means you have to walk further to the school gate

never double park - it is illegal and puts children at risk

never do a U-turn or a three point turn outside the school as it puts children at risk of harm

model safe and considerate pedestrian and driver behaviours to your child

always give way to pedestrians particularly when entering and leaving driveways

follow all parking signs - these help keep your child as safe as possible.

The parking signs at the front of our school, Edward Street, are as follows:

No Stopping In the area in the direction of the arrow you must not stop your vehicle at any point on the road or kerb.

45o Angle Parking/No Parking Always park your car in the direction of the arrow at an angle of 45 degrees with the rear of your car to the kerb. During the time of 8:00am to 9:30am and then 2:30pm to 4:00pm on school days, the area in the direction of the arrow, No Parking rules apply: you must complete the dropping off, or picking up of

passengers or goods within 2 minutes after stopping you must remain in or within 3 metres of the vehicle mobility Parking Permit holders are allowed to park for up

to 5 minutes in a No Parking area.

No Parking During the time of 8:00am to 9:30am and then 2:30pm to 4:00pm on school days, the area in the direction of the arrow, No Parking rules apply: you must complete the dropping off, or picking up of
