The theme for NAIDOC in 2016 is ‘Songlines’ and we began the day with a welcome assembly, showcasing the amazing talents of our students. Everyone, from Kindergarten to Year 6 had been learning the song ‘Raining on the Rock’ over the past term and to hear all the students performing the song together was spectacular. We have also had a very dedicated group of girls who have been studying the art of Aboriginal Dance with the guidance of Karen Potter, and performed with the song and after the song. The girls were accompanied by the Term 2 DRUMBEAT students and special guest, Al Weatherall who played the didgeridoo. During the welcome assembly, Uncle John Kirk gave the Welcome to Country and Layla Mackay and Aalihya Fields gave the Acknowledgement of Country. Dainaihya Speedy( Year 2) and Jalinta Smith (Year 4) explained to the school and our special guest “what NAIDOC means to their family.” All four girls should be very proud of their confidence and the way they spoke on stage. We were also treated to a Traditional Smoking Ceremony. Al Weatherall and Karen Potter explained how the smoke would cleanse the school and ward off bad spirits. Following the assembly, students spent time rotating through the school and participating in a number of activities involving Aboriginal dance, music, language, local history and artefacts, storytelling, bush tucker, art and more. Each of the activities was supported by a local Aboriginal Community member, including parents, the Department of Education, National Parks and Wildlife Service, Glen Innes Lands Council, Armajun Aboriginal Health Service and Family and Community Services. It was wonderful to see so many Ngoorabul Elders and Aboriginal representatives from outside agencies joining together to celebrate NAIDOC. The students were incredibly engaged in all of the activities and there was a positive buzz in all learning spaces. The welcome assembly was especially moving and showcased the talents of our students. Thank you to everyone involved in making our NAIDOC Celebrations a success. Book Club Book Club is due on Thursday 4th August 2016. Please ensure your book club order is complete with your child’s full name and class. Cheques are to be made payable to Glen Innes Public School.

Principal’s Report

Welcome back to Term 3. I trust that everyone had a nice break with their families and are keen to get back into the school rhythm.

Our school community celebrated NAIDOC Week last Wednesday and we had a huge day with a large number of community members attending. It was fantastic to see everyone at the celebration, getting involved with the many activities organised. Thank you to Mrs Nikki Lee and Mrs Karen Potter for organising the day.

Next week we will be inviting families into our school and classrooms to celebrate Education week. Glen Innes Public School is a wonderful learning environment and we are very proud to open the doors and allow people in to see how good our school is. More information about Education Week will be provided in this Newsletter.

Congratulations to the Senior Boys football team for winning their knock out game in Tamworth yesterday. The boys and Mrs Bower are having a great run in the competition and we are very proud of their achievements. Good luck to all the students competing in the regional athletics carnival on Friday.
