SwimmingSecond year head coach Mariusz Podkoscielny leads a Miami squad hop-

ing to build on the success of last season while making a mark during theirinaugural season in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Miami returns 12 letterwin-ners while welcoming 10 newcomers.

"This season we’re looking to take a larger group to the NCAAChampionships and score at that level," said Podkoscielny. "If our season goeswell we can start looking at a Top 25 finish as well as establish ourselves as alegitimate contender for Top 10 in the nation."

In a big step up from last season and in order to remain competitive, theHurricanes have upgraded their schedule tremendously from the 2003-04 cam-paign. Along with a full ACC slate, Miami is set to compete against eight teamsthat finished in the Top 25 in the nation last season. The Hurricanes can expectan emotional and fiery environment whenever they face their rivals from thestate of Florida, not to mention, the existing rivalry with Virginia Tech who alsomade the move to the ACC from the BIG EAST. "Our meet against VirginiaTech always motivates and moves us," commented Podkoscielny.

The top returner for the Hurricanes is senior Manon Van Rooijen, who didnot compete during the 2003-04 season in order to train for the 2004 Olympicsin Athens, Greece. The 100 and 200 freestyle record holder will compete inboth distance and sprint freestyle events. "I have high hopes for Manon," saidPodkoscielny. "She gained experience on the international level and that shouldhelp us this year."

Fellow senior Katalin Ferenzci will join Van Rooijen while holding the schoolrecord in the 100 and 200 backstroke. Also contributing for the Hurricanes willbe Miami’s only juniors, Adrian Ferguson. Ferguson will swim butterfly, freestyleand individual medley. Ferguson and and senior Mary Carriere have beennamed team captains for the 2004-05 season.

Coach Podkoscielny expects his sophomore class to become leaders inthe squad this year, "They will be more confident knowing what it takes to get tothe Conference and post season meets." BIG EAST runner-up Tara Erwin willhead up the sophomores with the support staff of Nancy Gajos, AndreaHughes, Kristen Lunak and Ashley Knapp all four swimmers qualified for theBIG EAT Championship last season.

The Hurricanes’ freshmen class which is comprised of 12 incoming rookieswill be lead by Lauren Shue, Taylor McFarlane and Melinda Hochard. All threeswimmers were state champions in their respective events. "I’m confident in ourfreshmen class, said Podkoscielny. They’re already contributing in a big wayand will be major players in the dual meet season. They will lead the way."

"Having almost half the team as freshmen will make it more difficult butthey’ll gain a lot of experience," added Podkoscielny. "We’ll rely a lot on ourfreshmen. They’re going to have to learn quickly."

Event OutlookMiddle Distance and butterfly looks to be Miami s strongest events. The

middle distance events will be powered by 200 free record holder Manon VanRooijen while butterfly has the luxury of having the most depth with three swim-mers who qualified for the BIG EAST Championship.

The distance freestyle group of Tara Erwin, Mary Carriere and sophomoreHallie Turkish should also see some success with the addition of newcomerLauren Shue, who garnered a state title in the 500 freestyle as a senior in Ft.Myers High School.

Backstroke will continue to be a solid event for the Hurricanes with KatalinFerenzci at the helm. The sister tandem of Ashley and Lindsay Knapp shouldalso score points for Miami.

Breaststroke will be headed up by senior Colleen Adkins and sophomoreKristen Lunak.. Injuries may become a factor throughout the season, however, which puts a question mark on the team s depth in this event.

Diving Head coach Randy Ableman returns for his 16th season as the head coach

of the Miami diving team with an experienced group of returning divers and atalented newcomer.

Leading the way for the men is senior and three-time All-American MiguelVelazquez, who should compete for an NCAA title. "Miguel has unfinished busi-ness in the NCAA Championships," said Ableman. "He should win one of thethree events. He’s equally good on all levels."

Derek Starks returns for his second season as a Hurricane. Last year’s BIGEAST Diver of the Year, is expected to challenge for All-American honors in alldiving events.

Sophomore walk-on Toby Brooks competed last season but was plaguedwith an injury-filled year that sidelined him for the BIG EAST ConferenceChampionships. "If he remains healthy," commented Ableman "he should beable to contribute."

On the women’s side, senior Melanie Rinaldi rejoins the diving squad aftertaking a year off to train for the Olympics. Rinaldi will be out until aroundChristmas time, however, due to knee surgery. "What Melanie does when shecomes back," noted Ableman "depends on her recovery."

Sophomore Heather Bounds returns for her second season after narrowlymissing the NCAA Championship last season. Bounds should contest for thetop spot among ACC divers as well as a berth to the NCAA Championships.

Diving’s only newcomer Jenna Dreyer joins the team fresh off the 2004Olympic games where she competed for her home country, South Africa."Jenna’s a great talent," said Ableman. "She could be an All-American this season."

W ith an experienced group of returning swimmers and divers, as well as atalented corps of newcomers, Miami’s swimming and diving squad should beprimed for success both in the ACC and the NCAA.

MariuszPodkoscielnyHead Swimming CoachSecond Season

Mariusz Podkoscielny enters his second sea-son as the head coach of the Miami women’sswim team.

In his first season at the helm of theHurricanes’ swimming program in 2003-04,Podkoscielny led a Miami squad composed of 11newcomers to a dual record of 5-7 highlighted bywins over Michigan State, Houston and inner-city

rival Florida International.Podkoscielny sent 11 Miami swimmers to the BIG EAST Championships in

his first season, posting an eighth-place finish overall at the conference champi-onships.

For the lastthree seasons, each of his teams at OSU has gone to the NCAAChampionships.

Podkoscielny’s success in the coaching ranks stems from his personalexperience as swimmer. One of the most highly decorated swimmers inArizona history, Podkoscielny was a 16-time All-American and won a NationalChampionship in the 1,650 freestyle as a freshman. While at Arizona,Podkoscielny set school records in the 200, 500 and 1,650 freestyle and ineach of his four years finished among the top three nationally in the 500 and1,650 freestyle events.

Representing the Polish National Team, Podkoscielny finished fifth in boththe 400 and 1,500 freestyle at the 1988 Olympics, and set the Olympic recordin the preliminaries in the 400 freestyle.

Dear Prospective Student-Athlete:

As a prospective student-athlete, you may have the athletic potential to swim and dive at the Division I level. If so,you probably will be exposed to an enormous amount of recruitment activities from universities across the country.

Throughout the recruitment process, coaches will reference various NCAA rules and regulations. The rules aredesigned for various reasons. The most important of which are to ease the pressures on prospective student-athletesand to level the playing field so that all universities operate within the same guidelines.

During the recruiting process you may have the following questions:When and how often can I visit an institutions campus? When, where and how often can a coach telephone me?How many times can a coach observe me in practice and/or competition? What academic criteria must I meet to be eligible to swim and dive at the Division I level? The answers to these questions and more can be obtained from the University of Miami Compliance Office or the

NCAA by requesting the NCAA Guide for the College-Bound Student-Athlete. The guide may be provided to a prospec-tive student-athlete at any time. The guide addresses issues related to Divisions I, II and III academic eligibility, financialaid, recruitment and more.

To receive a copy of the guide call the NCAA Hotline at 1-800-638-3731 or request it from the University of Miamicoach who is recruiting you.

Please remember that since violations of NCAA rules during your recruitment could jeopardize your athletic eligibility,it is important for you and your parents to be informed and to ask questions throughout the recruiting process.

Best of luck and GO HURRICANES!Sincerely,

Tony HernandezAssistant Athletic Director for Compliance
