Dear Parents and Carers,
New Principal Announced
Once again it has been a busy fortnight since the last newsletter. The relieving principal for next year has been announced. His name is Daniel Roe. He is very experienced and looking forward to living in our beautiful part of the world and meeting the Quaama School community.
Book Fair
From all reports Book Fair was a great success
and it was terrific to see the excitement generated
in the students when choosing their books. My
thanks to Mrs Summers and friends for hosting
the event. Book Fair was a huge success and Mrs
Summers asked me to especially thank parents
for buying so many books for their children. As a
result the school was able to choose $658 worth
of books for the library and to use as book prizes
for Presentation Night. A big thank you to parents
who bought books for the library from Mrs
Summers ‘Wish List” book display. Donated
books to the library will feature a book plate
noting the name of the child and family posted in
the front of book.
Wonders of Living Program
Earlier in the year Mrs Summers hosted the
YPEP Program which has been a terrific lead in to
the stage 3 Year 5/6 Human Sexuality unit called
the “Wonders of Living”, which Mrs Summers
began delivering last week. The program will run
over a 5 week period.
Life Skills Program
The Life Skills Program continues to be highly popular with the students. This week the gardening group continued the planting of shrubs around the school gardens and cultivation of

seeds. The aroma wafting out to the playground from the cooking group excited the taste buds. The sewing group under the direction of Ashton and Mrs Hobbis are busy creating place mats which will feature embroidery.
SCLC Band Visit
Next week the SCLC Band will be visiting the school on Wednesday at 11.30am. Their last performance at the school was most entertaining. Parents and carers are more than welcome to come and join us.
Special Swim Scheme
Yesterday a note was sent out on School
Stream for the Special Swimming Scheme
which entails 10 lessons over two weeks, (all
year 2 and 3 students plus selected students
in Years 4 and 5).The cost per student is $30
unless students have a season pass at
Cobargo Pool. Cost of the bus travel has
been paid for through a Sporting Schools
Grant.
Thank you to those parents who are
continuing to pay monies owed for the Swim
for Sport program.
Peer Support Camp
The Year 6 Peer Support Camp is looming. This is a terrific transition camp to high school with students making friends with future classmates at Bega High School from other small schools and meeting future senior high school buddies and teachers. Please pay the $50 dollar non-refundable deposit so that numbers can be confirmed for the team planning the camp. Total cost of camp to parents is $75 (actual cost $154). Year 6 students will conduct fund raising activities at the orchard opening day hoping to fundraise around $500 to cover camp costs.

A few Twists and Turns at the Bournda
Camp
Unfortunately last week’s catastrophic rated
bushfire warning resulted in the national park
being closed which dramatically changed our
camp plans. Thanks to the extraordinary
dedication of the Bournda Environmental
Education Staff we still had 3 amazing days of
fun and learning. Our planned activities could
no longer take place but thanks to the quick
thinking of the Bournda team we all piled into
the bus and cars Monday morning and hit the
road.
The first activity was a guided walk by
Bournda’s marine biologist, Luke, who took us
on a walk on the boardwalk at Merimbula. We
all learnt a great deal from Luke and saw many
things including a sea slug that shot purple ink,
mangrove plants and Neptune’s Necklace
(beaded sea weed).
Then a detour to Spencers Park to play
2/3 Classroom News
I was really impressed with our kids as we
waved them goodbye on the school buses to
go home for the night. They understood that
our plans had changed but were accepting that
tonight was a night at home and not camping
in the bush.
Day two and we met up with Luke at the Bega
River mouth. Two teams of student marine
engineers took on the task of building rafts
from a limited supply of materials. Amazingly
both rafts held together and the teams floated
away into the distance. Much energy was
expended and lunch devoured quickly before
we were off to the rock pools on the south end
of Tathra Beach. This involved a bit of rock
climbing which tested Mr Sull out, but didn’t
seem to be any problem for the kids. Again
Luke had lots to talk about and the kids had a
ball exploring the rock pools. A large rock or
two, cliff like ledges and we were back walking
up Tathra Beach to the playground. We said
goodbye to Luke and the adults had another
opportunity to watch kids burn more energy. In
fact it was so tiring I needed hot chips to eat
while supervising them, (the kids got some
too!) Not satisfied with that burst of activity we
then completed 30 second rotations on the
fitness equipment which we passed on the
way back to our transport.
Back at school and the kids put up tents or set
up sleeping bags in the classroom and then
the chefs in the gang cooked rissoles,
sausages and onions complemented with a
side salad. The meat was cooked to perfection
and I think I ate too many sausages, but I
really needed the energy that they provide.
Dinner done and games on the oval ensued.

(expend a bit of energy) on our way to the
Merimbula Aquarium. We had a great tour
there and Luke was really in his element
talking about the fish and creatures that lived
in our local seas.

As the sun dipped below the western ranges
Doug from Bournda appeared with boxes of
interesting items! We looked at stars with
ipads that had an app which identified the
planets and constellations, viewed the moon
through binoculars and spotted a few
satellites. The night finished off by watching a
few dance routines through a night vision
scope.
Bed time and all were asleep by 10pm (nearly
all). Laying in my swag in the darkness I
awoke to the sound of early morning bird calls.
No, not birds, but the in depth discussion from
a boys tent next to me. Quite entertaining until
I checked the time…….3.45am. The boys
talked till sunrise.
More chefs were discovered that morning and
all enjoyed a bacon and egg roll. Tents and
swags were packed away and off to another
park to burn a little more energy before arriving
at Magic Mountain. A fun day was had and I
sharpened my driving skills on the go-karts,
beating all the kids and proving to be pretty
fast on the toboggan ride.
Our students behaved beautifully and were a
pleasure to be with. My thanks to Barb and
Shannon and their fantastic efforts during the
camp to keep the students safe, happy and
entertained. I have been on many camps over
the years and this one was up there with the
best of them.
Musings from our Campers
My favourite thing on camp was the toboggans at Magic Mountain. I was nervous at first but when l got used to it l was fine. Tom and l had at least ten races, l won most of them though. When l was going up the tow wire l fell off and Tom had to push me up. By Django
My favourite thing on Monday was visiting Spencer Park and climbing on the dragon’s snout. On Tuesday the thing I loved was raft making, because we got to test if it floated by sitting on it in the water and Mr Sull said I am a true scout. On Wednesday at Magic Mountain my favourite thing was the toboggans. By Abbi My favourite part of the camp was when we went to Magic Mountain and rode the Toboggans. They go super-fast and that made me feel really happy. I liked the rollercoaster too, because it went really fast downhill and the black hole was a lot of fun, because it was really dark. By Adam
One of my favourite things on camp was cooking. I enjoyed it because we got to cook food for dinner and it was really fun and yummy. I learnt to not put your hand near the BBQ because it is hot and it will burn you. By Tommy At Magic Mountain I went on the black hole waterslide, the toboggan ride and the roller coaster. The rollercoaster was insane! We also slept at school. At school we cooked dinner and after dinner we went stargazing out on the top oval. Barb also gave us glow sticks to use in the dark. The next morning we had a big breakfast and enjoyed a day at Magic Mountain. By Reace

I enjoyed lots of activities. Stargazing was one of the interesting activities and I enjoyed learning how to use the app on the iPads to show what the name of star was in different locations. The aquarium had many fun, colourful and interesting creatures and the teachers were able to tell us lots of interesting facts. By Leeroy.
My favourite thing was the toboggan, but I nearly fell off. It was fun because Matika and I had a lot of turns on the toboggans. Stargazing was also something I enjoyed. We used the iPads to look through at the stars which told us the names of the stars. We got to camp at the school with the teachers and it was fun. By Willa
Last Monday we said farewell to our student
teacher Shannon Wornock who had just
completed a five week practicum. She will be
missed by all and we all wish her the very best
in her teaching career.
Hello from the 4/5/6 Classroom,
It’s hard to believe that we are past the half
way mark in the term! We have been very
busy in our classroom over the last few weeks
engaging in lots of hands on work. We have
designed products for our Mappen product
stall, ready to be sold at the end of year school
fair. Everyone has been working through the
design process in their collaborative learning
groups to design, create a prototype and
budget for what they have decided to make.
It’s been a great learning experience and has
enabled everyone to think outside the box and
be creative.
We have been continuing to enjoy our
Japanese sessions with Mayumi and are all
developing a fantastic Japanese vocabulary.
This week, we participated in some Japanese
nature art, we used a selection of plants to

4/5/6 Classroom News
K/1 Classroom News create images on paper. These all turned out
fantastic and it was very hard to have to pull
the masterpieces apart at the end of the
session.
This term, we have been fortunate enough to
be able to borrow a 3D printer through the
Department of Education’s STEM Share
Program! Yesterday, everyone in the 4/5/6
class explored the 3D printing design program
‘Tinkercad’ and have started to design our
creations decorations ready to print. It will be
very exciting for everyone to see the amazing
technology at work.
This week,
everyone has
started planning
stalls for our school
fair that will be held
in the last week of
term. Last year, the
fair was a huge
success, with lots
of people attending
and enjoying our stalls. I am sure that this year
will be equally successful, especially with the
orchard opening on the same day!
Have a great week!
Mrs Ferris
Hello from the kinder and year 1 classroom, where we are all busy completing assessment tasks for our December reports. The end of the year is drawing close – we can’t believe how quickly the term is disappearing!
Every week lots of great things happen in our classroom and in our school. What a busy day we had yesterday when all of the children from Cobargo Preschool visited us for their annual excursion! What fun we had helping and playing with the pre-schoolers and what delightful children they are! Many of our students commented about ‘how tiring the pre-schoolers were!’
In our Mappen unit this term, we had to create a character from a fairy tale and design background scenery for the story. Can you guess which stories these characters are from? Our next task is to create a diorama about our chosen story in a box. If anyone has any smallish boxes (no smaller than shoe boxes), it would be great if you could send them into school!
