Midwest Clinic Reflections By George Quinlan, Jr.

Many of us enjoy the Midwest Clinic as a delightful December ritual that re-mains a constant in our ever-changing lives. A time to refresh, learn new things, strengthen our relationships, and ease into the Holiday season.

The 67th Annual Midwest Clinic was no exception. The IL-IN-MI was well rep-resented with fine performances by school ensembles from McCracken MS (Skokie) - Chip DeStefano, Lockport HS - Brian Covey & Andrew Beckwith, Wheeling HS-Brian Logan, Creekside MS-Wendy Higdon & Chris Grifa, VanderCook College of Music—Dr. Charles Menghini & Stacey Lar-son Dolan, Naperville North HS-Dan Moore & Brian Van Kley, and of course, the Michigan State University Wind Symphony.

Professional musicians from the Chicago Symphony Brass section, Chicago Jazz Philharmonic, and the Chicago Chamber Musicians performed as well. Bryan Miller of Leyden HS conducted two reading sessions and Huntley HS Wind Ensemble—Nick Konwerski and Franklin MS Orchestra (Wheaton) - Carrie Provost participated in a Re-hearsal Lab Sessions. Many area educa-tors participated in educational sessions as well including: Greg Bimm, Ken Snoeck, Rachel Maxwell, Richard Dunscomb, Rob Parton, Rebecca Op-penheim, Brayer Teague, Bill Koch, Steve Nendza, Thomas Bough, Phillip Serna, Enrique Vilaseco, and my friend and Downbeat magazine editor, Frank Alkyer.

A very s p e c i a l treat was provided by East-man Mu-sic Com-pany - maker of the new 5 2 n d

Street Saxophones. Joining the Mark

O’Connor Quartet at the QF reception was the legendary Bob Mintzer. Mark serves on the QF Advisory Board and is a prominent teacher and saxophonist in the Chicago area.

Another personal highlight was seeing the recognition of the Music Industry award to NAMM president and CEO, Joe Lamond. During Joe’s leadership, NAMM has spearheaded many of the most successful music advocacy efforts in history including the creation of the Support Music Coalition, the “Washington DC Fly-In” national lobby-ing efforts for Music Education, and has played a prominent role on the Music Achievement Council. Bravo-well de-

served! You make the Music Industry proud of our partnership with Music Education!

Finally, as many of you may know, the Midwest Clinic was founded over six

decades ago by a college, a music pub-lisher, and a music retailer. The college, VanderCook College of Music has per-formed at every Midwest Clinic since it’s conception. (I proudly have served on the Board of Trustees for many years).

The publisher, Kjos relocated to sunny California but still is represented on the Midwest Board of Directors by Mark Kjos.

The retailer, Lyons Music no longer exists but the Midwest Board of Direc-tors has typically included a retailer for many years including Howard Lyons, Ziggy Coyle, & Denny Senseney. I am very proud and honored to have been invited to serve on the Midwest Clinic Board of Directors starting in 2014 and look forward to helping to carry on the proud tradition of excellence of this or-ganization.

Cleaning for Marching Brass Instruments

Looking for a great way to protect your

marching brass instruments AND stretch

your repair budget?

During the months of January and Febru-ary all marching brass instruments will receive a school discount of 20% on ul-trasonic cleaning. Are you familiar with this process? Ultrasonic cleaning is the most modern and simply the best method of brass in-strument cleaning. Replacing antiquated acids and chemicals, an ultrasonic ma-chine uses sound waves to clean your sousaphones, mellophones, and marching brass instruments. The ultrasonic process is environmentally friendly and safer for our technicians and your students. It is the most thorough and efficient method. Your instruments will be picked up, ultra-sonically cleaned, lubricated, restored to good playing condition with new corks and felts and returned to your school by your QF representative. Dent removal, silver hand-polishing, etc. can also be provided at additional cost to restore the beauty of your brass instruments!

ment was when our young conductor lead the Rise and Shine Orchestra - in-cluding members of the Chicago Symphony- in Merle Isaac's Apollo Suite. I can tell you that

that piece was performed with as much love as genuine musicians have for one another. Big smiles were in abundance. Imagine his future bio – at age 9 he conducted members of the Chicago Symphony… Then, immediately after the concert, I shouted ideas for the next concert and a couple things seemed to get the strongest response: that next year we perform Hoedown from Rodeo which then inspired the suggestion that we go FULL ORCHESTRA!!! Already enough wind, brass, and percussion musicians have agreed to join the group to make it possible. Let's DO it. And, let's go BIG! This summer June 21 will be on a Saturday. If we play at 10:00AM on a Saturday at Daley Plaza we won't have the same foot traffic that we had last summer. So, let's bring our own fans with us. Encourage your friends and relatives to attend the con-cert. There is a slight chance the concert may be at Millennium Park - slight. The City of Chicago and Rush Hour Concerts are working on that possibility right now which gives us another reason to think BIG! We have time that - given the nature of the CAN DO crowd that we are - all things are possible. The more that show up the stronger the message we send to our future orchestra friends. Here's what I mean. To me, my inspiration for Rise and Shine is to build on the theme of the public music festi-vals once held in downtown Chicago in the late 1800's that featured orchestras numbering in the hundreds. This is back when Cincinnati and Chicago were competing to be the cul-tural center of the Midwest. The CITIZENS OF CHICAGO (the past of which we will someday be among) hosted music festivals of

Discounted Instruments now Available! WHEW! The Midwest instruments are now secure and available for purchase at substan-tial discounts. We provided more basses and cellos than ever this year so the selection is wide ranging – top of the line fractional vio-lins and violas, full size cellos, and, either 3/4 or 7/8 basses. I’ve already received notes of thanks from the directors who used them and they mentioned their appreciation for the quality of instruments available to them for these performances. Now it’s your turn to take advantage of another of the many bene-fits we get from having the Midwest Confer-ence in our hometown.

Chicagoland Educator Orchestra

The collective energy of a mixture of genera-tions of orchestra teachers is vibrant. The Chicagoland Educator Orchestra is demon-strative proof that the Midwest verve is back. What a great room to be in when this group gathers. Bravo to you all!

From the Vendors Thank you for stopping by the vendor booths at Midwest! Your presence there enables me to garner the attention I need to keep Quinlan and Fabish on the vanguard of the string in-strument industry. For example, maybe you

noticed the Mittenwald, Germany made Leonhardt Montagnana cello at the Eastman booth? WOW! What an amazing cello. I ordered it last summer specifically for the Eastman Midwest booth. When Lynn Latham played it in her session, that was the first time I had had the chance to hear it. What a great sounding cello and it is made of beautiful wood. Someone is going to end up with a cello which, not only sounds amazing, it looks amazing too. Check it out:

Rise and Shine! Yes! Again! Last week I received word from both the Executive Director and the Artistic Devel-opment Director of Rush Hour Concerts that they not only would again like the Rise and Shine Orchestra to participate in Make Music Chicago event on June 21, But (*ahem*), they asked me to lead the group.

Sorry Ricardo. It's great news. The continuing response I have received since last June has been sin-cerely overwhelming. Now, to do it again! When I initially chose the literature for last year, I had no idea who would actually show up. So, I chose literature for all per-forming levels including first concert mate-rial. And, how beautifully tender the mo-

Lloyd Palmiter, our String Specialist, brings extensive knowledge to our company stem-ming from his twenty years experience teaching orchestra and cello; serving as a clinician and consultant for Conn-Selmer; and, from his experience as general manager of the Wil-liam Harris Lee Workshop. Remaining active as a clinician and teacher, Lloyd directs the Silver Strings Ensemble that consists of adult learners of the stringed instruments and has performed at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago. One of his specialties, orchestral workshops tracing the elements of the making of a stringed instrument and associating those to the elements necessary to produce quality tone on a stringed instrument, have become very popular with our Illinois and Indiana teachers. To schedule a workshop or step-up day, call

his office at our Burr Ridge location. He visits all store locations regularly and is available by appointment to individually help you and your students find just the right instrument. You’ve see Lloyd at conferences of IMEA, MENC, ASTA, Violin Society of America, and at the International Exhibition of violinmakers in Cremona, Italy, where he will be scouting to bring you the best quality instruments available from all over the world!

As I write this, “Snowmegeddon” is upon us. The buzz word seems to be “Arctic Vortex”, so now I feel like I’m in a George Lucas film. Enough about he weather though, let’s talk drums! Solo & Ensemble, Competitive Winter Percussion, Drum Heads, and Hearing protection from Etymotic: “You said WHAT?!?!??!”

Favorite Product Spotlight…and

testimonial: Etymotic Ear Plugs When I was about 12 years old, I was advised (me being a drummer) to wear hearing protection. Being at the “age of invincibility”, I blew it off. “When you’re young, we like it loud!” Never mind the future damage I would endure. A wide array of High School Band

activities, rock co ncer t s , and e s p e c i a l l y 4 additional years of Drum Corps drum lines & horn lines, I now “hear” the

effects. My ears always ring slightly, especially in quiet moments. Loud situations can quickly make it much worse. Looking back I wish I had listened, and began to wear ear plugs. I do now on most any occasion. If you’re a Director, and have students p l a y i n g p e r c u s s i o n i n d o o r s , practice rooms, gyms, etc., you OWE it to your kids to educate & encourage them to protect their ears. If not

REQUIRE it! All of that said, we carry a re-usable ear plug from Etymotic. “Ety Plugs”. Easy to use, and re-use. More comfortable than the roll up foam models, and only about $12 bucks! In researching

Etymotic’s other products, I also invested in some of their in ear, noise reducing headphones for my MP3 player. (Awesome, especially when travelling.) Not just for drummers, but all players. I hope you heard me! www.etymotic.com Music: If you’re in Indiana, ISSMA’s required list for percussion was updated this year. There are LOTS of new solos on there, so be sure to check it out! T h e s e d a y s “ R o w L o f f Productions” (www.rowloff.com) has a wide array of solo & ensemble choices. Below are some suggestions for bolstering your current library:

REMEMBER…….Just because the drum heads on your equipment are not broken, does NOT mean they don’t need to be replaced! Heads can have a pretty long shelf life, but there is a limit. Once the mylar loses it’s elasticity, tuning is almost impossible. If you have wisely invested in quality equipment, be sure to maximize it’s potential for quality sound. A new snare head, or new timpani heads, can make a HUGE difference in sound quality, as well as ease of tuning.

WGI – IPA Winter Percussion As I mentioned before, the competitive winter percussion season is upon us. Many may ask “what’s the big deal”, or “Marching band is over!”. This activity can provide a wide array of new opportunities. I realize it’s not for all programs….if you already have a laundry list of activities then continue on, business as usual. On the other

hand, if you have a difficult time holding on to membership numbers, can at least moderately fundraise, and have ample rehearsal space available, you might give it a try! You may be surprised at how many students would jump at the chance. You do have to evaluate your equipment, and understand you are adding an additional “season” to their wear and tear. But, the benefits to your students can yield a tremendous amount of participation and support. Even outside of your percussion section! (Just don’t forget the Ear Plugs!)

professional instrument and comes un-lacquered for a truly vintage appearance. I

t is an exceptionally responsive horn in all registers from low to high, and produces a big, fat sound with precise intonation. A larger bell and rolled-style tone holes contribute to the sound qualities of this instru-

ment that many compare to some of the great vintage horns of the past.
