President’s Message

Quilters throughout America will remember this year as Stash Buster 2020. Treasures that have been acquired over the years at quilt shows and shops and are being rediscovered on our sewing room shelves. Kits are being turned into finished projects, colorful fabrics are becoming Bright Star quilts, and thousands of fat quarters are now face masks. Many of us are accustomed to driving over to the local shop for just the right fabric to complete a quilt, but now we are learning to “make do” with what we have on hand. Considering the depth of the stashes some of us possess this should not be a problem, but it is a different mind- set. I just finished a baby quilt for a new grandson who was born in April. The main fabric had been purchased years ago before I even knew if there would be another grandson. When I started assembling the quilt, however, I discovered that I didn’t have the absolute perfect fabrics for some of the smaller design elements. In a normal year I would have solved the problem with a trip to Cottonwood, but this not being a normal year I went to my stash and found fabrics that would do. As I cut these fabrics I mentally apologized to my daughter-in-law, blaming my fabric choices on the Coronavirus. The quilt is finished, and it looks great! No apologies will be necessary. Of course, the lack of shopping opportunities has not been the only problem caused by the pandemic. For me, Tuesday mornings are just not the same without the camaraderie of my quilting friends, and I also miss seeing the other Moonlighters in person. Those of you from Nelson and Crozet are experiencing this same loss as we enter the fourth month of social distancing. Meetings, shows, workshops and other events have been cancelled. Chapter News

Crozet Quilters – Adrienne Granitz – Crozet members have been keeping themselves busy during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many members have been making masks for family, friends, local organizations, and healthcare facilities. One member has made more than 200 masks at this writing. We are also keeping busy turning those UFOs into finished projects. Bright Star quilts are also high on the to do list. Gardening, home improvement projects and long walks are high on the to do lists. Unfortunately, Tabor Presbyterian Church will not be available for meetings until sometime this fall. Hopefully, we can continue our charity work at home and be ready to put things together when we can meet again. We have several Hospice Quilts in progress and one finished ready for delivery when we can safely do that. Work on our Quilt of Honor block is ongoing. The due date for completion was this past Monday but will be extended until all blocks are completed. Because of COVID-19, Becky Cohen’s Princess Feather quilt will not be shown in Houston this year but has been moved to next year. The entire Princess Feather and Feathered Stars Exhibit has been held until next year. Her Baltimore Album quilt is going to be shown in AQS shows -August 5 at the Lancaster Nook show, Grand Rapids Michigan Aug 19-22, and Charleston, South Carolina Sept 30 - Oct 3 Moonlighters – Melinda Smith – Moonlighters have been enjoying our 2nd and 4th Wednesday meetings via Zoom. We are working on plans for this year’s Fall Fest and are hopeful that we can have an event either in person or virtually. We are also entertaining options for social distancing meetings such as outdoor meetings or in places we can spread out. We are sharing show and tell in a Facebook group I’ve set up for our members. If any of you would like to join our show and tell group, we’d love to have you join us. You can send me a request at my Facebook profile page or send me a friend request by clicking the link below. https://www.facebook.com/cantstopquiltin88. Moonlighters are looking forward to getting back to meeting and catching up on our projects soon! Nelson Quilters – Debbie Speilman – The Nelson Quilters are planning to meet June 15th if the social hall where we meet is open. It is large enough for us to socially distance and we plan to sanitize before we leave. Relay for Life is canceled for the time being. The flower fabric that was previously chosen for the Relay for Life quilt will be collected at our next meeting. Paula Davis will create packets with the flower fabric so we will be ready to work on the quilt again when the time comes. Our Quilt of Valor top is being pieced by Barbara Tinsley and the group will have to decide how to handle the presentation. The regular Memorial Day service was canceled. Autumn jellyrolls have been prepared for the Rainbow of Hope quilt that will be needed for the fall. Hopefully, that fundraiser will be held this year. Tuesday Morning – Corinne Conlon – Every Tuesday, since our last meeting in March, Tues AM quilters have been posting their show and tell projects via group email. Seeing what others have been creating is inspirational and makes us feel connected to one other during this pandemic. Last week we added a new feature, A Variation of My Quilt Life. Janet Saulsbury shared her biography and posted images of her wonderful quilts, a new one each day for 7 days. We have two more members ready to share their quilt life!

Bright Star Quilts

Quilters please know that you have provided enough quilts for the coming school year that the Bright Star students in the six schools of Clarke (36), Stone Robinson (18), Scottsville (18), Red Hill (18), Cale (36) and Woodbrook (36) will once again read a book and then sleep under a fabulous quilt during their nap time. And there were enough donated quilts that the CAQG board voted to provide the 36 quilts needed for the Bright Star program at Greer School. (It will be explained to the Greer Bright Star Staff that there is no guarantee that quilts will be given each year; it will be dependent of the work of the Guild members on a yearly basis.) If you have kept count, this makes a total of 198 quilts for the 2020-2021 school year. If the schools do not reopen this Fall, the children selected for the Bright Star Program will still be able to receive their quilts as there is a social worker connected with each Bright Star program and they work with the families on yearly basis. If you have finished a Bright Star Quilt, contact Karen Horridge and she will arrange for pick up. It is much easier to gather all year than it is for a mad scramble at one time. Some of these quilts will be shown at the Quilt Show in April. • Thank you Shelby Cosgrove, Mona Houle, and Ron Smith for machine quilting so many of the quilts. • Thanks for the entire guild for their contributions to the largest number of quilts gathered for one school year • Especially thank you for those who made an unbelievable number of quilts, including Betty Marshall, Marge White, Janet Saulsbury, Kirsten Niemann, Mary Diner, Linda Boone, Ann Cann. Whether you made one or 13, they were all adorable • Thank you, Ron Smith, Ann Robertson, Corinne Conlon, Kris Cushman and Susie Porter for being the deliverers of the quilts. • Thank you, Crozet Quilters under the direction of Lou Long for coordinating some dozen quilts that were designed to coordinate with books written by Carol Hair Moore. Quilt Show 2021

Update

In spite of the challenges of COVID-19, we are moving forward with plans to host our quilt show in April 2021. We may need to make a few changes to adjust to the “new normal” we find next spring, but so far we expect to continue on our original plans. So, what should you be doing in preparation.

CAQG booths: We collect homemade items for sale at two booths during the show. Last show, we earned over $2400 from these sales. Our Boutique sells items (e.g. Christmas ornaments, pin cushions, pot holders, greeting cards, etc.) for less than $25, and our Buy It, Take It (BITI) booth sells items (e.g. placemat sets, wall hangings, stacks of themed 6” squares, etc.) for $25 or more. As you finish created items, contact Alicia MacWright at [email protected] for the Boutique or Betty Marshall at [email protected] for the BITI booth for donation instructions. Raffle Baskets: Each chapter contributes a themed basket for the show. Last show, we earned about $375 for the tickets sold for the 5 baskets (Gardening, Kitchen 1 and 2, Animals, and Moon & Stars). Items in the basket do not necessarily need to be quilt or sewing related. Since most chapters haven’t been meeting, the themes for the 2021 show haven’t yet been chosen, but you can be thinking of themes that resonate with you and be prepared to make those choices when we begin gathering again. Chapter reps can contact Nadine Urban at [email protected] with chosen themes, since she will be coordinating this popular part of our show. Demos: For our last show, we hosted 8 well attended 20-minute free demos (e.g. Paper-piecing, Beading, Big Stitch quilting, etc.). Consider what topics you would like to see on our agenda and who might be willing to host a demo. Encourage your friends to share their talents. Contact our demo coordinator, Nadine Bird at [email protected] if you have any ideas. Vendors: Coordinators Ellen MacAvoy ([email protected]) and Toni Lockhart ([email protected]) are already working on contacts for our vendors. If you have an idea of who they may contact for interest, please touch base with Ellen or Toni. We raised over $800 in fees from vendors last show. We’ll be in touch again in the fall about how to register your quilts for the show and how to sign up for volunteer activities. In the meantime, we hope you are staying safe and thinking about how you can contribute to our show. Feel free to reach out to either Linda Boone ([email protected] ) or Betty Dietz ([email protected]) if you have any questions. Linda Boone Quilt Show Chair

Workshops 2020

Update

There is not a lot of news as far as Fall and Spring workshops these days. The instructor for our Fall 2020 workshops, Bonnie Hunter, announced that she was cancelling all of her workshops for the remainder of 2020. Those looked like great projects, and we were sorry to see them go, but we understand the decision. No replacement workshop is planned for this fall, and we hope to be able to bring Bonnie Hunter to teach for us another year. As the in-person meetings start up and people venture out of their homes, we will make a decision about when to resume mini-workshops. We have several promising teachers and classes lined up, but do not want to resume mini workshops until we get a feel for how comfortable our members and teachers are with meeting.

The Camden Bag series was suspended halfway through the project, with every intention that Ellen and Moira would complete the series. For those who want to attempt completion at home, there are construction tips and photos on the website. Once the Tuesday Morning meetings resume, we will schedule the final two sessions of the in-person Camden Bag Sew-Along series. One way or another, every effort will be made to help people complete the Camden Bag so that nobody ends up with one more UFO. All we can tell you for now is: Please check your email and the caqg website for updates. Ellen MacAvoy and Ginger Mirenda The Workshop Committee
