From the Principal’s Desk…………... Welcome to Term 3 Week 4 at Kilmore Primary School. 2017 Parent Opinion Survey Thank you to those families that have already completed the 2017 Parent Opinion Survey. If you received an invitation via email to participate I ask you to please take the time to complete the survey as your opinions are important to us and will contribute to the future management and organisation of our school. The survey is conducted online by ORIMA Research and should take around 15 minutes to complete. The survey is open now and will close on Sunday 27th August 2017. Wet Weather There are still a few instances where students are slipping over in puddles/mud during recess and lunchtime. I ask parents to ensure that each child has a change of clothes at school each day in their school bag if possible. Having clothes at the ready can save a lot of time and interruption to your day if we need to phone home for a change of clothing School Production Thank you to everyone who sent back their form with their ideals for the theme of our school production. Once the production committee have had the time to meet and discuss all these great suggestions we will let our families know what the theme will be. I am sure this will be another exciting event organized by our staff, students and families. Keep an eye out for more details to follow soon. Have a great week everyone!

Hello everyone! Turns out I’m not the only dog at KPS anymore. Have you seen the very cool displays at the office? Ms Dixon and Grade 2 students have made little dogs in art. They’re hanging out at the office in our new glass cabinets – the dogs, not the artists that is. It was Asha to the rescue on Monday morning. A tennis ball was drowning in a big puddle on the basketball court. No one had any gumboots to rescue it. So, with pawmission, I embarked on a mission. I bravely waded into the middle of the puddle, collected the ball and paddled back to shore. I was rewarded with not one, not two, but three of my doggy treats. I’m hoping for more tennis balls bobbing helplessly in puddles! There are so many things about to happen at KPS. Grade 3/4 camp, Grade 5/6 camp, a Grade 6 excursion to see my friend Zane at BSC and their school production, incursions, guest speakers, Book Week, Literacy & Numeracy Week to name a few. I’m tired just thinking about it. Definitely going to need a nap soon.

Some questions and comments that have put a smile on my dial this week… “Asha, have you just woken up?” “You’re my hero!” (After rescuing the ball from the puddle) “Want me to read you a story?”

Above: Each week I attend a library lesson.

Students take it in turns to read to me. Picture

storybooks, novels, non-fiction, I love them all.

This week it was Paul Jennings.

Above: Earn and Learn is in full swing.

If we all stick together (sorry, couldn’t

resist!) we’ll have hundreds of stickers in

no time at all. Please put any stickers in

the box at the office. Each sticker will

help us to buy new resources for our

Right: My School Captain friends went to a special presentation evening a couple of weeks ago. Bendigo Bank gave KPS a $2000 grant. Imagine how many carrots and tennis balls you could buy with that much money! Instead of carrots, Mrs Laffan used the money to help buy the glass display cabinets in the office area and the TV in the foyer which shows photos of our school events and activities. Probably just as well I wasn’t allowed to

attend the presentation night because

there was a buffet before the grants were

awarded. I wonder if there were

carrots…

Poetry Recital Competition

This term students have been practicing their fluency when reading poems. In the last week of term 4 KPS will be participating in a poetry recital competition with St Pats and the International School. All students are encouraged to present a poem to their class. Each grade will then select 3-4 children to recite their poem to their unit before a group of students will be selected to represent KPS at the Poetry Slam competition.

Children can either recite a poem that they wrote themselves or a poem by someone else. You can help your child by helping them to find a poem that they would like to recite and then help them practice learning and presenting their poem using the following tips:

‘HOW TO RECITE A POEM LIKE AN EXPERT ’

Choose a Poem that “Speaks to You” When choosing a poem to recite, be sure to pick a poem that you really like. The more you like the poem, the more fun you will have learning and reciting it. It’s Okay to YELL! There are lots of “right ways” to recite a poem, but in my opinion there is only one “wrong way.” The wrong way to recite a poem is to use your normal, everyday, “inside voice.” When you use your “inside voice,” you only speak loud enough for those closest to you to hear what you are saying. When you recite a poem, you need to speak loudly enough for everyone in the room to hear you. So the first and most important thing to know when you want to recite a poem is that you really need to face your audience and use your “outside voice,” even if you are inside. In other words, it’s okay to YELL when reciting a poem.

Memorise the Poem You Plan to Recite To recite a poem well, it’s important to have it firmly committed to memory. If you don’t have the poem memorized, you are more likely to make mistakes when reciting it, even if you have it written on a piece of paper in front of you. The best way to memorise a poem is to read a printed copy out loud as many times as possible. Depending on the length of the poem, you may have to read it out loud 10 or 20 times, or possibly even more, but each time you read a poem out loud, you will remember a little more of it.

How to memorise a poem: 1.Get a printed copy of the poem. 2.Look at the poem and read it out loud as the author would say it. 3.Turn it over so you can’t see it. 4.Recite as much of it as you can remember, from the beginning. 5.Repeat steps 2 through 5 until you can recite the entire poem from memory.

Word Problems Problem solving is one of the four proficiencies included in the Victorian Curriculum. It forms part of all units of work and we spend time learning about different strategies to solve problems effectively. One of the tools we use is the CUBES acronym. Students practise solving problems each week. Solve the following problem using the CUBES strategy! Asha spent $3 on a bag of carrots and twice as much on his schmackos. How much did he spend? If he paid with a $20 note, how much change did he receive?

Term 3, Week 4

What You Can Do @ Home to Help Prepare for Next Week’s Learning

F Addition Make up addition stories and act them out. Eg. There were three chickens in the coop and we bought two more. How many chickens are there now? Write it as a number sentence too. Eg. 3 + 2 = 5.

1 Time Find the day and date on a calendar. How many more days until the weekend? Until a special event? How many Tuesdays in August? What month comes after August? How many days are in each month?

2 Multiplication & Division

Look for opportunities to use ‘groups of’ in real life. Eg. Three dogs, how many legs? Solve the problem using multiplication. Write the number sentence. Eg. 3 x 4 = 12. Look for arrays in real life and use multiplication to find the total.

3 & 4 Addition & Subtraction / Shape

Addition & Subtraction: Practise adding and subtracting different amounts using the split strategy. Eg. 245 + 36 = 245 + 30 + 6 Shape: Use the words ‘corners’, ‘edges’, ‘faces’ or ‘vertices’ to describe shapes. Discuss the shape of each face.

5 & 6 Addition & Subtraction / Angles / Shape / Linear Relationships

Angles: Estimate the size of angles you find in the environment. Eg. Between clock hands on analogue clocks Shape: Take apart empty boxes from the pantry (with permission!) and explore their net
