Climate pattern rests on forests and trees.Deforestation causes excessive heat or cold, drought, and scarcity of water for agriculturefollowed by adverse climate changes.

Myanmar has annually held tree-plantingceremonies. Nay Pyi Taw Lewe saw acollective monsoon tree-planting ceremonythe other day. Under the project forestablishing a one-acre eucalyptus plantationa village, Minyay and Yetkansin villages ofTaungtha Village-tract planted 1200eucalyptus saplings and 800 teak saplings onboth sides of Yangon-Mandalay Highway.

Tree-planting ceremonies are being heldacross the Union. Taunglone Village inTaunggyi Township, Shan State held tree-planting ceremony on 11 June. Ye Townshipin Taninthayi Division planted 776 saplingsof teak, gangaw, starflower, eucalyptus, arthawka, hsi-thabye and tayoketei on 16 June.Kalay Township in Sagaing Division planted2000 teak saplings in the ceremonies.

Monsoon is the most suitable period fornurturing saplings. So, the people shouldgrow trees in their house compounds.Growing trees brings many benefits to thegrowers such as fruit, shade, raw materialsfor wooden utensils, leisure, and goodhealth.

Therefore, the entire people are exhortedto participate in the tree-planting ceremoniesand nurture trees for shade and consumption.

“The G8 may think to invite Chinato G8 summits from time to time inorder to encourage China to have aneven larger sense of responsibility,”Kazuo Kodama told a briefing onSaturday.

Inviting China to talks, “when it isappropriate... may be useful andproductive on specific issues,” heexplained. Asked whether Japan wantedthe G8 to become the G9, Kodama saidthe proposal was made “in a veryinformal exchange of views” at thejust-ended G8 summit in Huntsville, north of Toronto. NATO reports death in Afghan warin record month

KABUL, 27 June—NATO on Sunday reported another foreign soldier killedfighting in the Afghan war as the death toll for what is already a record monthclimbed higher. The death following a Taleban-style attack using a crude bombknown as an improvised explosive device (IED) happened Saturday in southernAfghanistan, NATO’s International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said. Itcomes after NATO reported Saturday that five soldiers were killed in similarattacks in the volatile south, bringing the total for the day to six. The nationalitiesof the dead soldiers was not disclosed, but the vast majority of foreign troops inAfghanistan are from the United States and are bearing the overwhelming burdenof deaths as the war escalates.

The ISAF report follows the announcement by Britain’s Ministry of Defencethat a soldier died Saturday after being wounded by an explosion in southernAfghanistan two weeks ago.

The deaths bring to 311 the total number of soldiers to die in Afghanistan sofar this year, with the number killed in June alone at 91, by far the deadliest monthlytoll since the war began in late 2001.

AFP tolls are based on a tally kept by the independent website icasualties.org.IEDs are causing most of the deaths. They are cheap and easy to make and are oftendetonated remotely and with deadly accuracy. Survivors often suffer life-changinginjuries.

The United Nations said this month that IED attacks had escalated 94 percentin the first four months of this year compared to the same period last year.

Global wind shifts may have ushered inwarmer climate at end of last ice age

NEW YORK, 27June— Scientists stillpuzzle over how Earthemerged from its last iceage, an event that usheredin a warmer climate andthe birth of humancivilization. In thegeological blink of an eye,ice sheets in the northernhemisphere began tocollapse and warmingspread quickly to thesouth. Most scientists saythat the trigger, at leastinitially, was an orbitalshift that caused moresunlight to fall acrossEarth’s northern half. Buthow did the south catchup so fast?

WASHINGTON, 27 June— The small number ofscientists who are unconvinced that human beingshave contributed significantly to climate changehave far less expertise and prominence in climateresearch compared with scientists who areconvinced, according to a study led by Stanfordresearchers.

In a quantitative assessment — the first of itskind to address this issue — the team analyzed thenumber of research papers published by more than900 climate researchers and the number of timestheir work was cited by other scientists.

“These are standard academic metrics used whenuniversities are making hiring or tenure decisions,”said William Anderegg, lead author of a paperpublished in the online Early Edition of Proceedingsof the National Academy of Sciences this week.

In a review paperpublished June 25 in thejournal Science, a team ofresearchers look to aglobal shift in winds forthe answer.

They propose a chainof events that began withthe melting of the largenorthern hemisphere icesheets about 20,000 yearsago.

The melting icesheets reconfigured theplanet’s wind belts, pushing warm air andseawater south, andpulling Carbon Dioxidefrom the deep ocean intothe atmosphere, allowingthe planet to heat even

further. Their hypothesismakes use of climate datapreserved in caveformations, polar icecores and deep-seasediments to describehow Earth finally thawedout.

Scientists say test couldpredict menopause

LONDON, 27 June—Doctors could one day use ablood test to predict decades in advance when womenwill go into menopause, scientists say.

In research to be presented on Monday at aEuropean fertility conference in Rome, Iranian expertssay their preliminary study could be a first step towarddeveloping a tool to help women decide when theywant to have children.

The test does not predict when women will losetheir fertility — which typically occurs about adecade before menopause — but if doctors knowwhen women will go into menopause, they cancalculate roughly when they will run out of eggs.Scientists say the test could be especially helpful inidentifying women who might go into menopauseearly — in their late 40s or earlier instead of theirmid-50s.

At the moment, there are few clues for doctors totell which young women may be headed for earlymenopause. Blood tests and ovary scans only givewomen a few years’ advance notice.

Iranian scientists took blood samples from 266women aged 20 to 40 and measured the amount ofanti-Mullerian Hormone, or AMH, in their bodies.Testing the amount of AMH in women tells doctorshow many eggs there are left in the ovaries. Two moreblood samples were taken in the following six yearsand physical exams were also performed.

Based on the amount of AMH women had, scientists used a mathematical model to estimate whenwomen would go into menopause.

LONDON, 27 June—Taking vitamin C and Esupplements will notlower the risk of the bloodpressure disorder knownas preeclampsia inpregnant women withtype 1 diabetes, a newstudy finds.

Women withdiabetes are at high riskfor preeclampsia (asudden increase in themother’s blood pressureafter the 20th week ofpregnancy), and priorresearch has suggested

risk of preeclampsia inwomen with lowantioxidant status at thestart of the study andappeared to reduce therisk of having a lowbirthweight baby (6percent vs. 10 percent). Also, fewer women in thevitamin C group hadpreterm babies.

Could breathing car exhausttrigger a stroke?

NEW YORK, 27 June—A Danish study hints that air pollution from car exhaustmight trigger strokes, although much more study is needed to confirm this, thestudy team notes.

In the study, short-term exposure to certain pollutants affected admission ratesfor mild, “ischemic strokes” at hospitals around Copenhagen, Denmark. Ischemicstroke, the most common type of stroke, occurs when a clot disrupts blood flow tothe brain.

The Danish findings, reported in the European Heart Journal, follow anotherrecent study that showed a link between long-term exposure to traffic-relatedpollution and stroke death rates in the United Kingdom.

Germany beats England 4-1 in World Cup

Germany’s Thomas Mueller, top, scores his side’s fourth goal past

England goalkeeper David James, bottom, during the World Cup

round of 16 soccer match betweenGermany and England at FreeState Stadium in Bloemfontein,South Africa, 27 June, 2010.—

INTERNET

BLOEMFONTEIN, 27 June—Thomas Mueller scoredtwice in the second half Sunday and England had agoal not awarded by the referee in a 4-1 victory that putGermany into the World Cup quarterfinals.

The 20-year-old forward finished two quickGerman counterattacks within 3 minutes to sinkEngland’s hopes of beating Germany at the WorldCup for the first time since the 1966 final.

England was not helped by referee Jorge Larriondawaving play on even though Frank Lampard’s first-half shot landed well past the goal line after hitting thecrossbar. Germany led 2-1 at the time.

Germany went up on goals by Miroslav Klose andLukas Podolski before Matthew Upson pulled a goalback in the 37th minute.

On Lampard’s non-goal, after the ball landedinside the goal, it ball spun back into the arms ofGermany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. England coachFabio Capello initially celebrated what he thought wasan equalizer by clenching his fists and shaking hisarms. But his face changed when he realized the goalhad not been given.

As the players walked off the field at halftime,Wayne Rooney walked over to the linesman whodidn’t flag for the goal and gestured with his handshow far he thought the ball had crossed the line.

In 1966, England and Germany were 2-2 in extratime in the World Cup final when Geoff Hurst’s shotstruck the underside of the crossbar, bounced downand spun back into play. That time, the referee consultedhis linesman, who awarded the goal.

Hurst went on to score a third goal in England’s 4-2 victory at Wembley.

Germany plays the winner of Argentina-Mexico,which is later Sunday.

Mueller scored on the counterattack in the 67thminute, having started the move after a long clearanceby Jerome Boateng. Mueller passed to BastianSchweinsteiger, who patiently dribbled upfield andran across the 18-yard line to feed the unguardedMueller. His shot hit the hand of England goalkeeperDavid James and went in.

SCIENCE DAILY, 26 June—Yale Universityengineers have for the first time created 3Dmodels of whole intact mouse organs, a feat theyaccomplished using fluorescence microscopy. The team reports its findings in the May/Juneissue of the Journal of BiomedicalOptics.Combining an imaging technique calledmultiphoton microscopy with “optical clearing”,which uses a solution that renders tissue trans-parent, the researchers were able to scan mouseorgans and create high-resolution images of thebrain, small intestine, large intestine, kidney, lung and testicles. They then created 3D modelsof the complete organs—a feat that, until now,was only possible by slicing the organs into thinsections or destroying them in the process, adisadvantage if more information about the sam-ple is needed after the fact.
