Palos Verdes Intermediate School Music Department Syllabus 2019-2020 School Year The Palos Verdes Intermediate School Music Department is a performance-based program. Through concerts, field trips, and community performances, we develop as musicians, and learn from and enrich the world around us. While performing a varied repertoire of music, each ensemble develops fundamental music theory skills in line with the California Standards for the Arts. Grades for ensembles will be based on: v Weekly scales/theory/playing tests (10-100 points each) v Trimester chair tests (200-300 points each) v MAP points (Music Activity Points) each student must have 100 MAP points per trimester v Concert attendance (proper concert dress, having instrument and music) 100 points v Daily participation (having instrument in working order, the correct music, and behaving in an appropriate manner) 25 points per class. Points will be deducted for the following infractions: 1. No instrument -10 2. Excessive talking -10 3. Tardiness -10 4. Failure to clean up after class -10 Music Activity Points MAP points are opportunities for music students to engage in music, support the arts, and promote good citizenship outside of the music classroom. Each student needs 100 MAP points per trimester, for a total of 300 per year. There are many ways to get these points throughout the year. You can earn MAP points by: v Participating in ASB/WEB or the school musical (300 points) v Switching to an instrument that your ensemble needs (300 points) v Playing in an outside ensemble (point value varies) v Bringing in supplies for the music department (point value varies) v Practicing in the music room before school or at lunch (10 points per session) v Putting away extra chairs and stands (5 points per item) v Attending MOD Pizza or other PVIS Fundraisers (25 points per visit)

2019-2020 School Year

The Palos Verdes Intermediate School Music Department is a performance-based program. Through concerts, field trips, and community performances, we develop as musicians, and learn from and enrich the world around us. v Participating in PVIS Music Department field trips (25 points) v Doing charity work for an outside group (10 points per hour) v Writing a paper about a concert, play, or other artistic experience (50

points per 1 page paper)

Concert Attendance Attendance at our two concerts is mandatory. The only excused absences are sudden illness or a family emergency. Our concerts are Tuesday, December 17th at PV High School, and Tuesday, June 9th at PVIS. Please make travel plans accordingly! Non-attendance at a concert will result in a loss of 100 points. Concert Dress For our Winter Concert and Festivals, we will wear black PVIS Music Department Polo shirts. These will be worn with black pants or skirts, black shin length or higher socks, tights, or leggings, and black dress shoes. For the Spring Concert, the polo shirt will be worn with shorts and gym shoes. Supplies These are the supplies that help the music department to run smoothly:

1. Kleenex 2. Top loading sheet protectors 3. Paper Towels
