The Purdue University Galleries offer a variety of art forms and exhibits throughout the year. Robert L. Ringel Gallery in Stewart Center and Fountain Gallery in downtown Lafayette feature artwork from regional, national and international artists as well as the permanent collection. Exhibits rotate every 6 weeks.

We are working to support the strategic plans of the university and the College of Liberal Arts, including a firm commitment to serving the needs of K-12 educators in the state of Indiana. Participatory art and writing opportunities, class visits to exhibitions, and professional development workshops for teachers are all vital to our plans to complement the work of regional educators. To inspire an understanding and appreciation of art in a time when arts activities in schools and field trips to cultural organizations have been curtailed, Purdue Galleries is taking a proactive approach and offering arts activities free of charge through ArtCart – essentially a “bookmobile for art.”

Over 5,400 objects are in the permanent collection, including historic to contemporary prints, photographs, and works on paper; Art of the Americas, including Native American baskets, Pre-Columbian textiles and ceramics, and paintings, drawings and prints by the Mexican Modernists.

Our partner site, the Patti and Rusty Rueff Galleries in Yue-Kong Pao Hall, have the unique perspective of being a teaching and research space for Purdue University students and faculty as part of the Patti and Rusty Rueff School of Visual and Performing Arts. Located in Yue-Kong Pao Hall, the Rueff Galleries offer exhibits and special events in service of the students and faculty, while also expressing perspectives that are national and international in scope. Exhibitions rotate every week or two throughout the Fall and Spring, providing a variety of projects and exhibitions in the areas of fine art, visual communications design, industrial design, interior design, theatre, dance, and music.

The artists in Shifting Spaces – Rachel Hellman (Terra Haute, IN), Ben Marcin (Baltimore, MD), and Ryan Parker (Philadelphia, PA) – draw inspiration from architectural environments, manipulating forms of color, line, and shape to reveal unique perspectives of space and place. Hellman, Marcin, and Parker work in a variety of media including drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, and video. The images fall between an abstract space and a figurative inhabitable one, underscoring the ambiguity of space and image and the visual tension between old and new technology. Together, the works pay homage to the urban landscape by acknowledging the surrounding architecture, the artist’s own hand, and the human experience.

Tom Berenz uses the disaster motif as a metaphor to discuss personal, socio-political, environmental and ideological issues in his large mixed media canvases. Through the motif of disaster, he explores the existential self and examines personal narratives, with some being more literal and others more enigmatic. The imagery is in constant flux, but always returns to a pile. “A pile is everything and it is nothing. It is a mound that once was and now isn’t; a mass of information, both physical and metaphysical, organized and chaotic.” Berenz is interested in blurring the lines between realism and abstraction, life and death, beauty and horror, devastation and the sublime. http://www.tomberenz.com

Urban Sediments depicts abstracted landscapes in the form of large-scale reliefs and a three-dimensional floating installation. Consisting of assorted torn paper and plastic pieces, these installations draw upon patterns from natural phenomena and urban architecture, blurring the lines between actual and imagined landscapes. The materials include scraps of the artist’s drawings, ink marks and fragments of photos depicting urban life. Together, they evoke the feeling of found objects or trash, like the strata in sedimentary rock, each layer documenting a distinct moment in time and suggesting a hidden narrative.http://www.ettyyanivstudio.com

The photographic narrative series Mr. Wild’s Garden recalls an elderly neighbor from the artist’s childhood who was isolated in a dilapidated house, concealed among overgrown weeds. The allure behind this mysterious man serves as catalyst to explore who he may have been by looking at the world through his eyes. Recounting the neighbor’s imagined life, the images challenge ideas of perception filtered by experience and faded memory, while what was once fact muddles into fiction. These photographs create a haunting presence while working to blur the line between dreamlike wonder and dark fantasy.http://d-weinberg.com/mr-wilds-garden

We are pleased to present the 18th North American Sixty Square Inches Small Print Exhibition, continuing a tradition begun in 1977. The exhibit presents a current review of North American printmakers working within a format of less than 60 square inches in image area, as delineated in the title of the show. These small works present the viewer with an intimate experience and invite close attention to the visual message.

Purdue Galleries are committed to the practice of acquiring new works from each Sixty Square Inches exhibition and building the collection of contemporary North American printmaking, while helping to support the community of modern artists. Galleries’ periodic printmaking exhibits feature hands-on relief printing demonstrations and presentations on the history and development of printmaking for the regional K-12 educational community.

The Guldagergaard International Ceramic Research Center is a non-profit institution with state funding from the Danish Ministry of Culture and the municipality of Slagelse. It operates with a special focus on artists-in-residence and on helping to foster an international network among artists.

360 Degrees of Separation will represent a select group of ceramic artists of international origins who employ different building and firing methods and who will represent a closely connected international circle of experiences through the Guldagergaard Program.

The permanent collection of Purdue University Galleries is home to a collection of Orthodox Christian icons, a gift of Katherine “Betsy” Scheuring. Russian iconography combines theological, aesthetic and technical considerations into powerful and intimate objects of beauty and devotion. Curated by Professor Ashley M. Purpura of the Purdue University Department of Religious Studies, this exhibition will center on how religious belief affects believers and their traditions, and will address themes of Hymns, Saint’s Stories, and Communities.

This special exhibition features a highlight of the Purdue Galleries collection, “Generator of Jobs,” a painting by American artist Rockwell Kent from 1946. Kent was commissioned by the Bituminous Coal Institute, the public relations department of the National Coal Association in Washington, D.C., to produce a series of 12 paintings to be used as advertisements for the coal industry. In 1948 the series was broken up and each painting was donated to a school with a well-regarded mining program.

The On or About exhibit positions the work as a source of inspiration and discussion alongside the works of local, regional, and national contemporary artists, illustrating how it can be viewed by contemporary artists from a variety of perspectives. Included will be additional works from the Purdue Galleries collection, the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette, and the Dayton Art Institute (OH).

Each year, the Purdue Galleries invites art teachers in regional K-12 programs to join us for a day-long session describing the upcoming year of exhibitions and events, renewing friendships, and networking with other art educators.

This year’s Teacher Day will be presented at both the new Fountain Gallery in downtown Lafayette and on the Purdue campus. Transportation has been arranged to get participants to and from campus. Included in this year’s Teacher Day will be presentations on this year’s schedule of exhibits, the potential for Galleries involvement in on-site class presentations and special projects, projects to explore recycled materials and printmaking, and tours of the Fountain Gallery and the Galleries on campus. Continental breakfast and parking vouchers will be provided for all Teacher Day participants.

Purdue Galleries offers credit to educators looking for opportunities to earn Professional Growth Plan (PGP) points towards license renewal. By attending our Art Teacher Professional Day, you can qualify to earn one point for each hour of participation. Certificates of participation will be available for anyone interested.

Please contact Craig Martin at [email protected] or 765-494-3061 to reserve a space.

making the arts happen

To inspire an understanding and appreciation of art in a time when arts activities in schools and field trips to cultural organizations have been curtailed, Purdue Galleries is taking a proactive approach and offering arts activities free of charge through ArtCart – essentially a “bookmobile for art.”

ArtCart has been made possible through the very generous support of North Central Health Services, Tippecanoe Arts Federation, Indiana Arts Commission and through the contributions of numerous Purdue students, particularly members of the Purdue Student chapter of the National Art Education Association, and staff and community volunteers.

We welcome your support! For information on Purdue Galleries outreach activities and events or volunteering with ArtCart, contact Craig Martin at [email protected] or 765-494-3061.

PURDUE UNIVERSITY GALLERIESIn order to help us continue the vital work of collecting and interpreting artwork for our audiences, we are asking for your donation to the Permanent Art Collection purchase

fund. Gifts of any denomination are welcome and will be recognized by Purdue Galleries and the College of Liberal Arts.

The Galleries are committed to the practice of acquiring new works from our long- running Sixty Square Inches exhibition series and building our collection of

contemporary American printmaking while helping to support the community of modern artists in North America. The Rockwell Kent exhibition affords the opportunity to obtain several original pieces by local, regional, and national contemporary artists

commenting upon one of our most important holdings, “Generator of Jobs” a painting by American artist Rockwell Kent from 1946.

All contributions received for Sixty Square Inches by Friday, December 4th will be recognized in the exhibition catalogue and at a special preview reception prior to the official opening. A similar preview will be held prior to On or About: Rockwell Kent,

at which donors will have the opportunity to meet the participating artists.

Please complete and mail this form with your payment or contact Purdue Galleries director Craig Martin at (765) 494-3061 or [email protected].

As always, your support – past, present, and future – is much appreciated.
