The Purdue Galleries offer a variety of art forms and exhibits throughout the year. Robert L. Ringel Gallery and Stewart Center Gallery feature artwork from regional, national and international artists as well as the permanent collection. These exhibits rotate every 6 weeks through the academic year.

We are working to support the strategic plans of the university and the College of Liberal Arts, including a firm commitment to serving the needs of K-12 educators in the state of Indiana. Participatory art and writing opportunities, class visits to exhibitions, and professional development workshops for teachers are all vital to our plans to complement the work of regional educators.

To inspire an understanding and appreciation of art in a time when arts activities in schools and field trips to cultural organizations are being curtailed, Purdue Galleries is taking a proactive approach and offering arts activities free of charge through ArtCart – essentially a “bookmobile for art.”

ArtCart is an outreach project providing art opportunities to inspire an understanding and appreciation of art in a time when arts activities in schools and field trips to cultural organizations are being curtailed. Like a bookmobile with art supplies, the ArtCart is equipped to transport supplies, easels, tables, and banners to neighborhoods, community centers, parks, and schools. Volunteers staff the project and provide art activities at no cost, making art a viable and accessible experience for young people.

ArtCart has made a number of appearances at schools, libraries and community festivals and has received Artist in Residency grant funding from Tippecanoe Arts Federation and Chase, Inc.

OPPORTUNITIES

Visits to Purdue GalleriesPurdue Galleries assists educators in fulfilling the standards set forth in the Indiana State Board of Education Academic Standards for Visual Arts by researching and producing exhibit related materials for class study; affording teachers the opportunity to bring their classes to our exhibits free of charge on grant-funded buses; providing students with vital firsthand experience with original artwork as opposed to reproductions; assisting students to describe, interpret, and make informed judgments about works of art through firsthand activities; and by offering professional insights into the creative process and individual works of art.

Annual participatory exhibitions offer the community the chance to utilize the galleries as an active art site and allow visitors to exercise individual creativity through direct participation with the display. Hands-on relief printmaking is conducted in connection with each printmaking exhibit and throughout the year. Busing provided by the Galleries through grant funding allows underserved K-12 students in rural areas to benefit from art experiences they would not normally receive.

Galleries staff will tailor class visits to the exhibits currently on display and the curriculum interests of the in-structor. PowerPoint presentations, hands-on activities, a Campus Art Tour and lunch at the Purdue Memorial Union Food Court are standard options. In addition, arrangements can be made for visits to the Yue-Kong Pao Hall of Visual and Performing Arts, the Black Cultural Center and other campus locations.

If you are interested in scheduling a class visit, please contact Mary Ann Anderson at 765-496-7899 or [email protected].

Art Teacher Professional Day

The Purdue Galleries present an annual Art Teacher Professional Day each fall. Art teachers in area K-12 programs are invited to join us for a daylong session describing the upcoming year of exhibitions and events, renewing friendships and networking with other art educators.

Included are participatory introductions to the current exhibits, presen-tations on ideas/activities for the art room, and discussions on the pos-sibilities for Galleries presentations on art topics and collection objects in schools. Continental breakfast and parking passes are provided for all participants.

If you are interested in attending a future Art Teacher Professional Day, please contact Mary Ann Anderson at 765-496-7899 or

[email protected].

Purdue Galleries is proud to present a highly creative, multi-faceted educational workshop developed in conjunction with Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette and Words on the Go. “Living Graphic Novel” offers the opportunity for students to develop short stories and illustrate them through the development of live “scenes” using actors, painted sets and framing devices, in the style of graphic novels or comic books. The project emphasizes literacy, writing skills, creativity and artistic design in a personalized and inventive activity that takes on the life the participants give it!

Visitors to Purdue Galleries may park in the Grant Street Garage across from the Purdue Memorial Union. Parking is free in “A,” “B” and “C” areas after 5:00 pm on weekdays and all day on weekends, unless otherwise posted. Parking is also available at metered areas on campus, unless the meters are designated for patrons of laboratories or medical facilities.

We recommend entering the Union from Grant Street. The Robert L. Ringel Gallery is located up the stairs on the Main floor, immediately to your left. To find the Stewart Center Gallery, proceed through the Union building, exit the far end and enter the next building, Stewart Center. You’ll find the gallery two-thirds of the way down the main floor hallway on your right.

Additional directions to Greater Lafayette and the Purdue University campus are available on the Purdue Galleries website, www.purdue.edu/galleries, under Tours and Visits.
