Ask pupils what they know about puppets. Perhaps you have a class puppet or the children have learnt with a class puppet in the past. What types of puppets do they know? Elicit different ideas such a glove puppet, finger puppet, marionette (puppet with strings), shadow puppets. Optional- show them the first minute video video and ask them which type of puppet it is (marionette because it has strings). Ask them if they have ever seen a puppet show. What did they see? Accept different contributions. Now read the article about the International Puppet Theatre Festival (Titirimundi) and complete the activities. Say: Now we are going to watch a short video from the Titirimundi festival. Show the children the first second. What can you see? It’s a puppet of an old woman. Where is she? On her balcony. Draw or write on the board these sentences (older children can copy them). 1. She sings a song. 2. She waters the plants. 3. She watches TV. 4. She cleans the balcony. 5. She dances. Read the sentences with the children. Ask them to predict which actions the old woman does in the video. Watch the video. Which action doesn’t she do? Answer: She doesn’t watch TV. Answers: 1. Read and circle the correct answer. a) puppets b) three hundred and thirty five c) in different cities d) five 2. Can you match the words to the pictures? Use the words in the box to help you. 1) a. Decorate the template. Cut it out and use glue to fasten the tabs. Give your puppet a name. Introduce it to your classmates. Show pupils an example of a finger puppet. Tell them they will decorate their own using the template. Allow time to do this and encourage them to be creative. Give some prompts about eye/hair colour etc. When they are finished, show how to glue the tabs to make a finger puppet. Ask pupils to think about the name of the puppet. Ask the children to introduce the puppet to the rest of the class. Fast finishers/higher levels can write a sentence to describe the puppet (age, place of birth, job etc.) Warm-up: Photo credit: Titirimundi.
