Two prestigious positions in two promi-nent medical societies is not surprising for ahard working doctor like Dr. Collantes. Sheprovides leadership in every endeavor sheundertakes.

Dr. Collantes’ innate generosity im-pelled a yearning for her to share her knowl-edge and wisdom, making her the most ef-fective and moving teacher as evidencedby the recognition award she received inthe year 2000-2001 as MCU-FDTMF MostOutstanding Faculty. Her contributions tothe hospital as well, were immeasurable. Shetook the lead in the establishment of theMCU Hospital’s hemodialysis unit whichstarted in the year 1990. “Vision, Commitment, andLoyalty”, three of the virtues aperson must possess to realizehis objectives and attain suc-cess in life.

Last September 15, 2011,Manila Central University paidtribute to one of its most re-nowned deans, Dr. FranciscoBaetiong, Jr., who retired fromservice as Dean of the College

An Evening with Frankby Dr. Christine S. Rodriguez, Optometry

of Optometry, ending morethan three decades of dedica-tion and selfless service to thecollege and the institution.

The event, dubbed “AnEvening With Frank”, wasattended by administrationofficials, fellow deans, unitheads, faculty members, stu-dents and friends, and washeld at the Internet Labora-

tory of the Learning Re-source Center.

Highlights of the activityincluded a video presentationof deans of the different col-leges delivering a message ofsend-off greeting and somebits of nostalgia with recollec-tion of unforgettable memorieswith Dr. Frank, and the most-awaited “unveiling” of the tar-

paulin showing Dr. Frank in acaricatured portrayal of the leg-endary Oscar statue.

No less than the presidentof Manila Central University,Dr. Aristotle T. Malabanan de-livered his own version of nos-talgic memories with Dr.Frank, way back when theywere still classmates duringtheir College of Optometrydays in Mayhaligue, Sta. Cruz,Manila and some fond memo-ries and experiences as old-timebuddies.

For her part, Dr. LydiaTaganguin, the university’sVice President for AcademicAffairs took notice of Dr.Frank’s contribution to the col-lege and the university, whichare products of his hard workand dedication to uplifting thecollege’s present rank as theCenter of Development in thefield of Optometry.

Two of Dr. Frank’s all-time “partners”, Dr. MarianoTanada, former Dean of Col-lege of Optometry of CentroEscolar University, and Dr.Fred Bacani, former Dean ofCollege of Optometry of Cen-tral Colleges of the Philippines, brought the house down withtheir antics in delivering theirdoting reminiscences of theirtime-tested and fool-prooffriendship, back when theywere still “inseparable partnersin crime”, so to speak.

In the video is one of Dr.Frank’s closest “allies” basedin the United States of America,Dr. Aris Manio, who delivereda send-off greeting to him, inanticipation of his forthcom-ing trip to USA to visit hisdaughter, whom he has notseen for quite some time.

MCU Medical Alumni ......................... continued from p.1

R. Landero who initially madeintroductions to many of thegraduates who are now activeand committed members of theMCU Medical Alumni Asso-ciation in America.

In the Midwest, Dr. NevaArribas, a loyal and former fac-ulty member and registrar ofthe College of Medicine, whomigrated to St. Louis, Mis-souri, brought and introducedthe MCU officials to the alumniheaded by Drs. D. Sulit and P.Velada in Chicago, Drs. Demyand Tessie Timban in Michi-gan, Drs. C. Antonio andRenato Judalena in Illinois andDr. H. Pineda in St. Louis, Mis-souri. A visit to Kentucky wasmade possible by Drs. Elmerand Filipinas Guerrero.Though the hard work, dedi-cation, generosity and sensi-tivity to the school concerns, these alumni were able to unitemany more alumni to join theorganization.

Their names may not beincluded here but certainlytheir participation and involve-ment have made the alumni or-ganization in America last tothis day. They have supportedthe needs of the College andHospital in terms of providingthe necessary financial sup-port for the development of thefaculty, students, curriculum, facilities, research, library andaudio visual room, communityprograms and most especiallythe clinical indigency pro-grams for the hospital and theadapted communities of thecollege in Bagong Barrio,Caloocan and Potrero andCatmon in Malabon.

In the late 80’s, some ofthe officers of the initial MCUMedical Alumni Associationestablished in the West Coast, namely Drs. U. Carbajal, D.

Timban, R. Landero, R. Judalena,R. Punzalan, Guinto and R.Cadano, met with the officers ofthe MCU Medical Alumni Foun-dation in North Eastern region.

Needless to say these con-tributions although unseen bythe naked eye, are the very lifeand reasons for existence of anyeducational institution.

The Association has initi-ated several fund-raisingprojects. It started a voluntary“Pledges” campaign, where themembers promise to make annualcontributions to the Associa-

tion. It also established a pro-gram called “Light Keepers”,conceived by Dr. RogelioRoncal, where members who do-nate certain amounts, areawarded citations and medals ofhonors – bronze, silver, and gold– are inducted to the “LightKeepers’ Hall of Fame.”

In 1997 during the 50th Foun-dation Day of the Alumni Foun-dation then headed by Dr. BenMalit, the Alumni contributed forthe complete renovation andprovision of the needed facilitiesof the Emergency Room and two(2) operating rooms.

Under the present leader-ship of Drs. R. Punzalan and R.Cadano a scholarship programwas offered to deserving stu-

dents and in the current firstyears enrollees, eight studentsqualified for the scholarship. These will be a continuing offeruntil graduation for studentswho would meet the academicrequirements.

Another big project of thepresent leadership is going to bepresented to the general mem-bership during the annual con-vention of the MCU MedicalAlumni Association to be heldin Las Vegas at the Monte CarloHotel from August 16 to August20, 2006. It is hoped that many

members will participate in theconvention. It is also hoped thatthe agreement on the big projectcan be made public during thenext issue of the PULSE.

To backtrack, the officersand membership of the AlumniAssociation and the AlumniFoundation agreed in the lateeighties to have just one alumniorganization the MCU MedicalAlumni Association in Americawith the MCU Medical AlumniFoundation as its funding armand currently, Dr. R. Punzalanand Dr. R. Cadano both fromSouthern California heads theAlumni Association and theAlumni Foundation, respec-tively.

The new Hospital Building

is now completely operationaland in its 6th floor are the chapeland the Dr. Ralph Hunter Semi-nar Hall, the latter built in thememory of Dr. Ralph Hunter a1962 graduate who bequeathedin his last will and testament, asubstantial amount which wasused for the creation of a semi-nar hall to be used for the con-tinuing medical education semi-nars of the hospital and collegestaff. This donation was ably fa-cilitated by Drs. Salvador andEmma Arella now both actively, involved in all the projects of theschool and hospital.

During the centennial cel-ebration of the MCU, Drs.Melchor and Norma Garcia do-nated and led the blessing of theDr. Leonardo Mendiola Hall, pri-marily used for lectures and semi-nars, in memory of Dr. LeonardoMendiola as Most OutstandingAnatomy professor. Dr. N.Arribas pledged and started theannual donation of an incentivegrant for Outstanding Faculty, inmemory of her parents, Dr. Per-fecto R. Arribas and Mrs.Prudencia P. Arribas.

This current academicschool year, 2006-2007, the of-fices of the Association from theSouthern California Chapter, Dr.Reynaldo Landero, Dr. RufinoCadano and Dr. RusticoBalderian had meetings with theadministrative officials and fac-ulty and gave inspirational mes-sages to the medical students.Such visits are certainly mostwelcome and morally uplifting. Please come and share your ex-periences with the academic staffand witness the fruits of the hardlabor of the whole communityand alumni.

MICHIGAN, USA –We were out having dinnerfor my son’s birthday inJanuary (2011) when I got acall from a fellow in Texaswho was excitedly blabber-ing about a planned get to-gether for MCU-FDTMFstudents. I was taken by sur-prise getting a phone callfrom somebody who seldomcalls but much more by theenergy he exhibited. It wasDr. Edgardo Montemayorcalling, asking if Jeni and Iwould be interested and ifJuly was a good time.

The timing of the callwas imperfect, I was aboutready to dig into my fresh-off-the-oven steak, the res-

taurant was pretty noisy(there was a band playing),my sons were sharing theirstories from school, and thefireplace was a good relieffrom the sub-zero Michigantemperature. On the phone, was an old friend trying tocatch up and selling me anexcellent idea. I was torn!

I ended up holding theline.

Monty apparently didtalk with Dr. Cesar Dayahanearlier, they caught up andreminisced their years spentat MCU Caloocan campusin the mid 80’s. Wonderedwhere their classmates andfriends ended up holding ajob. They came to realize,

there is more than a handfulfrom their batch that endedup in Northern America. They started calling aroundto find out these other class-mates have friends of friendshave in one way or anotherhas had the same roots likethem.

A phone tree was cre-ated, linking people whowere mentored and nurturedby the same internists, deans, surgeons, academi-cians, pediatricians, statisti-cians, etc. They talked aboutgood and bad, fun and sad, drunken and sober, perilousand delightful, mellow andharsh memories while tra-versing the hallways of the
