Formatting and Publishing

Large Print Editions Did you know you can publish a separate print book that is a large print edition? Shelley has done this with her book, “A Life of Gratitude.” Amazon will link your large print edition with the other editions of your book on their site to make it easy to find.

Although we have not had many sales of our large print books, one author told us that 50% of her sales are of the large print edition. It is another way to provide your book to your readers and potentially diversify your income.

How to Format a Large Print Edition of Your Book There are 5 steps to altering the formatting of your print book to create a large print edition. Note: an optional step would be to change the trim size of your book. You might want to consider changing to a larger trim size to keep your page count lower, but this is not necessary.

Step 1: Increase your font size To alter the formatting of your book from the regular print addition to the large print edition, you will want to increase your font to 16pt or larger. To do this, you have three options: Option 1: Choose the select all option from Microsoft Word’s Home screen. Then press the button to increase font size – this will enlarge all selected font. Note: Your font size will not show in the window when you have all your text selected. So check your body font beforehand, and well as how many stages you will need to increase your text by to reach 16pts. (i.e., if you have 12pt font in your book, you will want to press the increase font size button twice.)

Option 2: You can select just your body text in each chapter (and front and back matter) and increase the font in each section manually. This option will leave all of your headers and footers the same size as they were originally, so you may need to verify that they are at least 16pts or larger as well. Option 3: If you do not have a lot of formatting in your document, or if you know it is all tagged with the appropriate styles, you can update your styles instead of your text. To do this, right click on the style you want to update, then choose the modify option (see next page)

Then choose the font size you want to update it to. For the normal body text, you will want to choose 16pts, and for the headings you will want to choose something larger than that. Important Note If you included headers and footers, you will want to make sure you increase the font in these as well.

Step 2: Update your copyright page On your book’s copyright page, you will want to add “Large Print Edition” and the new ISBN.

Step 3: Check your spacing Next, you will want to go through your entire book from start to finish and check the spacing. Watch to make sure none of your pages start with a return or have any information split over to the next page that needs to be together (bulleted lists, quotes, etc.). You may need to add an extra return before the content at the bottom of a page, or delete one from the top of a page. Also, you generally don’t want any headings at the bottom of a page with no content. So if you have a non-fiction section heading, or in fiction if you have a date, setting change, etc. that is noted, you will not want those to be the last thing on the bottom of a page. While you are checking this, if you had all of your books chapters starting on front facing pages, you will want to ensure that they are still facing the correct way.

Step 4: Update your table of contents The final step to formatting your large print edition is to update your table of contents. To do this, right click on your table of contents and select the option to “updated field” and then “update page numbers only.”

Step 5: Update your book cover Once you have finalized your interior files, you will need to update your print book cover with the new spine width and trim size if you changed it. You might also want to update your cover to say “Large Print Edition,” but it’s not necessary Once you have finalized your interior and cover files, you are ready to publish your large print edition.

How to Publish a Large Print Edition You will need to publish your large print edition as a new book or project under a separate ISBN as the original print book. When going through the publishing process, you will need to indicate it as a large print edition. Here are the screen shots on how to do that on CreateSpace: Step 1: Select the Description option under Distribute

Step 2: Select Large Print

You will also want to update the books written description to indicate that it is large print. Upload your new cover files and click publish!

Conclusion Formatting and publishing a large print edition of your book is as easy as a few simple steps and if you have followed the steps in this report, you should have a published large print edition. Congratulations! Amazon has an entire separate section for just large print books that you can see here: www.amazon.com/Large-Print-Books/b?ie=UTF8&node=300950 Be sure to market your new edition and contact Amazon through your author central dashboard after a week or two if it isn’t automatically linked to your other editions. To your success,
