The Bushkill Stream Conservancy is currently working on a project titled

“Bushkill Creek Restoration and Habitat Enhancement.” This project will enhance more than 6,500 linear feet of stream habitat as it flows through public land owned by Tatamy Borough, Palmer Township, and Lafayette College and bordered by Forks Township.

The Palmer Township Bike Path runs along the stream through these parks, bringing local communities to this area. However, improvements to the stream will be necessary to allow residents to take full advantage of the natural resources on these properties. Bushkill Creek is well-buffered as it flows through these parks, but it lacks the structural makeup needed for fish habitat and spawning grounds. This stream reach is mostly flat and featureless, lacking the riffles and pools that harbor fish and other aquatic organisms. As a result, the fishing and wildlife viewing opportunities here are reduced, effectively diminishing the value of these public parks.

Bushkill Stream Conservancy is seeking grant funding to restore and enhance this section of Bushkill Creek through the creation of fish habitat and, thus,

outdoor recreation opportunities. To complete this project, in stream structures will be installed at planned locations to improve stream flow and create suitable habitat conditions for native fish and macroinvertebrates. The proposed stream corridor restoration will improve this High Quality-Coldwater Fishery as it flows through Forks Township, Palmer Township, and Tatamy Borough, all while providing and enhancing opportunities for local communities to connect with well-managed natural resources.

We encourage anyone who would like to know more about this project or anything else about the Bushkill Stream Conservancy to attend our meetings held the third Tuesday of the month at the Tatamy Municipal Building, 423 Broad Street, Tatamy, PA at 7:00 P.M. or send us an email at HYPERLINK “mailto:[email protected][email protected].

FORKS TOWNSHIP HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Over 120 years ago in 1894 a substantial resort hotel was constructed on the eastern ridge of Weygadt Mountain, now known as Paxinosa. Predating the building of that significant

structure was an interesting series of events wherein prominent Easton attorney David Nevin had constructed an electric powered street car line in 1888 from the foot of Easton’s College Avenue to Meixell’s Corner east of Lafayette Street. This being only the 3rd electric powered line in the country at the time.

Subsequently with the financial assistance of his uncle Major Nevin, a tract land was acquired that included an area on the Weygadt Mountain ridge in Forks Township. Nevin formed a group with the idea in mind to construct a resort hotel, potentially attracting guests from Philadelphia, the New York area and other locations. Planning advanced and by 1894 the Paxinosa Inn was open for guests. In addition to comfortable guest rooms, there was a pavilion for dining, dancing and entertainment.

From the Inn’s large covered porches, vistas south of the Inn looked over the Delaware River, where the Lehigh flows into the Delaware and well into New Jersey. When facing north, acres of prime farm land, a scattering of towns and farm villages with the Blue Mountain as a back drop interrupted by three indentions, Delaware Water Gap, Wind Gap and Lehigh Gap. Pleasant breezes offered a cooling effect in pleasant weather. Landscaped grounds with walking paths to adjacent a wooded area east of the Inn provided outdoor recreation for the guests.

Transportation to the area was either by stagecoach via is a carriage road from Sullivan Trail or the trolley line which was extended from Meixell’s Corner on the southern side of the mountain via a winding route to the south side of the Inn. Also, with a great deal of displeasure from the residents on Millionaires Row (North 3rd Street) the trolley line was extended to the Easton Circle with further connections to Easton Transit. This provided trolley connections from Philadelphia via Willow Grove and Doylestown to Easton plus passenger rail service from the Jersey Central, Lehigh Valley and Pennsylvania Railroads at Easton and Phillipsburg .

All went well until a disastrous fire in 1905 leveled the structure. Optimistically an even greater Fireproot Inn was rebuilt and severed well into the 1920’s. The automobile became the vehicle of choice offering greater travel opportunities and within a few years Paxinosa Inn closed. Sadly again the vacant “Fireproof” Inn burned down in February 1931.

The site although privately owned can be seen from Paxinosa Drive in Forks or accessed from Easton’s Pennsylvania Avenue via a winding uphill road, the last stages of which were the actual trolley line gradient.

THE FORKS HISTORICAL SOCIETY MEETS ON 4TH MONDAY EVENING MONTHLY EXCEPT DECEMBER. HISTORICAL PROGRAMS OF LOCAL AND REGIONAL INTERESTS ARE PRESENTED.

Bulk Collections: Each residence can put out two (2) bulk items on their regularly

scheduled collection day during these weeks. Bulk items include items too large to fit into the waste cart and are further defined as items having the approximate size and weight of a standard size sofa that can be carried by two (2) men. Examples include furniture, mattresses, rolled up and tied rugs no larger than 3’x6’. Unacceptable materials that will

not be collected include construction materials, hazardous waste, electronics, tires, yard waste, grass clippings or additional household trash.

Can’t wait for the next quarterly collection? Stop by the township offices and purchase a tag for $20 each. Affix the tag to your bulk item and put it out curbside on your next collection day. No limit on the number of items you can have collected in this manner, but if it’s more than two (2), you will need to contact County Waste at 1-800-832-1332 so they can plan accordingly.

Yard Waste Collections: Yard waste is no longer allowed in landfills in the State of Pennsylvania.

There will be (2) yard waste collections: one in the spring and one in the fall each year and these materials will be composted. Unlimited

amounts of yard waste (leaves, branches, twigs, flowers, roots, bushes, garden clippings) will be collected curbside.

Place your materials curbside as follows: • Any clean, open-top containers (use your former cylindrical, yellow recycling container,

but NOT YOUR AUTOMATED CART) • Compostable brown paper bags available at certain grocery stores or online. • Tie with cotton or hemp twine in bundles no larger than 3’x3’x3’, and weighing no more than 40 lbs. • NO PLASTIC BAGS, OR PLASTIC OR SYNTHETIC ROPE, OR TWINE • NO grass clippings, tree stumps, loose soils, sod, any wood or tree limbs over four (4) inches in diameter; human or animal

excrement; noxious weeds or soil contaminated with hazardous substances.

White Good Collections:Appliances such as air conditioners, refrigerators and freezers (remove doors; no need to remove Freon),

washers, dryers, hot water heaters, dehumidifiers, bicycles, and lawnmowers (oil and gas removed), BBQ grills (gas and/or charcoal removed), and various other household metal items.

FORKS TOWNSHIP RECYCLING CENTER

When It Rains, It DrainsStorm water is water from precipitation that flows across the ground and pavement when it rains or when snow and ice melt. The water

seeps into the ground or drains into storm sewers. Storm sewers are what you see at street corners or at low points on the sides of the streets. Collectively, the draining water is called storm water runoff.

Stormwater PollutantsStorm water becomes a problem when it picks up debris, chemicals, dirt or other pollutants as it flows or when it causes flooding and

erosion of stream banks. Storm water eventually flows into a stream, river or wetland. All of the pollutants storm water carries along the way empty into these waters because storm water does not get treated. • Pet waste left on the ground can get carried away by storm water contributing harmful bacteria into our water. • Vehicles that drip fluid (oil, antifreeze, gasoline) onto paved areas where storm water drains is also carried into our water. • Chemicals used to grow and maintain lawns can run off into the storm drain when it rains or when we water our lawns. • Waste from chemicals used in construction can wash into the storm drain system.

Storm Runoff IssuesRain is an important part of nature’s water cycle, but there are times it can do more damage than good. Problems related to storm water

runoff can include: • Flooding caused by too much storm water flowing over paved surfaces. • Increased spending to maintain storm drains and storm sewer systems that are clogged with excessive amounts of debris and dirt.

Prevent Storm Water PollutionThe following are some important ways you can help prevent storm water pollution:

• Properly dispose of hazardous substances such as used oil, cleaning supplies and paint. Never pour them down any part of the storm sewer system.

• Use pesticides, fertilizers and herbicides properly and efficiently to prevent excess runoff. • Look for signs of soil and other pollutants, such as debris and chemicals leaving construction sites or tracked onto roadways by

construction vehicles. Please report poorly managed construction sites to the Director of Public Works at 610-438-2670. • Install innovative storm water practices on residential property such as rain barrels or rain gardens that capture storm water and

keep it on site instead of letting it drain away into the storm sewer system. • Report any discharges from storm water outfalls during dry weather, a sign that there could be a problem with the storm sewer

system. • Pick up after pets and dispose of their waste properly. • Store materials that could pollute storm water indoors and use containers for outdoor storage that do not rust or leak to eliminate

exposure of materials to storm water.

GRASSCYCLINGGRASSCYCLE: Leave grass clippings on the lawn after mowing. This reduces

the time, costs, and labor of bagging cut grass and returns valuable nutrients to the soil. Grass clippings decompose quickly, so they do not contribute to thatch.

CONTROL GROWTH RATE: Reduce yard waste and have a healthier lawn by using the methods listed below.

The MethodsMOWING PRACTICES: Mow weekly or bi-weekly during peak growing season. Remove no more than one-third of the leaf

tissue with a sharp blade to allow clippings to break down rapidly. Although standard mowers do a fine job, mulching mowers chop grass into finer pieces for quicker breakdown. Some lawn mower manufacturers also offer “mulching kits” for standard mowers. When turf is overgrown (such as during rainy periods), large clumps of grass may form after mowing. These clumps can be removed and composted, used as mulch, or spread out on the lawn by remowing.

FERTILIZING: Grasscycling reduces the need for chemical fertilizers. Too much fertilizer can weaken the lawn by causing a shallow root system to develop. When using fertilizers, apply small amounts only two or three times during the growing season (mid to late May and early to mid-September are best in this region).

WATERING: Water just enough to wet the root system. Too much water damages roots and may cause disease. Frequent but light watering may weaken the lawn by causing a shallow root system to develop.

PA Act 101 requires residents to recycle the following materials: • CANS: Aluminum, tin, steel, bimetallic and aerosol cans; formed aluminum containers

(such as pie pans). Rinse. No toxic or flammable materials. No paint cans. • GLASS: Clear, green, and brown food and beverage jars and bottles. Remove lids. No

drinking glasses, window panes, light bulbs, mirrors, ceramic, china, or porcelain. • PLASTIC: Plastic bottles and containers (labeled with numbers #1-7 on the bottom) and

includes soda, water, milk, juice, liquor, shampoo, detergent, condiments, salad dressing, yogurt, margarine, etc. Please rinse and crush. Remove caps. No Styrofoam, plastic bags of any kind, shipping or packing plastic, or rigid plastics.

• MIXED PAPER: office paper, phone books, junk mail, newsprint, magazines, corrugated cardboard, and food boxes such as cereal boxes, and gift boxes. Cut and flatten as needed.

No plastic bags or food, please. Only these items are recyclable in our current recycling program. When in doubt, throw it out!
