formed more than 9,000 spay/neuter surgeries and provided services to over 16,000 dogs and cats in 2008. Since 2004, KCAAP has performed more than 20,000 spay/neuter sur- geries. Bonnie Hill also said that the Crandall facility opening in February will be used as a training facility for organizations throughout the country that are considering opening simi- lar clinics. Pet overpopulation, besides being a humane issue, is also a public health issue, particularly here in Texas, which has been on a statewide rabies quarantine for the last 6 years. KCAAP board member Doug Hill said, "More pets that are vaccinated against rabies, plus fewer strays due to spay/neuter surgeries, equals a safer community for everyone, regardless of whether you own a pet or not." KCAAP has a pet transport program, picking up about 60% of their cli- ents from up to 120 miles away. Through grants like Texas Animal Friendly Fund, KCAAP provides financial assistance to those who cannot afford the already low-cost spay/neuter services. Ms. Hill added that the organization is still about $80,000 short of their 2009 operating budget. Kaufman County Animal Awareness is a non-profit 501(c) 3 charity organization, not affiliated with any local county, state or governmental agency, currently located at the corner of US highway 175 and FM 148 in Crandall. To schedule spay/neuter surgery surgery for your dog or cat, arrange for shuttle service, make a tax- deductible donation, or to volunteer your time, call 972-472-3500 or visit www.spayneuternet.org. In February, the Kaufman County Animal Awareness Project (KCAAP), the high-volume, high-quality, low-cost spay/neuter clinic for dogs and cats is opening their new 5400 square foot state-of-the-art building located at 102 E. Trunk in Crandall. This new spay/neuter and wellness clinic will allow KCAAP to expand its role as a provider of these pet services in a thirteen county region in Northeast Texas. The new clinic will be staffed with veterinarians and equipped as a full-service spay/neuter clinic, allowing area residents to receive low-cost yet high-quality care for their dog or cat sterilization, with a potential for 17,000 surgeries per year. This will drastically reduce the rate of pet overpopulation and the number of unwanted animals entering shelters, keeping people and their pets together. KCAAP President and founder of the charity, Bonnie Hill, said about the new facility, "I'd like to thank all of the funders, including PetsMart Chari- ties and the Meadows Foundation, plus all the individuals, who have made this modern, spacious new building possible. And we can't sufficiently thank Kaufman County Commissioner Ray Clark, our building contractor, for the countless hours of his personal time spent on a non-paid volunteer basis. These donations of money and time will prevent hundreds of thousands of dogs and cats from being euthanized or worse, due to pet overpopulation here in Northeast Texas." Rayleigh Bennett of Crandall found wishes do come true. Rayleigh was granted a wish from the Make a Wish Foundation of North Texas. Shown above is Mrs. Cindy Farmer's class sporting t-shirts that they made in celebration of Martin Luther King Day. In staying with the theme of Dr. King's historical message, students were asked to choose a career dream, draw a picture on the front of their shirt and to include three goals that had to be obtained in order to achieve their dream. The kids were very excited to share in their dreams and to be a part of such a special project celebrating a valued turning-point in American history. It was apparent they spent a considerable amount of time, thought and effort in the development of their projects. Just think, through these and other children's dreams will come the carving of America's future.

To many white-tailed deer hunters, January brings sadness and remorse. After all of the anticipation and preparation, another deer season seems to have come and gone like the wind. Forever engrained in each of our minds are the memories and moments of each minute shared in the woods. Don't waste too much time reflecting on your every move - the hunt ain't over!

In most regions of Texas the white-tailed deer season has officially closed. Some counties with higher populations of deer have incorporated extended spike and doe seasons to assist in the balancing of the herds. For those of us that are less fortunate it is a time to reflect on the moments shared with friends and family. Be careful and don't spend too much time reflecting!

As many may know deer shed their antlers each year. This typically takes place towards the end of January with early February being the prime time for antlers to hit the ground. February is the time to hit the trails. When shed hunting focus on feeding areas and worn out trails. The hunt can result in rewards that will only make the anticipation for the next season more enjoyable, or should I say nerve racking.

For the more experienced hunter, this time will be beneficial in more ways than one. First and foremost, it is an opportunity to take your family to the woods. Second, it is a time to locate some of those hidden travel routes and bedding areas. Third, you may even sneak up on a wild pig or two. You never know when the head gear of a majestic whitetail is looming in the falling leaves. Finding shed antlers can be a fun and rewarding experience for the entire family.

Kaufman County Junior Livestock Show Bar-B-Que Cook-Off sched-uled for March 14, 2009, is currently looking for judges for the following categories: Beans, Chicken, Ribs, and Brisket. For more information contact Jackie Robertson at (972) 932-9069 or email: [email protected].

The Crandall Athletic Booster Club Board of Directors would like to express our sincere gratitude to the MANY Pirate fans who volunteered their time this past football season to work tireless-ly where needed at home games. Your dedication and support is the reason the booster club is able to support all our Crandall Athletes. Thanks so much!

At the midpoint of the season, congratulations to all of the girl's basketball teams on such an outstanding season! If everyone on the teams can stay focused and avoid injuries, the sky is the limit for what we could accomplish this year in girl's basketball! How about 7 District Championships! This goal is very obtainable. All the girl's teams could conceivably win "champ" or "co-champ" at every level in Crandall Basketball. What an accomplishment this would be! It's very rewarding to see all of the hard work paying off for everyone. As the old saying goes "time flies when you're having fun" and as hard as it is to believe-- the season will be over with in just a few more weeks. With that being said, everyone is encouraged to go out and enjoy playing each and every time you have the opportunity to play. Let's have a great finish and make it happen!

Happy belated New Year. I just love new beginnings. Don't you? There is just something special about a new beginning. New day; new friend; new car; new experience; a fresh coat of paint. Well, maybe not a fresh coat of paint. Most "new's" are great, but there may be a down side to some. I have been typing my article and had the power go off. I have been within a sentence of completion and have to start all over. And then there is this "paint" thing. Let me see if I can explain.

I don't know about you, but I hate to paint. It takes as long to get ready to paint as it does to actually paint. And then when you finish painting, there is the clean up. The clean up is the worst because even though I put down drop cloths, tape off areas to remain unpainted and cover everything else, I get paint on everything. I drop it on the drop cloth, step in it and track it all over the house before I realize what I have done. The tape never keeps the paint completely off of the areas I don't want painted. It always bleeds through and has to be cleaned up. It is really a pain for me to paint. Normally, folks know if I have been painting because I wear it for days after the job. It is on my face, in my ears, all over my hands. It doesn't matter how hard I scrub, I miss several places and it just has to wear off. Let's suffice it to say, I avoid painting for as long as I possibly can.

I say all of that to say this: My dear wife decided we (in this case "we" is spelled, J-o-h-n) needed to paint the kitchen. I acted like I didn't hear her. I even tried to hide, but she finally found me and off to Walmart we went to purchase paint.

Terrie had this picture in her mind that a "yellow" kitchen would be beauti-ful. Normally, I would agree, but since I was still in denial about painting, I was severely dragging my feet. However, we chose a bright yellow for the kitchen. The key word here is "bright".

When we got home, I started "preparing" the kitchen, as well as myself, for painting. I took down wall hangings, masked off areas with tape, put down drop cloths and moved furniture, UGH! Then I painted and I painted and I painted. I thought I would never finish, but I finally did and put everything back on the walls and in its place. I walked out of the kitchen and turned off the light. It was only then that I noticed the kitchen still glowed. We didn't just have "bright" yellow--we had "screaming" yellow. It made little difference if the light was on or off in the kitchen, it was still bright. →→→→

I usually try to make a paint job last several years because I hate to paint. Well, we lived with that new paint job for a day and a half. Then it was back to Walmart to purchase a different "bright" yellow to hopefully cover the "glowing" yellow we already had. You know the drill: remove, tape, cover, move, paint, uncover, clean and etc. In just three days, I painted our kitchen twice and yes,, I hate to paint.

Somewhere along the way a verse of scripture came to me. It is found in Psalm 118:24 and is says, "This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it." Rather than complaining about painting, I should have been excited that I was even capable of painting. After all, God gave me a day to paint and then an new day to paint; a great new beginning.

Gardens have been planted to demonstrate bog gardening, as well as butterfly, cactus, native grasses, rain gardening, shrubs and Texas natives. A covered pavilion provides an area for educational classes. Ad-ditional gardens will be added in 2009. Hope everyone had a great holiday season. Well we are already into 2009! I know we can make 2009 even better than 2008. You have probably noticed, or will notice, that the speed limit signs are going up all over the city. We still have a few heavy-footed people out there. The signs are there for a reason - to regulate safety in the city. Please be courteous. I would again like to thank the Combine citizens and the Neighborhood Watch volunteers for all their help. As a result of the intensified watch groups and their awareness, we have been receiving more suspicious person/vehicle calls. Most of them check out o.k., but we have made some good arrests due to these calls. It also lets the criminal element know that we, as a whole, are watching them and will report them.

Food for thought: City Ordinance 182 forbids discharging a fire arm in the city limits. This ordinance is available for review on the city web site. Go to http://combinetx.com/ for more information.

The next Neighborhood Watch meeting is February 5, 2009 at City Hall @ 7:00 p.m. Please help make Combine a safe and peaceful place to live. If you have any questions for the Chief or would like to make comments or suggestions, please feel free to call or e-mail me at [email protected]. Have great February.

From the Crandall Police Chief

The Crandall Police Department wrapped up a busy 2008, with a 30% increase in demand for police services. The most significant factor was the increase in traffic in and around Crandall, which equated to a 100% increase in automobile accidents in the city. The Crandall Police Department increased traffic enforcement in an effort to address unsafe driving habits that factor into automobile accidents, which reflected an increase in the number of traffic citations issued during the year.

With the new year, brings new responsibilities for the Crandall Police Depart-ment. With the budget adjustments that were made this year, Code Enforcement duties have been placed on the police officers. Officers have begun their initial inspections of the city, addressing violations with letters of notification for viola-tions of City Ordinances. Code Enforcement addresses the following:

• Illegally parked vehicles - both on private and public properties. City ordinances prohibit parking in yards and require all parking to be on an improved surface.• High grass and weeds, which promote rodent infestation and fire hazard (especially during dry seasons).• Trash and debris.• Securing and abating abandoned buildings which pose a health hazard and a place to harbor transients or vagrants.• Please do your part to keep Crandall clean as the community makes a progressive move toward a better future. If you have questions concerning Code Enforcement please call the Crandall

Police Department at 972-427-3767.

Telephone Awareness IssuesCell & Land Line

Shown to be valid information on Snopes.com

A land line telephone patron recently received a telephone call from an indi-vidual identifying himself as an AT&T Service Technician who was conducting a test on the telephone lines. He stated that to complete the test, the user should touch nine (9), zero(0), the pound sign (#), and then hang up. Luckily, the person called was suspicious and refused.

Upon contacting the telephone company, they were informed that by pushing 90#, you give the requesting individual full access to your telephone line, which enables them to place long distance calls billed to your home phone number. The user was informed that this scam has been originating from many local jails/prisons. Be alert. Do not fall prey to this scam.

Remember that cell phone numbers go public next month. All cell phone num-bers are being released to telemarketing companies and you will start to receive sales calls. You will be charged for these incoming calls. To prevent this, call the following number from your cell phone - 888-382-1222. It is the National DO NOT CALL list. It will only take a minute of your time and it blocks your number for five (5) years.

You must call from the cell phone number you want to have blocked. You cannot call from a different phone num-ber. Help others by passing this informa-tion along to your family and friends. It takes about 20 seconds to get registered on the list and can ease the headache of taking unwanted sales calls and being charged for calls coming from these unwanted sources.

Happy Valentine's Day

New CISD Baseball Complexnears completion

While driving past the High School on FM 3039, you might have recently noticed new ball field lights topping the nearby timbers. The eagerly anticipated Pirate Fields are scheduled to open the first week of February 2009. After years of practicing and playing on outdated fields, it will be a joy to see our Pirate teams playing their 2009 baseball season on the field in the new complex. It will also be nice to host guest teams in the new setting.

Crandall residents, coaches, and athletes alike, are all proud of the ball fields that make an impressive addition to the Crandall Independent School District. The newly constructed Pirate Fields truly give the entire district a feeling of pride and gratitude. It sends a message to our citizens that our school tax dollars are being well spent. Thanks to all who have worked so hard to get this complex completed in time for this year's baseball season.

Canine Cognitive Dysfunction (CDS) is the age-related deterioration of cog-nitive abilities (normal body functioning that is conditioned or remembered) characterized by behavioral changes in dogs that cannot be attributed to general medical conditions such as brain tumors, infection, or organ failure. Recent stud-ies show 48% of dogs 8 years of age and older exhibit at least one clinical sign of this condition.

CDS is not "normal aging." It is related to several pathological changes that may occur in the brain. The progressive, degenerative course of CDS involves a gradual decline of functions that are normally "remembered" sufficient to produce functional disability in the home and/or as a family member.

DIAGNOSIS: Recognition of the clinical signs by the owner is usually the first step in diagnosis. Next, the veterinarian must do a comprehensive physical exam and the appropriate laboratory testing to identify medical conditions that may be contributing to the clinical signs.

SIGNS OF CDS: Disorientation, wanders aimlessly, gets "stuck" in corners or behind furniture, stares into space or at walls, has difficulty finding the door, does not recognize familiar people, does not respond to verbal cues or name, ap-pears to forget reason for going outdoors. Abnormal Sleep/wake patterns: Sleeps more in a 24-hour day and or sleeps less during the night, decrease in activity, or an increase in wandering or pacing. Loss of house training: Urinates/defecates indoors, and or signals less to go outside. Decreased or altered response to family members: Solicits less attention, no longer stands for petting (walks away), less enthusiastic greeting or no longer greets owners.

Treatment medications are available to help treat pets dealing with cognitive dysfunctions. Consult with your pet's veterinarian to discuss treatment option.

Remember, just as we, as humans, reap the benefits of advancing medical tech-nology and treatment, so do our pets and companion animals through the rapid expansion and advancement of veterinary medicine.
