It would be difficult to pinpointwhere the organic farm to table food

trend actually began, but it’s safe to saythat its roots are firmly planted inSanta Monica.

No other place in town is that moreevident than at the Santa MonicaFarmer’s markets, where the freshestand most delicious in local vegetablesand fruits are made available to us directly from the farmers who grow them.

The Santa Monica farmer’s marketshave become famous, in part, becauseof the celebrity chefs who shop there ona regular basis for the finest in localingredients. From Wolfgang Puck toTom Colicchio to local chefs likeMichael McCarty of Michael’srestaurant and Josiah Citrin of Melisse, the market’s produce has become amainstay in the kitchens of the verybest restaurants Santa Monica and all of Los Angeles.

September is a transitional season

for foodies. Summer’s bounty iswinding down with warm-weatherfavorites like corn, eggplant and greenbeans on their way out and thetraditional fall crops just barelypeaking through at local Farmers’ markets.

Local markets are currentlyfeaturing the first round of fallproducts but there are a few items thatare delayed, either by droughtconditions or the lack of a cold snap.

Apples, quince and pomegranatesare already at local markets or will bevery soon. Apples are as varied as thepeople shopping for them so customersshould experiment beyond thetraditional Granny Smiths to find avariety that fits their needs. Some aremore tart, some more floral; somecook well while others are kid sized forlunches. Ask the local farmers foradvice if you have questions.

Pomegranates are a mystery formany, but with a few shopping tips;they are a fantastic fall fruit.

Ripe pomegranates should havedeep, ruby red to purple seeds.

White or pinkish seeds won’t be assweet or as flavorful. To open apomegranate, score the fruit from topto bottom with a knife, cutting justdeep enough to penetrate the outerskin. Use your knife to pry open thefruit, you’ll hear a tearing sound as itopens. To remove the seeds, submergethe opened fruit in a bowl of water andgently peel away the seeds using yourfingers, ripe seeds will sink and anyexcess pith will float. Submerging thefruit will also prevent accidental spraysof potential staining juice.

In the savory category, shelling

beans, sweet potatoes and wintersquash are all fall favorites.

Winter squash take many forms andnames but they are incredibly versatilein the kitchen. Mash them to make areplacement for potatoes, puree themsmooth to make a soup, roasted cubesas a hearty side dish or use fine shredsin coleslaw.

When shopping at the market, takea few minutes to ask the farmers whatthey have coming into season next anddon’t be afraid to experiment. Seasonalproduce is delicious and among thebest features of living in Santa Monica.
