At the heart of a healthy lifestyle ishealthy eating.

Fortunately, Santa Monica is hometo some of the country’s most heraldedfarmers’ markets. It’s common to seefamous chefs perusing the boothslooking for inspiration to create theirseasonal menus. You will also seefamilies that have come from all overL.A. picking over the fresh citrus ortasting some of the season’s finestofferings. Our city has become a meccafor organic produce and it owes much ofthat distinction to its open-air markets.

Conveniently located and scheduled, there are four different markets tochoose from with each having a bit ofits own character.

The Downtown markets havebecome a main source for many ofL.A.’s finest restaurants who haveembraced the farm-to-table ethic thatlead the current trends in dining. Chefs and regular patrons alike willbump elbows at the Wednesday market that crisscrosses the Third Street Promenade.

The Saturday Downtown market is the better attended of the two with families making up most of the patrons.

Across town, the Main Street markethas recently added a crafts bazaarfeaturing everything from clothing and jewelry to arts and crafts.

The Pico Boulevard market, locatedin Virginia Avenue Park, is best knownfor its special events. On any givenSaturday it may be hosting a popularchile roast or one of its well-attendedgardening work shops.

Santa Monica’s farmers’ marketswere made possible in 1978 when the state government created a law that allowed California’s farmers to sell their own produce directly to the public.

Shortly after, the City of Santa Monicaopened its first market on July 11, 1981in Downtown. Reports from the timesay that it was an immediate successand helped lay the groundwork forturning the city into a center of healthy living.

In the years following, the othermarkets were created to give more ofthe city access to the farm-directproduce that has become theirhallmark.

Remember to break out yourreusable shopping bags when hittingthe markets. I hope to see you there.
