NipomoArchitectsisanarchitecturefirmde-signedtobringinanoptimalamountofnaturallighttotheworkspacewhiletakingadvantageoftheuniquepanoramicviewprovidedbythesite.Peopleworkinginthisspacecanenjoythefeelingofbeingoutsidewhilebeingprotectedfromtheelements. Thearchitecturestepsdownwardwiththelandscape.Theviewsaretreatedasatheatrewithshiftingvantagepoints.Naturallightrunsdowntheconcretestructurethroughclerestorywindowseamsthatjointhewallandceiling.Lightsarenotneededduringthedaytimeasthenaturallightisreflectedoffthewallandintotheworkspace.Thefirmisisolatedfromanycontextofthecityandhasainherentserenitytoitself. Thestructurereliesprimarilyonlargecast-in-placeconcreteshearwalls.Theclerestorylightflowsdowntheverticalboardformworkwalls,emphasizingthewall’sroughtexture.Pinegirdersrunthroughtheconcretetoformtheceilingandsecondarystructuralsystem. Theentranceislocatedapproximately200feetfromtheparkinglot,andthereforemustbeap-proachedbyfoot.Becausethetwotallestwallsofthebuildingarefacingtheentrance,therestofthefirmisnotvisibleuntiloneinhabitsit.Thiscreatesacertainlevelprivacyforemployeeswhilesimultaneouslyprovokingacertainlevelofcuriosityinnon-employeeswhoarenotvisitingthefirmregularly. Acknowledgingthecultureofdesigners,NipomoArchitectsisnotjustahealthyworkingspace,butahealthylivingspace.Thefirmisdividedintotwozones:theproductionzoneandtheleisurezone.Inbetweenthesezonesisalargebreakofoutdoorspace.Whilearchitectsdonotalwayshavea9-5routine,it’simportanttoconsiderthequalityofspaceforthesakeofcomfortandenjoyment.

Asthethemeofthe2010WorldExpowas“BetterCity-BetterLife,”thethemeoftheproposedU.S.Pavilionwasnodifferent.Inrecentyears,archi-tectureintheUnitedStateshasundergonearenais-sance.WhilemuchoftheworldstillseestheUnitedStatesasanationofconsumers,excess,andobesity,theparadigmforarchitectureintheUnitedStatesandtheworldissustainability.The2010WorldExpoisachancefortheUnitedStatestochangetheirworldimageandrevealtoothercountriesthatitisgloballymindedandaleaderinsustainablepractice. InordertokeepthefootprintoftheU.S.PaviliontoaminimumitsitsmostlyonrecycledI-beamsandsteelbracing.BecauseShanghaihasrelativelyhotsummers,eachdisplayspacehasashadedcoolingpondunderneathit.Thisactsasanaturalevaporativecoolingsystemandisactivatedwhenwindblowsoverthepondsandthroughthesite. Thestructureofthedisplayspacesismadeupofsteelspaceframescladwithconcretepanels.Behindthecoloredpolycarbonateisanoperablewindowsystemthatallowseachdisplayspacetobepassivelycooled.Whileduringthedaythepolycar-bonateservesasadoubleskinsystemtominimizeheatgain,thepolycarbonateglowsatnight.ThisisoneoftheprimaryiconicfeaturesoftheU.S.PavilionandisachievedthroughanLEDsystemoflightsinstalledintoeachcellofthepolycarbonate. ThecubesaredesignateddisplayspacesthathighlightimportantpiecesofAmericanculture.AmongthemaretheJazzDisplay,theAmericanAuthorsDisplay,theAmericanScientistsDisplay,theAmericanArtDisplay,TheAmericanArchitectureDis-play,andtheSustainableMethodsDisplay.Eachcolorpertainstoadifferentdisplayroom.Visitorsenterthelobbywheretheycanfindthecafeandtheverticalcirculationtothedisplayspaces.

Overthelastdecade,AvilaBeachhasreclaimeditselfasoneofCalifornia’spremierbeachesafternearlyloosingit’sserenitytoanoilleakinthe1980’s.Stillunderdevelopedandlackingcivicidentity,AvilaBeachhasacquiredanewsenseofbeautythatisstilldevelopingandunknownbymany.TheproposedMaritimeMuseumwouldhelprevivethecitywithpeopleandgiveAvilaBeachalastingcivicidentity. ThesiteforthenewMaritimeMuseumislocatedinAvilaBeach,California,ontheUnocalPier3,000feetoffthecoast.ThepurposeofthemuseumistoincreaseawarenessofthemaritimehistoryoftheCentralCoastandAvilabeach.Alongwiththemu-seumisaboatbuildingschool,andaportforvisitingships. Themuseummimicstheaestheticofasailboat.Theheartofthedesignliesintheexperienceoftheporthole.BecauseSanLuisObispoBayissuchapopularspotforsailboats,thelargewhitemasonrywallsofthemuseumappearfromtheshoretobesails.Inadditiontoblendinginwithsailboats,thewhitema-sonrywallsactastheprimarystructureofthemuseumwhilesimultaneouslydeflectingoffshorewinds. TheMaritimeMuseumalsoexplorestheideaoftheportholebyopeningviewsthatconstantlychangeandinteractwiththevisitor.Themuseumissensitiveinthewayitbringsinnaturallight.Guestsareencouragedtousetheflowofnaturallightasaguidethroughthegalleries.Onthenorthandsouthfacingsidesofthemuseum,thestairwellopensuptotheocean,lettingthevisitorascendtothehorizon.Theglasselevatorhangsovertheseagivingthevisitornorelativitybuthimselfandtheocean.

[ STANLEY THEATRE ]
ThegoalofStanleyTheatreistobuildatheatreinthecontextofOldTownAlexandriausingmoviestillsandaestheticfromthefilmsofStanleyKubrick.Asatotaldesigner,Kubrickoftenhadcontrolofeveryaspectofhisfilms,includingtheset.ManyofKubrick’sscenestakeplaceinfrontofscenerythatsug-gestsastrongvanishingpoint,likehallways,andplaceswithobvioussymmetryandhorizontallines.Withthisinmind,thetheatre’scirculationdependsonlongviewtubesthatstretchfromtheentrancetotheoutdoortheatreonthePotomac. Thetheatrereliesonreinforcedbrickshearwallstosupporttheconcretethatfitsbetweenthem.Therearetwotheatres:theindoortheaterwhichisvisiblefromthestreet,andtheoutdoortheatrewhichissuspendedoverthePotomac.Whentherearenomoviesbeingshown,thespaceisaccessibleasapublicdeckthatmeetsthewater. FilmsinsideStanleyTheatrearenotviewedonascreen,theyaredisplayedontherawstructuralconcreteofthetheatre.Stripsofelongatedhorizontalacousticpanelsenhancetheperformanceofthemovieaswellascontributetodrawingthehumaneyetothescreen,justasStanleyKubrickusedvanishingpointstoenhancethedramaofhismovies.Theindoortheatrealsoconsistsofsixbalconyspacesandageneralview-ingspace.Therearetwelvebalconyseatsthatareavailableuponreservationandthereareeighty-eightgeneralviewingspaces-givingtheindoortheatreone-hundredavailableseats. TheoutdoortheatreismadeupofaseriesoffourviewingpodsthataresuspendedoveraportionofthePotomacRiver.Eachpodhas28seatsavailableandisprotectedfromtheelements.Filmsintheoutdoortheatreareprojectedontoadockedferrywithalargetemporaryviewingscreen.Thereisoneshowingpernight.

1928isafashioncenterlocatedonequartermilewestofTheWhiteHouse.It’sadjacenttoPennsylvaniaAve.andfacesJamesMonroePark.Becauseoftheheavypedestriantrafficinthisareaandtheuniqueopenspacecreatedbythepark,thefashioncenterwillbeseenbyallasalocaliconofD.C. Thefashioncenterisconceptualizedafteroneofthemosticonicelementsoffashion:thezipper.Inadditiontoit’siconicimage,thezipperaestheticalsocreatesaseamthatrunsthelengthofthefashioncenterandallowsnaturallightandairtomovethrougheveryfloor.Peoplecanbeseenwalkingupthetrans-parentstaircaseandenjoyingviewsofthecityfromawidearrayofbalconyspaces. ThestructureofthebuildingismadeupofdigitallyfabricatedsteelbracingandfibreCcladding.Thesteelactsastheskeletonofthefashioncenterandispiecedtogetherseamlesslyonsitetocreat-ingwhatappearstobeamonolithicstructure.Allofthebuildingloadscanbetracedtothesteel.Thefashioncenterisalsorelativelytransparent.Becausemuchofthebuildingismadeupofglass,plexi,andpolycarbonate,peoplecanbeseenclimbingthestairsandenjoyingthebalconyspacesfromthestreet.Thistransparencygivesthefashioncenterakineticquality,alongwiththegesturalformofthearchitecture. Thearchitecturecatersitselftotheseasonsoffashion.Therearefourmajorshowsayearforthewinter,spring,summerandfallcollections.Althoughseatingislimitedfortheshowsinside,therunwayonthethirdfloorprotrudesoutintothestreet,extend-ingtheshowtothepublic.Therunwaystopsatthewindowallowingmodelstoposeforguestsbothinsideandoutsidethefashioncenter.ThismakesitpossibleforspectatorstoenjoytheshowfromJamesMonroeParkfreeofcharge,andallowsthefashioncentertoextendit’susershiptoamuchbroaderaudience.
