BTC was established by the Baptist Union of Southern Africa in 1951 and was Birst located in CentralJohannesburg.ThereasonforestablishingBTCwastopreparepastorsforBaptistchurches.OvertheyearsthefocushasbroadenedsigniBicantlytoincludenotonlythetrainingofpastorsforchurchesbutalsoyouthpastors andmissionaries. The denominational focus has also changed, andBTC nowwelcomes learnersfromalldenominationsandchurchbackgroundswhoarewillingtoaccepttheStatementofFaith.
Overthepast64yearsBTChasestablisheditselfasoneofthepremierministrytraininginstitutionsinthecountrywelcomingadiversestudentbody.

BTCStaffFACULTY
ThePrincipal:DrMartinPohlmann
DrMartinPohlmann(MGC,HonLTh,BTh,HonBTh,MA,D.LittetPhil)wascalledtocommenceasPrincipalofBTCin2004.
Hewas at the time Senior Pastor of both the Trinity Baptist Church andEdenvale Baptist Church. He was lecturing Systematic Theology on apart-timebasisatBTCandservedontheCollegeCouncilasChairman.
His passion is ‘reaching this generation by teaching this generation’ inbiblical truth and practicalministry. After publishing four book titles andmany journal articles he continues to lecture in Systematic Theology andEthics.
RecentlyDrPohlmannwasappointedtothepositionofAssociateProfessorattheUniversityofNorthWest.He will continue to supervise Masters dissertations and Doctoral Theses while also marking the postgraduateworkdoneatseveralofouruniversities.
RegistrarandMissiologist:DrDesmondHenry
Desmond is married to Lara and has three daughters; Gabriella,AnnabellaandOlivia,whoare twins.Laraservesasa teacher ina localChristianschool.DesmondgraduatedwithaBachelorofTheologyHon.from BTC and accepted a call to the Open Baptist Church in Gabarone(Botswana),whereheservedasanAssociatePastoruntil2011,whenheaccepted the Executive Pastor post at Eastside Community Church inPretoriaEast.
DesmondcompletedhisMastersdegreewiththeUniversityofPretoriain2011 and is one of the few PHD graduates in Missiology in SouthernAfrica.Desmondhasaloveforpeopleandenjoysacademicengagementand has published a book, ‘Quintessential Mission’, and authorednumerousarticlespublishedinaccreditedjournals(nationallyandinternationally).
Earlierin2014,DesmondwasappointedasanExtraordinaryLecturertotheNorthWestUniversitytoworkintheareaofPHDstudentsalongsideBTC.
Desmond joinedBTC fulltime inOctober2012as the staffMissiologist, andhasbeenappointedRegistrarandMissiologistinSeptember2014.

Gregory‘Piff ’Pereira(BTh(Arts),LThHons(BTC).MA,D.LittetPhil(UnivofJHB),D.Litt et Phil (Univ of Pretoria) obtainedhisBTh (Arts)degree fromtheUniversity of Zululand in 1996 and in that same year he received hisLicentiate in Theology (LTh) from the Baptist Theological College inJohannesburg.
HehasservedastheSeniorPastoroftheNewLifeBaptistChurch,Bosmontfor tenyears.Whilepastoring, Piff completedhisMAdegree atRAUwithdistinctionandwentontocompletehisdoctoraldegreeinNewTestamentTheologyin2002atthesameUniversity.
During his time here at BTC he completed a second doctoral degree in 2010, this time inOld TestamentstudiesthroughtheUniversityofPretoria.

Terrel servedasaStudentPastorandAssociatePastor (WorshipandEvangelism)at theNewLifeBaptistChurch (Bosmont) for sevenyears.He thereafterwascalled tohishometown inStangerwherehe servedwith his family in theBethel Baptist Church, Valley ViewBaptist Church (Glendale) and helped plant thePhakamani-BethelBaptistChurch(LOT14inStanger).AfternineyearsofministryintheStangerarea,hejoinedtheBTCstaff.

TheCollegeappliestheprinciplesofOutcomesBasedEducation(OBE).OBEisdesignedtoteachLearnersspeciBicknowledgeorprinciples that they candemonstrate inmeasurableoutcomes.ThismethodgreatlyassistsLearnerstofulBilltheobjectivesoftheprogrammesforwhichtheyhavebeenenrolledandtoachievethestandardrequirement.
PracticalCompetency
The College has made enormous strides in the last decade in practical competency. Learners can onlygraduate if theyhave signiBicant practicalministry experience. They are also required to be involved in alocalchurchwhilestudyingatBTC.Learner’sassignmentsrequiredifferentaspectsofpracticalexperience.Input from church and ministry leaders regarding Learner performance in speciBic ministry assists inmeasuringthe‘OBE’objectives.
WebelievethatGodhasequippedustodevelopandtrainmenandwomenwhohaveadesiretobebetterequipped forministry. Our particular focus areas are training people for long-term, effectiveministry aspastorsoflocalchurches,youthpastors/workersandcross-culturalmissionaries.

ThemimimumrequirementforentryintothisprogrammeistobeinthepositionofaHonoursdegreeorafour(4)yearBachelor’sdegreethushavingfourhundredandeighty(480)creditsinarelevantBieldofstudyfromaUniversityorHigherEducationandTraining(HET)institutionthatisregisteredwiththeDepartmentofHigherEducation.
Applicants will be considered for admission on the basis of the recognition of prior learning and/orexperience(RPL/E)providedthatsuchapplicanthassatisBiedtheCollegeoftheirsuitabilityforthedegreebymeansthatshallbedeterminedonanindividualbasisbythepost-graduatecommittee(seeRPL/Epolicyabove).
ApplicantswhodonotpossestherequiredqualiBicationsoutlinedabovemaybeeligibleforadmissiononthebasis of previouswork experience. In this instance a personwith knowledge of the employmentmay benominatedtoactasareferee.

ApplyingforPostGraduatestudies
Learners are strongly advised to write to the College and submit a formal application for post graduatestudies,clearlystatingthecourseyouaspiretostudysothattheCollegeisabletoensurethatthefacilitiesandexpertsupervisorsnecessaryforthecoursesareavailable.
Applicantsshouldsubmittheirapplicationsasearlyaspossibleintheacademicyearpriortothatinwhichtheywishtostudy.Inadditiontotheapplicationprocessrequiredunderthesection“applicationprocedure”,a) documentary evidence of your qualiBications (original or certiBied copies); b) other supportinginformation,suchassignedreferences(refereesshouldnormallybelecturersinhighereducationwithdirectknowledgeofthecandidate’sacademicprogress);andc)abriefoutlineofthedissertationproposalshouldbesubmitted.Althoughyoumaymakeyourapplicationatanytime,youshouldbeawarethatthelastdayforpostgraduateapplicationsisthe31stofOctoberofeachyear.
Oncetheapplicationhasbeenassessed, theapplicantwillbe informedas towhetherornot theapplicantqualiBiesforadmissiontotheprogramme.
It should be noted that in the case where an applicant is refused admission to the programme withoutassigningareason,theapplicantcanappealdirectlytotheCollegeCounsil.TheBinaldecisiononwhethertheapplicantisacceptedorrefusedadmissionintotheprogrammethenlieswiththeCollegeCounsel.
Applicationsareassessedontheirownmeritsandwhereapplicable,anexampleofthecandidate’swrittenworkmayberequired.
SuccessfulapplicantswillthenbecontactedbytheDeanofStudies,whomustbeafulltimememberoftheacademic faculty, to set up an appointment for an interview in which the dissertation proposal will bediscussed. The applicant’s motivation and suitability for the programme will also be assessed in theinterview.

PotentialLearnerscanapplyforastudypermitattheSouthAfricanHighCommission,Embassy,ConsulateorTradeMissionintheirowncountry(countryof
origin).IfthereisnoSouthAfricanrepresentativeintheircountry, they must apply to the South African HighCommission, Embassy, Consultate or Trade Missionnearesttotheirhomecountry.

Recognitionofpriorlearningfromoutsideinstitutions
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) allows recognition for skills or knowledge previously acquiredregardlessofwhethersuchskillsorknowledgewasobtainedthroughformalorinformalmeans.
If a Learner has prior learning or experience in the areas of past studies or relevantministry exposure,acknowledgementintheformofthegrantingofcreditsmaybeappliedaccordingtotheprocessorRPL.
RPL candidateswill receive a formal assessment anddepending on the level of experience or knowledgeacquired,maybeawardedcreditstowardaformalqualiBication.

UndergraduateProgrammes
Assignments count 50%of the Binalmark and the examinationmark counts for the other 50% tomakeupa100%. Ifasubjectdoesnothaveanexamination,thentheassignmentwillcountforthefull100%Binalmar.
Learnersarerequiredtoscoreatleast50%onassignmentsinordertodemonstratecompetence,and50%onexaminationstopass.
Shouldalearnergetlessthan50%forthecourse,theywillfailthecourseandwillneedtoredothespeciBiccourseasunfortunatelywedonotentertainsupplementaryexaminations.
2.CREDITACCUMULATIONANDQUALIFICATION
Each course is worth twelve (12) credits that will accrue towards your qualiBication. When youcomplete your studies, whether or not you have earned a qualiBication, youwill be issuedwith atranscriptdetailingallyoursubjectsandthecreditsyouhaveearned.
Learnerswillneedtoaccumulateten(10)coursecredits(onehundredandtwentycreditsintotal)tobeawardedaqualiBicationatCertiBicatelevel,thirty(30)coursecreditsforaDiplomaandforty(40)coursecreditsforaBachelorofTheology.

Examinations
Examinations areheld at the endof each semester, namely in June andNovember, and commenceon thestipulateddaysat9:00am.Ifastudenthasaclashoftwosubjectsonthesameday,thesecondexamwillbewrittenon the samedayat1:00pm. If it is impossible towriteon the setdate forvalid reasons, theonlyalternativewillbeforthestudenttowriteaccordingtotheAegrotat/rewritetimetable.Aegrotat/rewritesare conducted in July/August for Birst semester subjects and in January/February for second semestersubjects.
Fulltime students write examinations at the College in designated examination venues, whilecorrespondence/distance learners are required to arrange an invigilator to oversee their examinations.DistancelearnersmayelecttowritetheirexaminationsattheCollegeifproximitypermits.
Distancelearning/correspondenceexaminations
An invigilator needs to be either a pastor or senior leader of a church, or a school teacher. Under nocircumstances is any learner allowed to be invigilated by a friend or family member. The rules andregulationspertaining todistance learning/correspondenceexaminationsare setout indetail andwillbesenttobothstudentandinvigilatorattheappropriatetime.
Moderation
BTC has formal agreements with a variety of accredited higher education institutions regarding themoderationofexaminations.Thisensuresthatthestandardofexaminationsismaintainedatahighlevelaswell as safeguarding the fairness of the examination questions. External moderation requires that theexaminationswrittenbyBTClearnersarecheckedcarefullyforqualityandintegritybythefacultyofothersimilarinstitutions.
