ABOUT INSTITUTE

History:

Vidya Prasarak Mandal (VPM) is a premier educational trust in Thane which was

established in August 1935. Ex. President Late Dr. V. N. Bedekar had a dream of creating an

“Island of Knowledge” (Jnandweepa) in Thane. He had a great foresight for young generation of developing Thane city and need of education to turn this youth into good citizens of India

and with this singular zeal, and enthusiastic support from his colleagues, succeeded in bringing

it in reality.

In 1969, Vidya Prasarak Mandal‟s College started functioning with all three faculties -Arts,

Commerce and Science on a 13.5 acre piece of land which was marshy, muddy area inundated

by water of the nearby Thane creek during high tide.

The then Chief Minister of Goa, Hon. Shri Dayanand (Bhausaheb) Bandodkar gave

a generous donation for the construction of Science College building in his father‟s name „Balkrishna Naik Bandodkar‟. The affiliation of College was changed to University of Mumbai

from University of Pune in June 1975, and in the same year, B. N. Bandodkar College of

Science was separated from the Arts and Commerce College for convenience of administration.

Our college received UGC recognition from 1986.

Late Dr. V. N. Bedekar, founder member of VPM had great foresight for the young

generation of developing Thane city and aware of the need of education to turn these youth into

good citizens of India. Our institute has great legacy of Gyan-Tapasvi Dr. V. N. Bedekar.

Continuing his legacy the present leadership of Dr. Vijay Bedekar, chairman of VPM and

Principal Dr. (Mrs.) M. K. Pejaver provide clear vision and mission to the institution.

Location:

The College is very close to Thane Railway Station, TMT, NMMT and State Transport

Bus Stand.

Accreditations: College was assessed for Accreditation in August 2003 by the National Assessment and

Accreditation Council (NAAC) set up by UGC and was awarded B++ grade. After

Reaccreditation “A” grade was awarded in 2010. Our college received the Best College Award

from University of Mumbai in the year 2009- 2010. Our college is selected by Ministry of

Science and Technical Education for the programme under FIST “O” Level in 2012. Our

College won the IMC RBNQ Certificate in the Education Category for the year 2014

Our Infrastructure:

The College is located in Building No. 6 and 7 on a spacious campus. The College is having hi

tech Laboratories, modern Library, air-conditioned auditorium Patanjali with all modern

facilities like Smart board, Patanjali Yoga Kendra, and well equipped Gymkhana with

gymnasium, Our entire campus is Wi – Fi (wire free). Internet facility is available to the

EXAMINATIONS, TUTORIALS AND ASSIGNMENTS SYSTEM OF THE

COLLEGE

Evaluation of Students

We consider teaching-learning and evaluation of students as an integral part of education

system. So we have developed strong, efficient, effective evaluation mechanism based

on sincerity, secrecy and sanctity as its characteristics at every process.

Evaluation of students is undertaken in the following manner –

Conduct of Examinations - (University Pattern of credit and grading system)

Examinations of B.Sc. a n d M . S c . Degree Courses

Conduct of Examinations on Behalf of University

In case of B.Sc., the examinations of semester I, II, III, IV are conducted by the

college on behalf of the University.

Conduct of Examinations by University

The examinations of Semester V and VI and M.Sc. examinations are conducted by

the University.

.a) Credit and grading system:

Mumbai University has introduced credit and grading system of evaluation from year

2011-12. In credit system each semester is assigned 20 credits Semester examinations

are conducted at the end of each semester. Evaluation is based on internal examination

(25 marks) and External Examination (75 marks). Passing Percentage is 40% in both

internal and external examination separately. Evaluation is done by marking system

.Marks are converted in grades and later on grade points are given for each course.

Successful students get SGPA (Semester grade point average) for each semester. From

SGPA of all semester GPA (Grade point average) is calculated in VI semester by

University. Based on GPA, final grade is allotted to candidate.

The entire work of assessment of answer books at s e m e s t e r examinations is

centralized within the premises of the college.

d) Moderation:

Random moderation of 10% of the answer books assessed by the examiners for all

examinations is being carried out, so as to ensure uniformity and objectivity in

assessment. However, there is no moderation wherever total number of answer books in a

paper is less than 100.

e) Verification /photocopy / revaluation:

The facility for Verification /photocopy / revaluation of answer book is available.

Verification includes correction of mistakes in transfer of entries, totaling and correction
