For Bowel Cancer Awareness Month in April

The PMA has chosen Bowel Cancer UK as it’s charity for the year and will be raising funds for them at the annual Christmas lunch.

To commemorate Bowel Cancer Awareness Month in April, the PMA has joined forces with Bowel Cancer UK to share the story of Patrick Wymer, former PMA member, who has had to retire in January due to ill health.

Patrick, age 53, based in Penarth in Cardiff, has worked in the retail property industry since 1986. For most of his career he has worked for retail companies, most notably Laura Ashley (12 years) and Primark (11 years). He was both a full and associate member of the PMA during this time.

Around Easter 2017 Patrick began to experience mild but persistent stomach pains and visited his GP. It soon emerged, after some visits to A&E, that he had to have am emergency operation to remove a large tumour from the bowel and was given a stoma. Following analysis of the tumour and a scan, it was confirmed that the tumour was cancerous and that the disease had spread beyond the bowel to the liver and the lungs. Patrick was told he had incurable stage 4 bowel cancer. Patrick has been undergoing a long series of chemotherapy which is still continuing.

Patrick commented: “I’ve been overwhelmed by the support and kindness I’ve received from people across the retail and property world. Although the last nine months have been very difficult for me and the family, it’s genuinely helped us to cope knowing that so many people are behind us. I also have a fundraising walk to look forward to – details can be found on the PMA website.”

Luke Squires, Director of Fundraising at Bowel Cancer UK and Beating Bowel Cancer, said: “We are delighted to be chosen as the Property Managers Association’s Charity of the Year 2018. Patrick is very close to the charity’s heart and he is a huge supporter of our
