Chelsea’s Story

Students are our top priority at Northland. Every gift to Northland College—no matter what form it takes—makes a difference to our students. When you make a gift to Northland, you have great flexibility in determining how you do it. Contributing to an existing scholarship endowment, or starting a scholarship endowment of your own, are powerful ways to make a lasting impact on our student body.

• 99% of Northland students receive and need financial assistance. • About 35% of first-generation Northland students come from a household earning less than $60,000 per year.

• 86% of students are employed through campus employment.

Scholarships at NorthlandGeneral Northland Scholarship Fund Gifts of any amount, designated for scholarships, are combined with other gifts to provide annual student financial assistance. Students are notified that their awards are made possible through the Northland Scholarship Fund and are supported by donor gifts.

Named Annual Scholarship With an annual gift of $1,000 or more, a donor can provide an annual scholarship that is applied in the full amount of the gift to one or more Northland students. The donor may name the annual scholarship. Permanent Endowed Scholarship Fund A donor can establish a permanent scholarship fund that is carefully invested within the College endowment and annual earnings are used to provide scholarship awards. The donor may name the permanent scholarship. The minimum gift or pledge to establish a permanent endowed scholarship is $25,000. This gift can be funded over a period of up to five years and/or through a bequest from a will or living trust. For more information on an endowed scholarship please contact the Northland College Advancement Office at (800) 318-2583 or learn more online at northland.edu/scholarships.

Without the scholarships and financial aid that I received, it would have been difficult for me to finance four years of school. I received the Lake Superior Scholarship, which was a huge help financially. I also received the Sentry Insurance Scholarship and Stafford government loans. Scholarships and financial aid allowed me to be able to attend Northland for four years, which has given me a great education along with the opportunity to play volleyball and basketball for all four years. After I graduate from Northland, I will be attending gradu-ate school to receive an international master’s degree in business administration. Thank you for your support of scholarships.

The Importance of Scholarships

Jennifer Courtwright `10 Slidell, Louisiana

Jennifer’s Story Scholarships that I received allowed me to take a course in Australia, travel across the country on community service trips, and attend many scientific conferences. After graduating from Northland, I will be attending graduate school to pursue a master’s degree in biology. After obtaining my degree, I hope to be an ecologist at The Nature Conservancy.

Scholarships and financial aid have helped me reach my goal of attending the college that I wanted. I would not have been able to afford it otherwise. I honestly don’t know what I would have done or where I would be today without my scholar- ships. I hope I would have been able to attend North- land, but I don’t think I could have been able to afford it. My scholarships have provided me with the opportunity to go to a school where I can reach my academic goals and play soccer. After graduating, I hope to get a job involving zoology, fisheries, or DNR work. I plan to be successful in the career I choose.
