The disasters since 2005 have claimed 76,055 lives and aected 37 million people. Moreover, the nancial and economic impact of these events is in billions of dollars. Due to the crucial need for mainstreaming disaster risk reduction in Pakistan, the project plan was initiated to support the government and other stakeholders in drafting a ve year programme under the umbrella of One Programme-II. The project initiation plan will further enhance disaster risk reduction capacities at the national and sub-national levels. Based on the outcomes of OP-II's strategic priorities area 3, the plan aims towards developing a more pragmatic approach for dening future courses of action in consultation with donors and international nancial institutions. The plan also provides space to review and reect upon the lessons learnt from the earlier interventions and review dierent assessments and reports, including the recently completed review of One UN Joint Programme on disaster risk management. Expected Results National, provincial and district capacities

enhanced in the prevention, assessment, management and reduction of risks;

Vulnerable populations bene�t from improved and sustainable environmental management practices, including climate change mitigation and adaptation; and

Vulnerable populations are supported for improved prevention, risk reduction and response (mitigation) mechanisms, and are assisted to reach development goals including Mil lennium Development Goals.

formulation has been initiated and is under progress;

Technical support provided to 41 districts, 4 provinces, Gi lgit -Balt istan and Federal ly Administered Tribal Areas;

National Disaster Management Authority was supported with three technical experts in disaster risk management.

What�s Next? Hold national consultations with the government,

UN agencies, international �nancial institutions and non-government organizations to identify issues to be addressed during the next cycle of disaster risk reduction programme. Also hold consultations at the provincial and district levels on a selective basis.

Identify programme areas, which would include early warning systems, preparedness and response, mitigation and recovery.

Engage in greater advocacy of institutional and �nancial reforms in the context of the recent

thchanges introduced by 18 Amendment as well as the experience of large-scale �oods.

Recommend management and implementation arrangements for the disaster risk reduction programme, keeping in mind the lessons of the existing One UN disaster risk management programme and decentralized context of Pakistan.

Engage with the Political Champions Group to present issues and a course of action for the purpose of seeking broader technical and �nancial assistance for disaster risk management.
