It gives Donna and me great pleasure in welcoming you to the Run Geordie Run Around The World Ball in aid of The Children's Foundation and The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation. I’d also like to extend a special welcome to VIP guests from both charities: Dr Martin Ward-Platt and Lady Elsie Robson.

I’m delighted that we will also be joined by members of my support team and representatives from sponsors SOS Group, Fresh Freight Group and Cherry Active.

The generosity of friends, family, colleagues and the general public never ceases to amaze me and it will be a genuinely humbling experience to see so many people in The Biscuit Factory tonight.

We have a great opportunity this evening, not only to raise vital funds for 2 brilliant North East charities, but to also recognise and thank some key people for their continued hard work and dedicated support. All of that will be done against a backdrop of fun and entertainment with a few surprises thrown in too.

To ensure that the evening runs smoothly we have, as our hosts, the brilliant BBC Radio presenters Gary Phillipson and Lisa Shaw. These 2 special people have backed my charity exploits since 2010 when the Run Geordie Run brand was in its infancy. We subsequently shared many happy, tough, emotional and jubilant times on the airwaves together during the run across the USA in 2011 and then, of course, across Australia in 2013.

I’m also very excited about our band this evening, Tiny Afro. I remember being quite amazed when I first saw them, at the length of time they were able to keep the dance floor packed playing many pop and rock anthems. Nobody had much of a breather that night, I can tell you!

Please keep a look out for the various fundraising stalls, activities, raffles and auctions. There is something for everyone, whether it be a signed Lionel Messi shirt, Newcastle United match day hospitality, Champagne afternoon tea, Ladies Day hospitality or a night at the dogs!

At the time of writing, 6,358 miles of the run Around The World have been completed in the UK, USA and Australia. There is now just the small matter of running the final 13,642 miles. The journey continues in Europe next year with Central Eurasia, China, Japan and New Zealand to follow later. None of that would be possible without the support of so many people who you’ll see mentioned throughout this programme and hear more about during the course of the evening.

Finally, we are hurtling towards a huge charity fundraising milestone of a quarter of a million pounds! With your generosity, I’m really hopeful that we can get even closer to it this evening.

I hope you all have a brilliant evening and thank you so much for being such an important part of it.

Mark

For 25 years The Children’s Foundation has been committed to allowing all children in the region the opportunity for a happy, healthy and safe life.

The Children's Foundation mission statement: “We want to make the health of children and young people in North East of England and Cumbria the best in the country.

The Children’s Foundation was set up in 1990 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne to improve the health and well-being of children and young people in the region which at the time had the worst child-health in the country. 25 years on and we are now the leading regional children’s healthcare charity covering the North East of England and Cumbria focusing on the relief of distress, disability and disadvantage.”

In the last year, The Children’s Foundation reached the lives of over 29,773 children. This was as a result of such projects as Whoops Child Safety, The Adamson Scholarship at Southlands Special School, Stars Awards, DASLne and various schemes at The Great North Children’s Hospital such as the 3D VPOD pain distraction unit and the Clown Doctors.

The charity’s Regional Small Grants Panel has awarded £260,000 to 310 community groups since 1993, which has had a positive impact on more than 51,000 children. Newcastle Toy Library and Cerebral Palsy Sport have been recent beneficiaries of the panel.

In September, His Royal Highness The Duke of York, the charity’s patron, helped launch “…because minding matters”. This is a brand new appeal which focuses on children’s mental health issues in the region.

As well as aiming to raise £2million to help improve the mental health and well-being of youngsters, the appeal supports children, families and professionals working in mental health and the provision of services to tackle mental health illnesses.

Sir Bobby launched his Foundation in 2008, after a request for help, to raise funds to equip what became the Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Trials Research Centre at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care in Newcastle.

The centre offers patients from across the North East and Cumbria access to early drug trials and potential new treatments, and works closely with the Imaging Research Centre to improve diagnosis and study the effects of new drugs.

Often these are ‘first in human’ trials and the Sir Bobby Centre’s dedicated staff also coordinate trials of drugs at later stages of development, working with the

National Cancer Networks to ensure patients get offered the best options for treatment.

Working within the NHS, and in collaboration with Newcastle University and other cancer charities, the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation’s main aim is to help fund world-class cancer treatments that directly benefit patients. It also helps fund projects that enhance cancer patient care.

Thanks to tremendous support, the Foundation has made possible major new approaches to detecting and treating cancer.

In addition to supporting the drug trials within the Sir Bobby Centre, it has been able to:

• Make the majority charitable contribution to 'stereotactic' radiotherapy at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care

• Jointly fund the PET Tracer Production Unit at Newcastle University• Fund the ImageStream Imaging Flow Cytometer, which allows scientists to see cancer cells that may be

circulating in a patient’s blood• Part-fund six years of the complementary therapy programme at the Northern Centre for Cancer

Care• Part-fund creation of a patient Quiet and Information Area at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care• Fund a microscope for Leukaemia Research Cytogenetics Group at the Royal Victoria Infirmary• Enhance a dedicated children’s waiting area at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care• Contribute to the Teenage Cancer Unit at the Great

North Children’s Hospital• Jointly fund a region-wide cancer patient ambulance• Fund a Cancer Support Specialist at Maggie’s Newcastle

Sir Bobby said he would give up a year of his life to the charity. In fact, he became so passionate about it that, despite being very ill, he spent his last 18 months doing all he could to raise funds to find more effective ways to detect and treat cancer through his Foundation.

He described it as “like being at the helm of a team again” - his last and greatest team – and always said ‘when’ not ‘if ’ we beat cancer. Sir Bobby truly believed, with us all pulling together, we will beat the disease.
