WELCOME TO THE ISST D1 TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP

Welcome to American International School – Vienna and to the ISST Division 1 Tennis Tournament, From time to time I visit with alumni, who speak fondly of our great athletic traditions and the memories made through participation in special tournaments like the one you are about to begin. Adults who have been out of school for a generation or more truly cherish the time they had to compete and be part of teams and activities when they attended AIS. Their reflections remind me that such occasions challenge us to play well under pressure, to give our best, and to do so while honoring our opponents, the officials, and the sacrifices the ISST teams and our community have made to support the tournament experience. It’s wonderful to be able to host a season tournament; we thank our Events Office for their organizational skill and experience. The many details we don’t see when a match is in process are necessary and integral to the continued benefit of student competitors across our many schools. We wish you all the best through this experience. Sport is a great metaphor for so much of our adult lives. Words like grit, determination, focus come to mind. So do words like friendship, loyalty, and character. We hope you have a great time, and that you play your finest matches of the year here during the tournament. We’re excited to host you, and hope your experience at AIS is a memorable part of your overall international school experience. Good Luck! Sincerely, Steve Razidlo, Director

It is our pleasure to welcome you to AIS Vienna for the 2016 D1 ISST tournament. Our Events Office has worked hard to manage the details necessary to make sure this is a weekend of not only good tennis, but a weekend where all our guests have a chance to make life long memories. As athletes you have chosen to embrace competition, which means that every time you take the court there is not only the possibility of success, but also the risk that your efforts will not be rewarded. It is in these moments you will find the opportunity to demonstrate the best elements of your character: respect, tenacity, composure, camaraderie, and the ability to manage pressure. These opportunities can help prepare us for many of the challenges life will present, and we trust you will be proud of your memories from this weekend. Particularly with each of you being confronted with the stress and temptation of calling your own lines! We wish you the best of luck, that you have good health, and that you have a great time. Sincerely, Jarret Lambie, High School Principal Dear Guests, The American International School Vienna welcomes you to the 2016 ISST Division 1 Tennis Championship. We are very happy to be able to host this tournament at the wonderful Tennis Point Club which borders the city center itself. We wish you all the very best for the tournament. My personal thanks go to the following; the AIS community who have opened up their homes to the visiting athletes, the school administration and teachers, the Tournament Staff, and the Events Office--Nick DeForest, Claudia Bonek and Karin Hackl without their hard work this event would simply not take place. I would like to wish you all a successful and memorable championship and hope that you enjoy your short stay with us. Andy Harrison, Director of Athletics, Activities and Events

I.S.S.T. Statement of Sportsmanship The purpose of the International Schools Sports Tournament is to provide a venue for athletes from the member schools to compete in an environment that is safe, challenging, professional and educational. Each athlete is given the opportunity to demonstrate her/his best athletic ability while maintaining a spirit of respect and co-operation with fellow athletes from various international backgrounds. Each event involves students and adults in their different roles: these include the athletes, coaches, sports officials and spectators. All those involved in the event are expected to uphold the same spirit of respect and co-operation. This spirit is demonstrated by fair play among athletes, positive encouragement from coaches, impartial judgments from officials and respectful enthusiasm from spectators. The behavior of the adults is crucial to the successful educational aspect of the tournament. The adults act as models for our athletes. Therefore profanity, deliberately making noises that distract and interfere with the performance of a competing athlete, the condemnation of coaches or officials, or any behavior that is disrespectful or degrading to the ISST standard of sportsmanship, jeopardizes the purposes of the ISST organization and, most of all, jeopardizes the quality of the experience for the athletes. As the event ensues, we ask that all of our parents, coaches, officials and athletes keep this vision of our purpose in mind.

Thank you to all those who have made this tournament possible!
