GENERAL INFORMATION

Some courses listed in this guide may not actually be offered due to low enrollment. Because of scheduling conflicts and classes closing, a teacher may not be able to register for every course he/she plans to take. For this reason, a teacher should have in mind alternate courses in case the first choice is not available. In cases of limited class enrollment, priority will be given to teachers that register first.

REQUIREMENTS

Staff Development Flex Days Each professional must accumulate a minimum of two flex days (12 learning hours) between June 8, 2015 and October 1, 2015 to be used for the October 12, 2015 and March 25, 2016 staff development days. All professional development applicable to flex days must be taken during off-contract time. • Prior approval from the principal (or director) is required for all sessions and

must be documented on the Flex Days for Staff Development form. See Appendix A.

Professional Learning Flex Day Guidelines The two days are “compensation” for attendance and participation in training sessions that occur during off-contract time. Given these parameters, “flex day” credit will not be given for online training, training that occurs during the school day (including professional development periods), training that occurs during a “regular” staff meeting, university course work dedicated to a degree program, and/or independent book studies.

◆ Accumulation of the two flex days begins June 8, 2015 and ends October 1, 2015.

◆ All professional learning applicable to flex days must be taken during off-contract time.

◆ School-wide professional learning sessions that address campus initiatives will be accepted with principal approval.

◆ Prior approval from the principal or director is required for all sessions. ◆ Sessions must be at least 90 minutes to qualify for consideration. ◆ The principal or director will certify each flex day and/or report non-compliance

by October 2, 2015 for appropriate payroll accounting. ◆ Credit may be given for (with principal or director pre-approval):

◆ Weekend conferences and conferences off contract time ◆ Summer training sessions in and out of the district ◆ Up to 6 hours of presenting a workshop at the district level ◆ New Hire required training ◆ 6 hours of site-based training off contract time (constitutes one day) ◆ Curriculum writing (if selected as part of the district writing team)

Page 5: Professional Development Course Selection Guide · Cassandra Darst Ph.D. Director of Business Services . Becky Campbell. Director of Child Nutrition ... Curriculum writing (if selected

◆ Credit will not be given for:

◆ More than 6 hours of presenting a workshop ◆ Supervising of student competitions (i.e. UIL, Math Counts, etc.) ◆ Meetings

PRINCIPLES OF LEARNING, TEACHING AND CURRICULUM

LWISD teachers work with the understanding of the thirteen principles of learning, teaching, and the curriculum. Each principle directly connects to the classroom and the professional development in LWISD uses these principles as a guide to teacher’s learning.

The Principles of Learning:

• Effort produces achievement.

• Learning is about making connections.

• We learn with and through others.

• Learning takes time.

• Motivation matters.

The Principles of Teaching:

• The teacher matters.

• Focused teaching promotes accelerated learning.

• Clear expectations and continuous feedback activate learning.

• Good teaching builds on students’ strengths and respects individuals’ differences.

• Good teaching involves modeling what students should learn.

The Principles of Curriculum:

• The curriculum should focus on powerful knowledge.

• All students should experience a “Thinking Curriculum.”

• The best results come from having an aligned instructional system.
