Grades 1 to 3 - The Foundation Phase:

The main skills in the First Additional Language curriculum are:

• Listening and speaking• Reading and phonics• Writing and handwriting

The Khalipha MfundiworkbookshavebeenproducedtofulfiltheneedformaterialforisiZuluasafirstadditionallanguage.ThebooksrangefromGrade1to12.

They are based on the curriculum and vocabulary proposed by the Zulu User GroupandincorporatestheCurriculumandAssessmentPolicyStatement(CAPS).

CAPS representsapolicy statement for learningand teaching inSouthAfricanschools. It replacestheNationalCurriculumStatement(NCS)of2002,2003and2005.

“ThinkingandReasoning”and“LanguageStructure”whichwerepartoftheoldNCS(NationalCurriculumStatement)arenowintegratedintoall4languageskills(listening,speaking,readingandwriting).

The First Additional Language curriculum is packaged according to the following skills:

In this reader you will learn a little bit about Thabiso and each member of his family. You will then be able to refer to each member of your family in isiZulu.

Sithengani? (What are we buying?)

This reader will teach you basic phrases that you can use when going to the shops. You will be able to happily push your trolley around the shops and refer to the basic items in isiZulu.

Ilanga likaThemba (Themba’s Day)

This reader follows a day in the life of Themba. Join him as he wakesup,getsdressed,goes to school,comeshome,playswithhistoys,takesabathandthengoesbacktobedintheevening.

Uhamba ngani? (How do you travel?)

This reader will teach you how to refer to different modesof transport in isiZulu. It will also teach you how to refer tosome of the places you are going to.

Epulazini (On the farm)

Getoutoftownandlearnaboutlifeonthefarm.Inthisreaderyou will learn about the different animals and equipmentfound on the farm.

Level 3

Ikhaya lami (My home)

Matthew takes us on a tour of his home. He tells us what he does in each of the areas that make up his house and garden. Learnthevocabularyassociatedwiththetheme‘Ehkaya’(athome),includingroomsofthehouseanditemsoffurniture.

Siyaqoka (We are dressing)

JessicaandAbigailareplayingdressupwithmomanddad’sclothes. Read along with them and learn the words for the different items of clothing. By the end of the reader you will be able to describe what you and your friends are wearing using isiZulu words.

It is important to eat fruit and vegetables if we want to keep our bodies healthy. Read about the characters and their favourite fruit and vegetables. By the end of the reader you will be familiar with the words for most of the common fruits and vegetables.
