A class of five to seven year olds constructed their own Ten Commandments for today’s world:

1. You must not smash windows. 2. Don’t steal things. 3. Don’t kick and punch and bite and scratch 4. Share with others. 5. Don’t say rude things to God. 6. Have respect for others. 7. If someone is going up a mountain, don’t pull their legs. 8. Don’t hit people on the head with ham-mers. 9. Don’t swear. 10.Don’t pollute the land.

This exercise was done almost 10 years ago, the more recent move by the Roman Church to update the Ten Commandments obviously follows in the wake of these children’s thoughts, I wonder how many of you, as parents, can read paren-tal instructions through the ten above. Jesus did not discount the ten original commandments, but added something ex-tra, something perhaps which requires more grown up thinking; “This is my commandment: that you love one another, as I have loved you. There is no greater love than this, that someone should lay down his life for his friends”. John 15: 12. To follow this commandment means that all the others hold good also, we really don’t have to get bogged down in dotting I’s and crossing the T’s, but make no mistake loving one another at times is no easy task, and for some we might en-counter fairly challenging! Jesus used these words to his disciples in preparation for his Passion and death, here and now in April 2008 we are on the other side of that festival of Easter, but continuing to celebrate Jesus resurrection, and reminding ourselves that there is

Caythorpe Hand Bells Treasure Hunt Some 20 hardy teams braved a very cold Easter Saturday, (blizzards every hour on the hour!) and took part in the Treasure Hunt round the village. Congratulations to Team Armstrong who won the prize, and many, many thanks to all who took part. Grateful thanks to all those who assisted with cake sales, the Raffle and teas - in particular Janet Avison, Ruth Watson, Brenda Gilman, Jo Rus-sell, Judith Scott, June Freshney and various washer-uppers. Also those who donated raffle prizes. A personal thank you to my husband, Roger, who set the Treasure Hunt, for which I accept no responsibility! A successful (if chilly) afternoon raised some £280 towards the restora-tion of our bell. We have also received several generous donations from local businesses which means we are well on the way to achieving our target.

Caythorpe and District Gardening Society March Meeting

Garden designer and broadcaster Alan Mason entertained members with a tour of European gardens he visited during the making of his Channel 4 series 'Gardens without Borders' explaining how the classic rules of garden design have influ-enced the development of our own gardens. From the grand water features of Villa d'Este and Chatsworth and the great parterre gardens of France and Holland to the small, but exquisite 20th century garden at York Gate near Leeds, all have followed tried and tested traditions that work beautifully. Show commitee chairman, Gary Greenhalgh reminded everyone that the date for this year's show is Saturday, August 30th and that as well as the Fuchsia compe-tition for members there will be a new 'potato in a bucket' contest. He empha-sised, however, that the show is open to anyone in the Caythorpe district of all ages and skills. Entry forms will be available later in the year. Society chairman, David Fidler, gave details of the proposed visit to Kexby House - a five acre garden between Lincoln and Gainsborough - and Pam Tatum's Hall Farm nursery near Gainsborough on June 19th. The Society meets every second Tuesday in the month in Carlton Scroop village hall at 7.30p.m. The April meeting features the art of pruning with Stephen Lov-ell. New members and guests are most welcome.

Marylyn Mason 01400 272068

Caythorpe and District W.I. March was a month of laughter for Caythorpe & District WI. David Anderson's 'Laughter Lines' certainly lived up to the title when he entertained with his poetry, paro-dies and monologues. They livened up a distinctly chilly March evening and warmed everyone's hearts. Sadie Marshall very bravely risked thanking him in verse, which was equally well received. Sheila Sinnatt recounted the very successful Spring Council meeting at Spalding at which former MP and novelist Ann Widdecombe was the very funny and entertaining guest speaker and Pauline Dorey won one of the burseries. She also reported back that the Phoenix meeting held at Leadenham had also been a great success with a wonderful spread of food and another bundle of laughs from guest speaker Gabriella. The competition for a funny newspaper headline was won by Pauline Dorey, 2nd Robbie Squire, 3rd Sue Deavin. The flower of the month competition was won by Diane Causer, 2nd Joan Coppin, 3rd Janet Avison. The subject for the April meeting is 'Field Kitchen' with Caroline Goodwin. The compe-tition is for a favourite cup and saucer. We meet every second Thursday in the month in Caythorpe Village Hall at 7.30pm. We have a varied programme planned for this year and new members and guests are most welcome.

Having just taken delivery of 950ltrs of Oil, total cost £461, unit price 46.14p, I am hoping to ease the pain next time by suggesting we form a a consortium in Caythorpe for a combined delivery date. New Visitor to Our Garden We have been delighted to see a pair of Lesser Redpolls visiting our bird feeders. They are happily sharing the Niger seed with an abundance of Goldfinches. For-tunately we have a good showing of most finches and they, together with the a plentiful supply of various Tit species, are busily getting themselves in good shape for the breeding season. Our peanuts are regularly visited by a pair of Great Spotted Woodpeckers and they certainly give the feeders a bashing, luck-ily they are a metal and not plastic construction! The Blackbirds seem more interested in patrolling their territory than feeding, and readily move off any intruders, the same with the Robins, who can get quite aggressive. We had an incredibly swift visit from a Sparrow Hawk and he suc-cessfully caught himself a meal, but then that is nature's way! The speed at which they burst through the trees is quite breathtaking. There is no doubt this time of year is very beautiful with all the plants springing into life and the sound of birds filling the air.

C.M. Thory.

Caythorpe Primary School would like to say a huge thank you to eve-ryone who braved the inclement weather and took part in the village fete last year. Mr McCafferty presented the school with a cheque for £1250. The money has been spent on providing the school with ‘Activotes’. These are a class set of hand held pods, used in conjunction with our inter-active whiteboards which allow the children to answer multiple choice questions. Their answers are collected, analysed and recorded. They are very useful and all the children are thoroughly enjoying using them. Thank you again.

Obituary of the late Mr. Common Sense 'Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:

Knowing when to come in out of the rain; why the early bird gets the worm; Life isn't always fair; and maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge). His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition. Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer

CAYTHORPE – A PERSONAL VIEW HIGGLEDY-PIGGLEDY DEVELOPMENT

To walk along High Street is to walk the path of village development because it is a mix-ture of careful (present-day) planning, intermingled with the needs of earlier generations to live in close proximity of one another. This seeming untidy mix of old and new does not detract from the overall impression of a living, thriving community, it enhances it. But it tells us something else, and is actually is a far better guide as to how small com-munities functioned in past times, when uncertainty was commonplace among those who lived and worked the land, when living cheek by jowl with your neighbour was a safe-guard against felons and thieves, that roamed the highways and by-ways of the country-side, so people preferred to build their home as close as possible to someone else as it was felt there was security in numbers. This concept of living very close together is not new indeed, it still flourishes in the third world, where many communities still live in a corral-type enclosure with a stockade around the perimeter. Ah, I hear you say, this is Caythorpe, not some village in the back of beyond, where everyone relied on their neighbours for security. If that theory was true why have Cay-thorpe and any number of other villages across the land, based their existence on living cheek by jowl with the people next door? Back to High Street. Most of us walk, or drive along High Street at some time during the week, either tak-ing children to school, maybe visit the Spar shop, or go up to the post office, doctor’s surgery, pub or fish shop but has anyone wondered how the High Street managed to de-velop in such a higgledy-piggledy fashion, with old and new properties adjacent to one another? In any event this abstract sort of village planning has added a certain charm to Caythorpe, easily expressed by the number of small by-ways that lead from High Street into narrow cul-de-sacs, each with its own particular style of dwelling. While we might use the modern term ‘in-fill’ to describe these narrow by-ways they have actually en-

sun lotion or an Elastoplast to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion. Common Sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became contra-band; churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault. Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement. Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason. He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers; I Know My Rights, I Want It Now, It's Not My Fault, and I'm A Victim. Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.'

hanced the overall impression of a pretty village that has somehow managed to unite old and new without appearing to inhibit the attractiveness of each property, and this is what I find so pleasing about our village, its unique character. We have already looked at Wayside Cottage and know that it had been an ale house at some time in its history. An ale house just sold beer or ‘ale’, it was not permitted to sell spirits, for that you needed an inn, or tavern with a licence. Incidentally, the word ‘tavern’ comes from the Latin taberna - trust the Romans to have a name for it! This brings me to the Sun Inn, or as it is now known Hardwick House. Now Hardwick House has seen a lot of changes during its life. From inn with a li-cence to sell spirits, to becoming known locally as the Temperance Hotel, the change had to have happened after 1912 when, according archive records, either the occupiers de-cided not to re-apply for a spirit licence, left the village, or maybe the application for a continuance of a spirit licence was refused. We all know how subtle village humour can be, especially when there is a bit of scan-dal in the air, a sly wink and instead of the Temperance Hotel (why hotel anyway) the then Sun Inn became famous for something else which might have seemed a bit risqué to pre-first world war villagers, the fact is, we shall never know. In any event, the Sun Inn closed and became a private residence. Move forward to the Second World War, when the former Sun Inn became Stonecroft, before its name changed to the now familiar Hardwick House, it was used to house pris-oners of war. I can’t imagine them being housed at Stonecroft prior to the 1944 Opera-tion ‘Market Garden’, that sort of inconsistency was inconceivable with so many para-troopers stationed in and around the village at the time. So the transformation to ‘guesthouse for detainees of His Majesty’s Government’, as being a prisoner of war came to be known, must have happened after the Arnhem raid when P.O.Ws were no longer considered a threat to national security. This brings me to the bungalow opposite the former inn, number 36, (Cavor) that most adaptable building that has seen so many changes down the years, was actually used as a temporary Catholic Church for the prisoners of war living at Stonecroft. Having reached about a quarter of the way up High Street, with the rest of the village to look at, I have a request. Last year, when we had an exhibition in the Village Hall dur-ing the Spring Fete, I promised to contact a lot of people but a health issue raised its ugly head and the remainder of the year was spent getting treatment for breast cancer. Hopefully, that uncertain period is behind me and I am now keen to carry on explor-ing Caythorpe but I need your help in order to continue so if you have any snippet of information about your house and would be willing to share those thoughts, may I come and talk to you? This exploration is a personal view of Caythorpe and how I feel about the village which has endured for centuries, and I am of an age when things about where I live have become important to me and because we all lead such busy lives we seldom have time to catch our breath and this means a lot of the casual history of a place gets forgotten, so my little articles are by way holding on to some of the memories. Can you help me continue with my personal view of Caythorpe?

Leadenham Domestic Waste Site - Correction I was informed that the Leadenham Domestic Waste facility is now open Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday and Monday from 8.00 am to 4.00 pm for pri-vate waste. I understand that this report last month was not entirely correct - I am told the site is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday but not Mon-day.

Apologies to any one who made a fruitless journey

SEEN IN THE GARDEN They are back and they are busy! Long Tailed Tits are coming frequently to the garden particularly to the honeysuckle and hydrangea collecting nesting material as these had not yet been pruned. We have seen the Blue Tits inspecting a hole in the wall as they have previous years while the Coal Tit has found the liners of the hanging baskets excellent for building nests. We just tidy it up when they have finished! One of our greatest pleasures has been watching Jenny Wren looking for food in the tub of pansies outside the window. She hops to the edge, disappears among the plants and the only sign is her tail sticking up among the leaves. This will go on for five minutes or more before she hops off elsewhere. Sparrows still not very noticeable but seem to be inhabiting the hedge that has not been laid and are certainly using the feeder under the beech. The pigeons and Collared Doves are busy courting, bobbing and appearing to curtsey to each other. Looking on the RSPB web site I noted their partnership with BBC Breathing Places Schools, a project to encourage children to become actively involved and learn about wild life. Each term there is one project thus preventing overload. That breezy naturalist, Johnny Kingdom with his infectious enthusiasm for wild-life mentioned this project too. In a book I am reading, there is a story which I feel is worth repeating though some of you will know it. If so please bear with me. It was written by Loren Eiseley in The Star Thrower. ‘An old man was walking on the beach at dawn when he noticed a young man picking starfish stranded by the retreating tide, and throwing them back into the sea, one by one. He asked him why he was doing this. The young man replied that the starfish would die if left exposed to the morning sun. “But the beach goes on for miles and there are thousands of star-fish. You will not be able to save them all. How can your effort make a differ-ence?” The young man looked at the starfish in his hand and then threw it to safety in the waves. “To this one it makes a difference.” ‘ I write this as we approach a cold and stormy Easter so, hopefully, next month we shall be enjoying some really good spring weather.

CAYTHORPE AND FRIESTON VILLAGE HALL Annual report to the Parish Council 2007-2008

My first sad duty is to pay tribute to the late Tony Thiede who until very recently was our Chairman. Before taking up that position, he had for many years been involved in the running and every day maintenance of the building and its activities. He will be sadly missed, not just for his work for the hall, but as a colleague and friend and someone who was always there when he was needed. Our thoughts are with his partner and family at this difficult time. Over the past year the committee have continued with a programme of maintenance and improvement. The interior has been completely redecorated, the lighting improved in the committee room, the guttering and down pipes have been cleaned and repaired, new lighting and shelving installed in the cleaners store, new fridges have been installed in the kitchens and a new floor polisher purchased. The following information reflects the increased use of the hall across a growing range of activities.

Young People. -- Pre School, Mothers and Toddlers, Brownies, Badminton (youth section) Generally more Adult activities--- Keep fit, W.I., Bowls, Craft Club, Solo, Pilates, Badminton, Elections, Parish Council meetings, Hall committee meetings. Annual Events--- Arnhem reunion; Garden Society Show; Church , Village and Village Hall fetes. In addition the hall is a popular venue for children’s parties (15 During the Year) Adult parties and Dances (5) Charity functions (3) Informal seminars (4)

To enable the committee to continue to maintain and improve the building, fund raising is important and three successful major events were held in the past year. The 60’s dance, the Xmas bazaar, and jazz in the garden helped to maintain the development fund. In the future it is intended to improve the heating in the committee room, refurbish the kitchens, have the electrical systems checked and the fuse box in the back porch re-placed. We have been told that the telegraph pole at the Hall gate is due to be removed and when this happens the committee intend to go ahead and build a new porch, one of the reasons it is important to continue to fund raise. Three events are already in the diary for the coming year. Since the introduction of the new refuse collection system the committee find that the provision made for collection from the hall is unsatisfactory. We are limited to the num-ber of bags we can put out each week and the separation of different types of refuse relies on the good will of all users. We also have food waste stored in plastic bags for up to a fortnight. Finally can I thank, first of all,the Parish Council for their continued support, without it the running of the hall would be that much more difficult. Your support is much appreci-ated. Secondly, two members of the committee, although remaining on the committee, are resigning from their posts of Treasurer and Booking secretary. The committee would like to thank Malcolm Brown and Peter Driver for their work over the past years.

Times of Church Services are now on Page 3

The Parish Council have met with officials of the housing association, which administers Loveden View and with representatives of the SKDC housing department who let the council houses in the village. Our con-cern is that young couples with children who live and work locally, and with their extended families living in the village are not being allocated council houses or housing association housing because they do not have enough points. The Parish Council argued that this was unfair on them and their families, and detrimental to the long-term good of the commu-nity. We stated that where a single occupant of a three bed council house would like to voluntarily downsize to a bungalow then a financial sum of up to £2000 should be made available to assist with moving, redecoration etc. This would free up the housing stock for families. We have arranged with the housing association for housing survey to be done with each householder in the village to prove a housing need for more subsidised housing subject to a suitable site being found. We hope everyone will complete and forward the forms before April 7th . The Parish Council met to discuss the proposed incinerator at the Station Road site. It was agreed to forward our environmental concerns to the Environment Agency with a request that an official attends a Parish Council meeting so we can discuss these concerns in person. The next scheduled Parish Council meeting is at 7:15 p.m., Wednesday, May 14th in the Village Hall lounge. There is an open session prior to the start when any relevant parish matter can be raised.
