Editor's Preface

The Fourth South-East Eu ro pean Work shops for Hands on Pri mary Sci ence Ed u ca tionwas held in Bel grade from No vem ber 27th to No vem ber 28th, 2008. It was for the fourth time that this kind of Work shops or Sum mer School was or ga nized in Ser bia and gen er ally in the re gionof South-East Eu rope.

There were 10 in vited talks given on 27th No vem ber in Vin~a In sti tute and the pro mo -tion of trans lated books from French on Ser bian lan guage in Ser bian Acad emy of Sci ences andArts. One half-day work with teach ers and chil dren from the Pri mary School “Sveti Sava”,which has ac cepted Hands-on method in Pri mary Sci ence Ed u ca tion, were on 28th No vem ber.

The site http://rukautestu.vinca.rs is un der the aus pices of the French Acad emy of Sci ences, the Ser bian Acad emy of Sci ences and Arts and Uni ver sity ofBel grade. Dur ing the af ter noon sec tion there were two in vited talks given by Yves Quéré andPi erre Léna, French ac a de mi cians.

The work shop at tracted about 40 par tic i pants from nearly all South-East Eu ro peancoun tries as well as more than 100 teach ers form Ser bian Pri mary Schools on the af ter noon sec -tions dur ing the talks of French ac a de mi cians . This sat is fac tory num ber of re sponses to the callfor par tic i pa tion dem on strates clearly that the topic of this Work shop is of broad in ter est inSerbai and for the coun tries in this re gion.

The par tic i pants had dif fer ent back ground and they hold dif fer ent po si tions: ac a de mi -cians, uni ver sity pro fes sors, sci ence ed u ca tors ac tive in teacher’s train ing, cur ric u lum de vel op -ment and re search.

The or ga ni za tion of this Work shop would not be pos si ble with out the kind and sub stan -tial fi nan cial sup port of Vinca In sti tute of Sci ence, French Em bassy in Ser bia, Ser bian Min is tryof Sci ences and Tech nol ogy as well as from the co-or ga niz ers Euroscience for Ser bia and Ser -bian Phys i cal So ci ety. HANDS –ON SCIENCE EDUCATION

The del e ga tion of French Acad emy of Sci ences, pre sented by ac a de mi cians YvesQuéré and Pi erre Léna, has been in of fi cial visit to Ser bian Acad emy of Sci ences and Arts(SASA) at the end of No vem ber, 2008. A Ser bian La main à la pâte mir ror website has been in -au gu rated on un der the name “Ruka u testu”. The site http://rukautestu.vinca.rs is un der the aus -pices of the French Acad emy of Sci ences (FAS), the Ser bian Acad emy of Sci ences and Arts andUni ver sity of Bel grade.

The be gin ning of this in au gu ra tion was marked by the speech of Nikola Hajdin, thePres i dent of Ser bian Acad emy of Sci ences and Arts: “The group of French ac a de mi cians

founded in 2001 ed u ca tional pro ject “HANDS-ON” with the aim to make sci ence more ap -proach able to chil dren age four to eleven.

The group of en thu si asts is try ing to pro mote this pro ject at our coun try, the pro ject thatmany de vel oped coun tries have in cor po rated into their ed u ca tional sys tem with the at tempt totrans form it and in that way to form the young peo ple for the knowl edge based so ci ety. In thatcon text the fol low ing things were done in our coun try: an op tional course “Dis cover the world”was put for ward; nine books for teach ers and par ents were pub lished; three in ter na tional schools for south east Eu rope were or ga nized as well as the lec ture for min is ters of Ed u ca tion of south -east Europe and numerous training workshops.

We are gath ered here to day for the cer e mony of sign ing the Agree ment on Trans la tionRights for the web-site Hands-On that will be signed by the Acad emy of Sci ences of the FrenchIn sti tute, the Ser bian Acad emy of Sci ences and Arts and Uni ver sity of Bel grade. It is my honorto point out that our coun try is the first one in the re gion that signs this kind of Agree ment withthe Acad emy of Sci ence of the French Institute.

With this Agree ment we gain the trans la tion rights for the best web-site for ed u ca tion in Eu rope, the web-site that is de signed for teach ers and has ap prox i mately 200.000 con nec tions a

The opin ion of Yves Quéré and Pi erre Léna, concernig this event, was : “Le 28novembre 2002 fut signé à Bel grade un ac cord en tre l’Académie serbe des sci ences et des arts,présidée par le Prof. Dr. Nikola Hajdin et l’Académie des sci ences de France, en présenced’Yves Quéré et de Pi erre Léna qui en représentaient le Président Jules Hoffmann. Cet ac cordintervenait après une longue col lab o ra tion en tre Stevan Joki} et son équipe, promoteurs deRuka u testu en Serbie, et La main à la pâte, opération de rénovation de l’enseignementélémentaire de la sci ence, engagée en France en 1996 par Geor ges Charpak, lauréat No bel dephy sique, puis poursuivie et amplifiée depuis sous la responsabilité de l’Académie des sci ences. Après avoir constaté la con ver gence des anal y ses de l’état de l’enseignement scientifiqueélémentaire et des méthodes proposées pour sa rénovation, les deux Académies convenaient demettre en commun à l’avenir leurs travaux sur ce thème. En France, la mo bi li sa tion etl’accompagnement des professeurs des écoles, depuis 1998, reposait notamment sur un siteInternet, qui leur offre ressources pédagogiques, ainsi que possibilités de di a logue en tre eux etavec des scientifiques ou des pédagogues. La richesse et la fréquentation de ce site ont beaucoup contribué, et après dix années contribuent toujours à l’amélioration et la généralisation d’unenseignement scientifique de qualité dans l’école primaire française. L’accord signé portaitprincipalement sur la traduction, li bre de droits pour la plupart des doc u ments, et la mise enopération, en Serbie, des ressources de ce site, en prenant naturellement en compte lesspécificités pédagogiques et culturelles de ce pays.

A l’occasion de cette sig na ture, Stevan Joki} présenta au pub lic invité la traduction enserbe de deux ouvrages : La sci ence institutrice d’Yves Quéré et L’ingénieur au chevet de ladémocratie, de Rob ert Germinet, malheureusement retenu en France et donc ab sent de lacérémonie. Ces deux ouvrages, traduit en serbe, complètent une longue série de pub li ca tions deLa main à la pâte – notamment les vol umes de la col lec tion Graines de sci ence – dont StevanJokic a assuré avec une grande générosité la traduction et la pro mo tion. Deux conférences furent données par Yves Quéré et Pi erre Léna, devant un pub lic très attentif et nombreux, forméprincipalement des enseignants et cad res qui se sont engagés dans cette pédagogie nou velle oula soutiennent. Un dîner délicieux conclua ces journées, où les en fants et leur fraîche curiositépour les phénomènes du monde, que veulent nourrir Ruka u testu et La main à la pâte, furentconstamment présents à l’esprit des par tic i pants.“

The school sys tems in the two coun tries were briefly com pared and some prob lemsfound to be com mon to both of these sys tems: a still ex ist ing for mal ism in the ways how the sub -ject mat ter is elab o rated, an abrupt tran si tion from the fourth class to the fifth, when the mode ofthink ing and didactical trans for ma tion of the sub ject mat ter jump un rea son ably to a higher levelof abstraction, etc.

Both sides em pha sized the im por tance of early ed u ca tion in Sci ence and Math e mat ics,when the power of ob ser va tion and the ways of iconic and ver bal rep re sen ta tions have to be de -vel oped grad u ally. Both sides also con sider co her ence and or der in didactical trans po si tion ofthe sub ject mat ter to be im por tant at all lev els of learn ing and teach ing, re spect ing, of course, allde vel op men tal char ac ter is tics of the learn ing sub ject.

A spe cific ques tion was con cerned with the ex tent of the “New Math” trend in Ser bianschool cur ric ula. Our re spect able guests were in formed that late Pro fes sor G. Kurepa was avice-pres i dent of ICMI at that time and one of the out stand ing pro mot ers of that trend. Due to his in flu ence, the in no va tive themes “Set the ory” and “Ba sics of Math e mat i cal Logic” have notbeen ban ished from Ser bian syl labi where, in the course of time, they have found their rightplace and proper didactical trans for ma tion.

This is also the right place to thank warmly Ac a de mi cians Quéré and Léna for an in ter -est ing and re laxed dis cus sion that we had.”

The first So ci ety, in Ser bia, which has sup ported and de vel oped col lab o ra tion withFrench Acad emy of Sci ences in the filed of In quiry Based Sci ence Ed u ca tion (IBSE) in the Pri -mary School was the Ser bian Phys i cal So ci ety, which on the oc ca sion of this visit hereby grantsthe DIPLOMA of HONORARY MEMBERSHIP to Prof. Dr. Pi erre Léna, Pro fes sor Emer i tus at the Uni ver sity Denis Diderot of Paris and Mem ber of the Acad emy of Sci ences of the In -sti tute of France and to Prof. Dr. Yves Quéré, Mem ber of the Acad emy of Sci ences of the In sti -tute of France and Pres i dent of the Com mit tee for Sci ences Ed u ca tion of the Acad emy of Sci -ences in rec og ni tion of thier most help ful role in the col lab o ra tion with Ser bian Phys i cal So ci ety in the de vel op ment of new teach ing meth ods for ac quir ing sci en tific rea son ing.

We could say, as a con clu sion, that this visit as well as French-Ser bian col lab o ra tionwas very fruit ful with hope that the same will be in the fu ture. Our next steps will be the col lab o -ra tion in the frame of the Eu ro pean pro ject FIBONACCI (FP7)
