Installation Guide

Electronic Control Unit (ECU) N.B. This ECU has the fuelling components present in the ECU and can therefore be used to control a full

Alpha PRO5 engine management system. It is essential that the management system is supplied with a good source of electrical power at all times. A minimum working voltage should be no less than 10 volts, this is especially so during cold start cranking. This unit must always be located away from any direct heat source of the engine. The ECU casing has been designed to withstand water ingress. However where ever possible it is recommended that the unit is located inside the passenger compartment of the vehicle.

ALPHA IGNITION SYSTEM INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS N.B. The battery should be disconnected whilst carrying out this installation.

Crankshaft PulleyTrigger Disc and Crank Sensor Fitting N.B. 1 Before fitting the Trigger Disc (1) and Crank Sensor (2) ensure No. 1 cylinder is at TDC. (if necessary

reposition after removing the drive belt pulley). N.B. 2 There are two Trigger Disc Mounting Hubs (3A & 3B) provided in this kit. The larger (8 hole) Mounting

Hub (3A) is intended for Series 1 - 4.2 engines and fits to the twin groove crankshaft pulley Part No. C24289.

The smaller (4 hole) Mounting Hub (3B) is intended for Series 2 - 4.2 engines and fits to the single groove crankshaft pulley Part No. C2313. - See assembly order shown in Fig 1

N.B. 3 There are a number of fixing holes in the Trigger Disc (1), however the disc will only fit 4.2 litre

engines in one position as detailed in operation 5 (below). The alternative holes are intended for Series 1 3.8 litre engines that have the larger diameter crankshaft

vibration damper. 1. Remove the drive belt from the crankshaft pulley, then remove the four 5/16” UNF bolts securing the crankshaft

pulley and remove the pulley. 2. Check that the Trigger Disc Mounting Hub (3A or 3B) fits into the recess of the original crankshaft pulley. N.B. 4 Due to age the pulley may be corroded, and this will need removing to allow the Mounting Hub to fit the

recess. However, it is very important that the Mounting Hub is a close sliding fit into the pulley. If the pulley is badly corroded and by removing the corrosion the Mounting Hub is a poor (loose) fit, the original crank pulley may require replacing.

This is to ensure that when the assembly is complete the Trigger Disc (1) runs concentrically. N.B. 5 Where it is necessary to replace the original cast iron crankshaft pulley, alloy pulleys are also

available but may require a recess of the same depth to be machined accurately into the front face to accept the Mounting Hub.

3. Fit the four 5/16”UNF x 2.5” Studs (4) into the Crankshaft Vibration Damper, using the two 5/16” Plain Nuts (5)

locked together (the studs replace the four original 5/16” UNF bolts). - See Fig. 2. 4. Refit the original or replacement crankshaft pulley onto the Studs (4) on the Crankshaft Vibration Damper. Next fit

the new crankshaft bolt Lock Tab Plate (6) onto the Studs (4), then fit the correct Trigger Disc Mounting Hub (3A or 3B). See N.B.2 above.

N.B. 6 When fitting the Tab Plate (6) first remove the locking tab ears intended for the pulley (original) securing bolts. This is to ensure that the Tab Plate (6) wing sections engage correctly into the recess channels on the underside of the Trigger Disc Mounting Hub (3).

5. The Trigger Disc (1) can now be located onto the Mounting Hub (3) with the Trigger Disc missing tooth at the 12 o’clock position and the dot mark (adjacent to one of the teeth) at the 9 o’clock position, it is important that No.1

cylinder is still at TDC. Secure the assembly with the four new 5/16” Nyloc Nuts (7) and Bevelled Washers (8) provided.

6. Remove the two lowest crankcase securing bolts from the left hand side of the engine, (viewed from the front as

shown in the Fig 2.). Replace the two original bolts with the two new 3/8”UNF Studs (9&10), the longer of the two Studs (9) fits the upper of the two locations, (drive belt Tensioner position). Fit and secure the shorter of the two Crank Sensor Columns (11) to this position, with one of the two Plain Washers (12) provided. Next fit the shorter

of the two 3/8”UNF Studs (10) to the lower location then fit the longer Crank Sensor Column (13) using the remaining Plain Washer (12).

7. Assemble the Crank Sensor Post (14) to the (adjustable) Sensor Mounting Plate (15) using the two M5

Hexagonal Head Screws (16) with the two Plain Washers (17) and Lock Washers (18) provided, (do not fully tighten until adjusted in operation 9) – See fig. 3 & 4. Next fit the Crank Sensor (2) to the Crank Sensor Post (14), using the M5 Plain Head Screws (19) and the remaining Lock Washers (18) – See Fig 3 & 4

N.B. 7 The Crank Sensor (2) will require adjustment to align with the Trigger Disc (1) – see operation 9. 8. Next fit the Crank Sensor Mounting Plate assembly to the two Crank Sensor Columns (11 & 13) using the

two M6 x 16 Hexagonal Head Screws (20) with the 6mm Plain Washers (21) and Crinkle Washers (22) provided.

9. Crank Sensor Adjustment - Ensure the engine is accurately position with No.1 cylinder at TDC, then adjust the

Crank Sensor Post (14) so that the Crank Sensor (2) is aligned centrally with the 9th tooth (anti-clockwise after

the missing tooth) of the Trigger Disc (1) (the 9th

tooth is indicated by a dot) - see Fig 5. When the sensor alignment is correct it can be pegged in position using the Roll Pin (23) provided. To carry out this operation first removing the Sensor Mounting Plate assembly, next drill a 2mm hole approx 5mm deep into the Crank Sensor Post (14) using the pilot hole in the Sensor Mounting Plate (15), then fit the Roll Pin (23) to peg the assembly together. This will prevent accidental misalignment or incorrect adjustment in the future.

10. Crank Sensor Adjustment - Refit the Sensor Mounting Plate assembly to the Sensor Columns. When

securing ensure that it is correctly adjusted to maintain a gap of 0.6mm to 0.8mm between the Trigger Disc (1) and the Crank Sensor (2).

Electronic Control Unit (ECU) Mounting N.B. The PRO5 ECU (44) is pre-fitted to the Mounting Board (45). The Mounting Board (45) is designed to fit

at the bottom of the passenger compartment foot well. N.B. Before the ECU (44) can be secured in position the Wiring Harness (46) must be routed through the bulkhead as detailed in the ‘Wiring Harness Installation and Connection’ detailed below

Wiring Harness Installation and Connection The Wiring Harness supplied in this ALPHA PRO5 ignition system has been designed specifically for the Jaguar E Type, it is suitable for both right and left hand drive models. N.B.1 Unauthorised modification to the Wiring Harness (46) will invalidate the warranty of this product. N.B.2 Great care must be taken when installing and connecting the Wiring Harness. The routing of the harness is very important and the notes below must be adhered to, failure to do so will invalidate the warranty of this management system. We therefore reserve the right to make charges for any technical support and assistance required to resolve problems arising from poor installation. The most common problems arise from incorrect ignition 12 volt connection*, and connections to the battery, particularly the ground connection which must go to the battery NOT the chassis. *12 volt ignition switched supply must also provide at least 9v when the engine is being cranked.

N.B.3 The Wiring Harness should be secured to the vehicle and not left unsupported. The cables must not run near any direct heat source. Ensure that no cables run closely to any ignition high tension leads, in particular, the engine speed sensor lead. If these wires do run too close, the high tension leads can induce a signal in the harness that the ECU can misinterpret causing uneven running, bad starting, and even failure to start. Where possible use the Cable Ties (47) to secure the Wiring Harness (46) to the car engine frame.. 1. The Wiring Harness (46) requires routing through the engine compartment bulkhead into the passenger

compartment foot well where the ECU (44) is to be located. To do this first remove the largest of the 3 pedal assembly blanking plates located above the passenger compartment foot well (right or left hand drive), this blanking plate will be replaced with the new Blanking Plate (48).

N.B.4 On right hand drive E type 4.2 Series 1 onwards it will be necessary to carefully detach the brake reservoir from the bracket on the original blanking plate before it can be removed. Temporarily move the reservoir clear of the blanking plate hole, ensuring the reservoir is kept in an upright position to avoid spillage. 2. Fit the new Blanking Plate (48) provided. Before securing the new Blanking Plate (48) in position pass the

Wiring Harness connector for the ECU through the hole in the Blanking Plate (48) then fit the harness grommet into the hole in the Blanking Plate.

3. Secure the new Blanking Plate (48) in position with the original rubber gasket (replace if necessary) using the

two Plain M6 Nuts (49) and three M6 Nyloc Nuts (29) with the (large) 6mm Washers (50) provided. See Fig 13 N.B.5 The two Plain M6 Nuts (49) fit to the two front corner captive studs of the Blanking Plate (48) the M6

Nyloc Nuts (29) fit remaining three studs. 4. Where required fit the new Brake Reservoir Bracket (51) to the Blanking Plate (48) and secure using the two

M6 Nyloc Nuts (29) and (small) 6mm Washers (21) provided. Re-secure the Brake Reservoir to the new Reservoir Bracket (51).

5. The ECU Mounting Board Bracket (52) locates onto the two front corner captive studs of the Blanking Plate

(48) and is then secured with the remaining two M6 Nyloc Nuts (28) and (small) 6mm Washers (21) provided. The ECU Mounting Board Bracket (52) has four elongated slots giving two alternative securing positions for the ECU Mounting Board to accommodate fitment to right hand and left hand models. See Fig. 13

N.B. 5 Before fitting the ECU Mounting Board (45) complete the fitment of the Wiring Harness (46).

4a. Series 1 3.8 right hand drive cars - the Wiring Harness requires routing across the bulkhead below the bonnet

safety catch. Secure the Wiring Harness to the bonnet safety catch (central) ¼” UNF hex screw using the P-Clip (53) provided. The Harness should then be routed along the longitudinal engine frame tube below the carburettors.

4b.Series 1 & 2 4.2 right hand drive cars - the Wiring Harness requires routing across the bulkhead below the

bonnet safety catch. Secure the Wiring Harness to the bonnet safety catch (central) ¼” UNF hex screw using P-Clip (53) provided. The Harness should then be routed between the accelerator and the Brake/Clutch pedal boxes towards the top diagonal engine frame tube below the air filter casing.

4c. For left hand drive cars - where the Wiring Harness does not require routing across the bulkhead the excess

length of Wiring Harness should be pulled through the bulkhead mounting plate and coiled in the passengers foot well before securing in position behind the ECU mounting Board.
