Chair’s MessageFor more than 55 years, Paul Hastings has placed a premium on pro bono and community service. From seeking asylum for a Salvadorean teenager who fled persecution by an international gang to networking with global leaders at a women’s economic summit, our attorneys contribute to organizations around the world that affect change in our communities.
In the past three years, Paul Hastings attorneys have provided more than 100,000 hours of pro bono service to underserved populations. In 2007, more than three-fourths of all Paul Hastings attorneys provided pro bono services, and more than forty percent logged 20 hours or more of pro bono work. We are proud of our attorneys and their efforts.
As a firm, Paul Hastings contributed more than $2.4 million to community organizations in 2007. We are committed to investing in the community, and our attorneys—who volunteer 3,000 hours per month—chair boards, lead capital campaigns, host special events, sponsor law students , and volunteer to make our world a better place.
More than 320 Paul Hastings attorneys are involved with at least one community organization, and 12% of our attorneys have served on the board of directors/trustees or similar management committee of a community organization.
The 2007 Pro Bono and Community Report recaps the year’s top stories. “Paul Hastings in the Community” highlights office-by-office pro bono and community stories that may be of interest to you. The charts and figures summarize key findings from our recently completed Attorney Community Survey, which illustrates the wide scope of our attorneys’ involvement. And, the list of community organizations we support reveals the diversity of our financial and pro bono contributions.
At Paul Hastings, pro bono and community are the foundations of our firm-wide commitment to excellence. We hope that you will enjoy reading this report and learning more about our commitment.

Our Pro Bono CommitmentPaul Hastings is committed to providing pro bono services for the communi-ties in which we operate. All attorneys are encouraged to participate in pro bono work and every approved pro bono matter is given hour-for-hour credit against the total billable hours for each attorney and paralegal. Pro bono hours also count as billable hours when determining associate bonuses.
Paul Hastings provides pro bono legal services across legal disciplines, including: adoption and custody services, asylum and immigration cases; domestic violence and violence against women; incorporation and ongoing assistance to nonprofit organizations assisting foster children; environmental contamination; families of soldiers in Iraq; underdeveloped communities and neighborhoods; food and clothing drives; juvenile death penalty; legislative initiatives and legal reform; museum procurement; landlord-tenant disputes; and estate planning for first responders. Our commitment to pro bono extends to all clients, whether they are individuals, groups or classes of individuals, government agencies, tax-exempt organizations, or interest groups with ties to matters related to: 1) an important social or legal issue; 2) an injustice; or 3) advice or representation about legal options, duties, or rights for those who could not otherwise afford our legal services. To maximize participation in pro bono matters, we have partner and associate pro bono coordinators in our 18 offices. The coordinators promote pro bono efforts by publicizing opportunities and by reviewing and approving all pro bono matters for the office.
As a signatory to the Law Firm Pro Bono Challenge, our goal is to average 60 hours per attorney on pro bono matters. We look forward to surpassing that goal as we continue to work with new pro bono clients.

Pro Bono and Community CommitteePaul Hastings established the Pro Bono and Community Committee (PBC) to manage the daily operations of the fi rm’s pro bono and community involvement programs in each local offi ce. The PBC supports the Firm’s com-mitment to pro bono by overseeing the approval of new pro bono matters and organizing educational and community outreach events.
The committee is comprised of partners, of counsel and associate coordi-nators, and includes two members from each offi ce. Individual offi ces have formed larger local committees and subcommittees to assist with the various programs and events.
The committee is overseen by the chair and vice-chair, and receives adminis-trative support from the fi rm’s Diversity & Community department.
Individual offi ce committees hold regular meetings and some even publish newsletters or notices highlighting events and opportunities taking place in their cities. Additionally, many offi ces publish monthly newsletters and have established rewards programs to pro bono “champions” in their offi ce. The fi rm-wide PBC members meet on a quarterly basis.

Paul Hastings in the CommunityAtlantaPartner John G. Parker received the 2007 Distinguished Service Award from Childkind, a community organization that services medically fragile children and families. Paul Hastings and Parker, a Childkind board member, support Childkind, which since 1989 has serviced more than 500 Medically Fragile and Developmentally Delayed children. . . .Associates Stefanie Jackman, Noelle Lagueux-Alvarez and Candice Voticky received Committee Star Awards for their contributions to the Georgia Association for Women Lawyers, which for eighty years has served the “diverse interests of women lawyers in Georgia.” . . .Partner John L. This program is organized through the Financial Services Volunteer Corps (FSVC), where he serves on the board of directors. Malawi, located in sub-Saharan Africa, has a population of 13 million and an orphan population of more than one million. The average life expectancy is 42, and the country is affected by high rates of HIV/AIDS, malaria and childhood malnutrition. About 11 million people live on less than two dollars a day, and have no access to the banking system. There are 10 banks, two of which are insolvent. There is no deposit insurance system. Last year, Douglas visited Malawi with the purpose of assessing the strength of bank supervision, advising on dealing with one of the insolvent banks, and determining what additional assistance would be required. Douglas and the volunteer team made a series of recommendations to the Malawi Central Bank and the Minister of Finance. In a later trip to Malawi, Douglas worked with Central Bank’s legal and supervisory staff working to design strategies to strengthen their supervisory and enforcement powers, addressing the bank failure procedures, and improving the oversight of change in control, acquisition and merger transactions. For his work with FSVC, Douglas received the Franklin S. Richards Award for Pro Bono Service at the J. Reuben Clark Law Society Annual Convention in February 2008. In accepting the award, Douglas commented, “In the rush of billable hours and the business of law, we occasionally lose sight that law is a profession, and membership in a bar is a privilege, bringing extraordinary obligations. We have been taught to recognize problems and find solutions, with unique skills of reason, advocacy and understanding. Unless we use those

The new Paul Hastings Hope Elementary School is further evidence of our long standing commitment to the region as a corporate citizen and we look forward to continuing the development and progress of the Paul Hastings Hope Elementary School during and after the school has been built,” comments Seth Zachary, chair of the firm.. . .Paul Hastings advised on the establishment and operation of the U.S.-based non-profit organization Fudan University Education Development Foundation established by Fudan University, one of the China’s most prestigious institutions. This fund seeks to leverage Fudan University’s global alumni network to raise funds for the school, with the ultimate goal of helping to build an endowment that could rival the endowments of leading universities in the United States. The cooperation between Paul Hastings and Fudan University marks the first time a law firm has worked with a Chinese university to establish an endowment fund specifically targeting international donors. The key attorneys working on this case include partner David S. Wang and associate Jia Yan.
TokyoVeteran Paul Hastings attorneys in Tokyo support legal reform and humanitarian efforts in Cambodia’s capital city, Phnom Penh, hoping to bring not only a measure of legal stability, but also compassion and justice, to the people of this war-ravaged country.
Since the remaining members of the Khmer Rouge surrendered in 1999, special counsel Setsuko Ueno, as one of the representatives of the Japan Federation of the Bar Association (JFBA), has worked with the Bar Association of the Kingdom of Cambodia (BAKC) in an effort to improve and reform Cambodia’s existing legal system. The BAKC, hoping to learn from its East Asian neighbor, has requested aid and guidance from the Japan Ministry of Justice and the JFBA.
Paul Hastings in the Community continues on Page 27.
Raj PandeCorporate Partner
Paul Hastings supports Sok Sabay, an organization with a mission of “Rescuing, educating, protecting and caring for mistreated children.” Sok Sabay was established by Marie Cammal, a French nurse, and the Sok Sabay Centre of Life houses sixty-two children.
Ms. Cammal and Sok Sabay were introduced to Paul Hastings by partner Raj Pande, who with his family has supported and assisted Sok Sabay for many years. Raj also established the Cambodia Children’s Fund, a New York charitable organization that sponsors and facilitates sponsorship of Sok Sabay, as well as other humanitarian groups in Cambodia. Recently, the Tokyo office was honored to have Ms. Cammal give a presentation on her organization in which she described the plight that children, especially young girls, face on the streets of Phnom Penh.

Paul Hastings Visiting Professorship in Corporate and Financial Law Several years ago Koo and Partners, a Hong Kong law firm now integrated into Paul Hastings, made a major donation to establish a visiting professorship in corporate and financial law and to support the activities of the Asian Institute of International Financial Law, Faculty of Law, The University of Hong Kong. Five years ago, the professorship was renamed the Paul Hastings Visiting Professorship in Corporate and Financial Law. This annual professorship enables the Institute to bring in Hong Kong experts of international stature in the field of corporate and financial law. In 2007, Professor Howell E. Jackson (James S. Reid Jr. Professor of Law, Harvard Law School) and Professor Curtis J. Milhaupt (Fuyo Professor of Japanese Law, Cinelli Enterprise Professor of Law and Director, Japanese Legal Studies, Columbia Law School) served as Paul Hastings Visiting Professors. Additionally, Professor Milhaupt delivered “Post-SOX Corporate Governance Environment in the United States” as part of the Paul Hastings Visiting Professorship Public Lectures Series.

External Pro Bono Training Programs Paul Hastings offers more than 300 firm-sponsored professional training opportunities throughout the Firm. Associates are encouraged to attend training offered by outside pro bono organizations, including the Saturday Lawyer Program, the One Child, One Lawyer Program, and the Atlanta Bar Asylum Project.
In addition, summer associates are eligible to participate in our pro bono program, and a substantial number of summer associates assist on pro bono matters. The firm also sponsors one to three public interest split summer associates who spend approximately six weeks working full-time for a nonprofit legal services organization.
Another example of our commitment to outside programs is our relationship with the Orange County District Attorney’s Office. Paul Hastings participated in the Trial Attorney Partnership whereby our attorneys attended an intensive one-week training session on prosecutorial skills and then worked full-time as sworn deputy district attorneys for eight weeks. Attorneys were assigned to different courts where they conducted the prosecution of various offenders in case filing, pretrial conferences, motions, preliminary hearings, and jury trials.
We have begun a new fellowship program with the Atlanta Legal Aid Society, where an attorney is selected to work full-time for four months with the organization. While the attorney is assigned to the organization, they are paired with an ALAS staff attorney and will get a great deal of writing and trial experience, as well as client contact. They are able to choose the types of cases they work on and have the option of developing a “specialization” during their time with ALAS.

Tokyo, continued Setsuko, together with the JFBA, has been assisting the BAKC in several areas of reform, including the set up of a BAKC lawyers’ training center and a local legal clinic, in developing a continuing legal education program and in addressing gender equality laws. Setsuko is a member of the steering committee of the entire project and a vice-chair of the Gender Project. She is also an active member of the CLE Project, and has delivered numerous lectures and seminars in the past four years. She travels to Cambodia at least twice a year in her function as a vice-chair and has been willing to sacrifice valuable vacation and personal time in her desire to assist the BAKC.
Washington, DCPartner J. Mark Poerio received the 2007 Community Partner of the Year Award from the Maryland Association of Social Service Boards. Mr. Poerio has served as Vice-Chair of the Maryland Association of Social Services Boards since 2004, and as a director and past Chair of the Anne Arundel County Department of Social Services since 1998.. . .Various attorneys have taught at the International Law Institute in Washington DC since 2006. The ILI has provided training and technical assistance to find practical solutions to the legal, economic and financial problems of developing countries. Courses taught by Paul Hastings’ attorney Joseph R. Profaizer include: International Arbitration and Mediation; The Arbitration Process; International Commercial Arbitration; International Commercial Arbitration; The Arbitration Process; Drafting International Dispute Resolution Agreements; and The Mediation Process. Mr. Profaizer spent 36 hours in 2007 working with the ILI.
Additionally, partner Tim Dickinson and associate Kristen Cleary help organize, administer and teach a two-week course that Mr. Dickinson designed for the ILI called “Government Anti-corruption Methods.” More than 70 hours were spent last year planning, organizing and teaching components of the course, including a component on monitoring corruption levels in developing countries and a component on the independence of the judiciary. Mr. Dickinson and Ms. Cleary are in the process of organizing the course for this spring, and we are modifying the curriculum slightly to include more meetings with individuals in the DC area involved in anti-corruption and civil society efforts. They are also designing a new course called “Implementing the United Nations Convention Against Corruption.”

Community. We strive to lead and inspire others to support and give in our communities. We give to a wide range of local, regional, national and international community organizations dedicated to serving those with limited access, resources and understanding and those who are simply less fortunate.
