Program LocationAll summer classes will convene at Punahou School in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Program Mission

To educate those who hold or aspire to hold leadership positions, both formal and informal, in private and independent schools within and around the Pacific Basin.

To empower these emerging leaders with a conceptual framework that defines school renewal as a transformational process.

To provide participants with direct and practical experience as “change leaders” capable of designing, implementing, and evaluating a school renewal initiative within the typical operational and cultural complexities of the independent school of the 21st century.

EDEF 667F - Foundations of Curriculum Topics: Development and management of curricula; factors affecting curriculum development; management of time and resources; examination of the wider picture beyond the classroom related to curriculum.

EDEF 630 - Cultural Diversity and EducationTopics: Issues, themes, debates and practices in multicultural education; promotion of cultural awareness and knowledgeable reflection; skill development for professionals in multicultural environments.

EDEF 610 - Foundations of Educational Theory Topics: An in-depth review of social, philosophical and historical views underlying various theories of education and their application in teaching and learning in independent schools. EDEF 678 - Inquiry in Education Topics: Orientation to research; technology skills crucial to EDEF 649 Field Studies; brainstorming projects; review of the literature available related to project topics; reflecting on practical ideas that lend themselves to 649 projects.

EDEF 675 - Educational Policy Studies Topics: Educational policy and policy-making at various government levels, and related private school law.

EDEA 620 - School Finance Topics: Revenues; expenditures; process and procedures; business management; development and fundraising; planning; organizational change and policy.

Fall 2013/Spring 2014

EDEF 649 - Field Studies in Education FoundationsAfter admission and before attendance, students will be expected to think through, with the leadership of their schools, a project that would work at or be helpful to the school. During the first summer, the project will be refined. In the fall, students will research the literature germane to the project and begin to implement the project. In the spring, students will complete and then evaluate the success of the project. Past projects have included new curriculum thrusts and building school culture.

Program leadership is the responsibility of co-directors, Dr. Eileen Tamura at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa and Dr. Ruth Fletcher, representing the Hawaii Association of Independent Schools. Ms. Lisa Leong serves as dean of students, available on a daily basis during both summer sessions to address needs as they arise.

Program Cost The tuition and fees for the Master’s Degree Program in Private School Leadership are packaged into one comprehensive fee of $19,500 to be paid in three installments as stated below. Additional expenses include the application fee, books, travel, and housing (if applicable).

All checks (including the application fee) should be made payable to HAIS.

$1,000- Deposit to reserve a space in the program due upon notification of acceptance

$10,000- Prior to the beginning of classes for summer 2013 (no later than June 3, 2013)

$8,500- Prior to the beginning of classes for summer 2014 (no later than June 3, 2014)

Suggested Computer EquipmentDuring the intervening year between the two summer sessions, students interact through on-line technology tools with instructors and each other. To participate, students must have access to a computer with internet access via a modem, cable or DSL to a commercially operated server.
