100th Birthday Year Dear Parents, 2013 was a fabulous year for Wellesley and we begin 2014 with much anticipation of another exciting year with two particular highlights beckoning. Our Hall/Gym/Chapel is really taking shape now and we look forward to the opening later in the year (hopefully early May), and of course, 2014 celebrates Wellesley’s 100 years of boys’ education. We are all very much looking forward to our centenary celebrations later in the year.

I do hope you managed to get a decent rest over Christmas and have recharged the batteries for another busy and productive year. Our staff has been preparing the programme for Term 1 and it promises to be active and engaging for the boys.

At the beginning of each year we give the boys two main pieces of advice; firstly, our golden rule of ‘Treat other people how you wish to be treated’, (in other words, ‘be kind’) and secondly, ‘get involved’! The more the boys put into the school activities on offer and their school work, the more they will get back in satisfaction and happiness. I would like to extend a very special welcome to all our new families. During the holidays a database check form was sent to you. If you did not receive it or have mislaid it, please ring the office (562 8030). We need to be sure that all contact details for parents and boys are up to date.

(Left to right) Last day of Wellesley for Y8’s Andrew and Curtis; Senior triathlon; Ben, Henry and Hugh building a kontiki raft.

Emergency and Medical Details It is very important for us to update your son’s emergency and medical details. If your son has a chronic condition and may need Wellesley College to administer medication, please contact the school office for the relevant form. It is a parental responsibility to ensure medication is current and not past its use by date. Wellesley College Newsletter # 1 3rd February 2014

Annual School Picnic – 14th

February at 6.00pm The Wellesley College Parents’ Association, in conjunction with the staff, will host this occasion.

Pack up a hamper and join us for this fun event. The aim of the evening is to provide an opportunity for families and staff to socialise in an informal way. The evening will be unstructured with the teachers present but ‘off duty’ regarding supervision of the children.

Please report to the verandah when you arrive and you will be given a name tag. New parents will be identified by way of a red dot on their label, so please introduce yourself and make our new parents feel welcome.

We will have the field marked so the various Year groups can be together and thus aid socialising with families who have boys of similar age.

The school pool will be open and hopefully the evening will be warm enough for swimming in the sea as well. Children will need adult supervision during any of these activities. Apart from using the toilets, we would be grateful if children remain outdoors. You are welcome to park in front or behind the school.

Staff

Congratulations to Sarah Dahlberg who got married during the school break to Dave Bleier. Sarah will be known to the boys as Mrs Bleier.

Prize Giving

Thank you to those of you who were able to make last year’s Prize Giving. Our guests enjoyed the experience. We appreciated Old Boy Thomas Leggat and our school Chaplain, the Rev. Dr Ellie Sanderson, presenting the prizes. Thomas won the Prime Minister’s Prize for being the top academic in NZ in 2012. Thanks to Chilton St James for generously allowing us to use their facilities for this event.

Year 8 Noah, Issac and Oliver receiving their prizes from the Rev Ellie and old boy Thomas Leggat.

2013 Christmas

The boys made a big difference to the lives of many other families with the gifts they put under our Christmas tree. Each Christmas we put a tree in the foyer and boys bring in gifts. We then pass these on to the Salvation Army to distribute. They were very grateful for the effort made by the boys and families. Thank you to Anne Familton for decorating our tree.

Communication As usual we are very keen to establish open channels of communication. Often it is difficult for teachers to give you their full attention immediately before or after school. Usually they have to attend to a number of children and related issues. If you require an in-depth discussion with your son’s teacher, drop them a note or email asking them to ring you so an appointment can be made. We want to be able to give you quality time. If you have any queries or concerns about your son, please contact the teacher concerned in the first instance. If it is a matter that relates to the Syndicate, contact the Syndicate Leader. If you are still unable to resolve the situation, please contact me.

Website

We are very keen to use our website and intranet (UltraNet) as a communication tool. All school newsletters are available from the website, and the school calendar can be accessed from both sites. Our Ultranet site has a range of more specific links to school resources as well as current curriculum and sports information and class information. You will also find photo galleries of recent school events here. The address for the school website is: http://www.wellesley.school.nz/ There is a link from this site to UltraNet in the top right hand corner. The school UltraNet address is: http://wellesley.ultranet.school.nz/Home/ Our Year 8 Leavers’ Dinner was very special. Human Rights Commissioner, David Rutherford, was our guest speaker and his key message was, “In order for any of us to be free, every other member of the human family must be free too.”

Staff Email Addresses and Extension Numbers

A list of staff email addresses and extension numbers is available on this link: 2014 Contact Details

Staff and I request that you make contact with your son or his teacher for important calls only.

For obvious reasons, staff do not wish to be interrupted whilst teaching BUT WILL ENDEAVOUR TO RETURN YOUR CALL AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. It is not appropriate to call a boy to the phone during class time unless circumstances permit.

FOR ANY CHANGES OF TRANSPORT ARRANGEMENTS IT IS ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL THAT YOU DON’T RELY ON LEAVING A PHONE MESSAGE as in the hurly burly of a teaching day, we can’t guarantee the messages will be cleared before 3.30pm. Calls that require immediate attention are best handled by the office (562 8030).

As always we are here to help but I appreciate your co-operation in this regard.

Wellesley Class Directory/Handbook

Our administration staff have been busy over the holidays getting things ready for the start of a new year. One of their responsibilities has been updating the database in preparation for publication of the Wellesley Directory. The directory of names, addresses and telephone numbers of each family will be ready in the next few weeks.

Civil Defence Mufti Day

Each year we ask the boys to bring two cans of food and a container of bottled water to school to use in case of a Civil Defence Emergency. In the event of a serious disaster there may even be a need to keep the boys overnight. We need to be prepared. Boys can come to school in mufti on Friday 14th February if they bring the cans and water.

Athletics Day Sprints

Homework and Getting the Balance Right.

Apologies for those parents who have read this before but the following is important. Our desire is to systematically build the independent work and study skills of the boys so that they can go on to college with confidence. To do this they need a supportive framework including expectations, routines and consequences from home and school. We want to help them grow skills such as time management, organisational skills, thinking and creative skills and many more that will get them to a stage of being independent life long learners. The older children will be using on-line communication so they are able to access their work to complete learning tasks at home. The younger boys’ teachers will communicate with you about the system in place for their class. The issue of communication is crucial. All teachers will be setting up full class email address contact lists

so as to improve communication and support the directory. Another related issue is limiting the amount of television children watch and computer games played during the school week. We all need ‘time out’ but television and games can become addictive and create ‘dead time’. Ideally the boys will learn to manage their own lives so that they give quality time to their work, physical and other leisure activities. Sensible sleeping habits are critically important for all children, even during the weekend and particularly on Sunday night. A 12 year old may seem to be able to cope with going to bed late, but the reality is they will be operating below par without sufficient sleep. We may be old fashioned, but even 12 year olds should be in bed by 8.30pm—9.00pm. Sorry to ‘go on’ but if we all work together we can produce confident and healthy children who have respect for themselves, their parents and their teachers.

George and JT Oliver, Miciah and Tom Y8 Campbell with his buddy Jackson

GAP Tutors

A big thank you to the Bramley family (Christopher Y8) who hosted our GAP tutor in Term 4 last year.

As usual we are seeking host families for later this year and next so please consider this experience. If you would like to find out more about being involved in this hosting programme, please give me or Steve Girvan a call.

Lost Property

Lost property at school is always a time and money waster. A large proportion of lost property is usually unnamed. If property, especially clothing, is not named, it does make our job of finding the owner almost impossible. To help your child and us please ensure all property is clearly named - clothing labels are available through the Uniform Shop. Monitors will be in charge of all lost property and will ensure that named property is returned to the owner. All unnamed property will be displayed at Performing Assemblies and any items left unclaimed will be given to the uniform shop to sell as second hand stock. We do not carry Personal Effects Insurance for boys’ possessions. This is the responsibility of families. Valuable or precious items should not be brought to school. We cannot take responsibility for these items. Of course, we will always do our best to ensure the children care for their and others’ property.

Old Boys and At the Bay

Many of our old boys have positions of responsibility such as prefect roles in a range of secondary schools. It was pleasing to see so many feature in the end of year Prize Givings. Our annual publication, “At the Bay” has been published. A big thank you to Margie Beattie who managed the project and also to Maxine Rose who more than ably supported this editorial role.

School Development

A school development booklet has been written setting goals for 2014. The booklet also sets out the school mission statement and aims. A copy of this document will be available from the school office early in Term 1.

Uniform / Presentation Standards

The Uniform Shop will be open on Tuesdays from 8.30am - 10.30am and on Thursdays from 12.30pm - 3.30pm. Please note:

Footwear - black school shoes or dark sandals.

All children require an old shirt (Mum’s or Dad’s) to wear over their uniforms for art.

Black shorts are compulsory for PE. (Years 4 - 8 only).

Hats - there are only two types available from the Uniform Shop and they are the Legionnaire style and the

cricket floppy style.

Boxer shorts are not regulation school wear.

All children need sun hats in Term 1 and these should be clearly named.

We also expect the boys to wear their school uniform with pride, in school and out, but particularly during formal occasions such as Chapel services and in the public arena including when travelling to and from school. Hair should be kept tidy, of a reasonable length and the boy’s natural colour. We encourage the boys’ to take pride in their books.

Year 6 House cricket Josh (triathlon) Year 6 House cricket

EOTC, PE and Sport 2014

The first PE focus this term is swimming. The boys will be swimming at least twice a week in the school pool or the sea so they will need to have the appropriate ‘togs’ at school on their designated swimming days. Boys can wear swim shirts and any other appropriate gear like caps and goggles. Wharf jumping is set aside for the Year 6, 7 and 8 boys where mufti togs are acceptable. This allows these boys to have the appropriate school togs for PE sessions. Later in the month the boys will be readying themselves for our School Swimming Sports which are to be held on Friday 7

th March.

The tennis coaching for the younger boys will be absorbed into the PE programme that will operate after the swimming has finished. In the past some boys have opted for coaching by an outside coach during lunch times. This has been targeted at the beginners to give boys the basic skills and encourage them to join clubs. The new programme has the same goals but also to develop the skills of all boys. New equipment has been ordered to help achieve these goals. Boys in Y7 and Y8 will start trialling for the Softball, Tennis VIII, 1

st and 2

nd XI Cricket teams in the first week. A 3

rd

XI Cricket team and a 2nd

Tennis VIII may also be chosen for fixtures if opposing schools have enough players. The tennis ladder will also commence at this time and the Tuesday after school tennis for the top 20 boys (‘A’ ladder) will start in the second week. The boys will be told in advance what days their trials will be. They will be conducted on a class by class basis. Boys in Y6 will be starting cricket tomorrow (Tuesday 4

th February) during sport. Basically, this is a development

year where the Year 6 cricket boys develop their skills and the top players are selected for any fixtures that can be arranged. In Weeks 3 and 4 swimming trials and the school swimming sports will replace cricket on the Tuesday afternoons. The boys involved will be given all the relevant information. Year 6 boys have the opportunity to enjoy tennis at breaks, lunch times and sport sessions during the first term. The school has safety concerns with the size and number of cricket bags that have come to school on the buses and ferry in the past. Therefore, the boys are allowed to bring their own cricket bats, box and gloves on practice

and trial days but not the cricket bags and bulky items. The school will provide any other gear required. An exception is made for inter-school fixtures but it is hoped the majority of gear can go with any parents watching. Large tennis bags are also not to come in on the buses and ferry. The boys not involved in sports teams will participate in a range of different sporting activities. The coaches aim to give the boys every opportunity to show their skills when trialling for teams. Selecting teams is a difficult job and there will always be disappointed boys when teams are named. We are fortunate to have so many talented sporting boys at Wellesley so competition for places is strong. We have tried, with some success, to increase the number of teams and sporting opportunities over recent years to cater for the demand. We will endeavour to do this, where possible, during the year ahead. Just a reminder, that boys are required to wear sunhats from day one of this term. Boys without sunhats will not be able to go outside and play at lunch time, nor partake in outside PE (Physical Education) or sport sessions. We would also ask that parents ensure that their son has his correct PE gear and that on days that they have PE or sport that they do not wear boxer shorts to school. Plain black tennis shorts are available from the uniform shop and can be used for PE and sport. Wellesley caps are available for tennis players and the senior softball team. Outside of these two activities white floppy hats (Year 4 – 8) or blue legionnaire’s hats (juniors) are required. The whole school will be involved in some form of camping experience over the first half of the term. The camps are designed to gradually expose the boys to new and challenging activities while building confidence and relationships with their peers. Camp information will come via your son’s classroom teacher. There are several sporting blogs which provide reports and information. I recommend new parents go to the Sport Admin link and read the general information which provides an overview. Any changes to dates will be changed on the Ultranet calendar if known prior to the event. Postponements and cancellations can be accessed through the phone line (576 2279 or ext. 810). If you have any other queries I recommend you email the teacher/coach or me. Darren Houston

Arts Report

Wellesley offers vocal tuition as well as tuition on the following instruments to students in Years 5-8: Clarinet, recorder, saxophone, flute, piano, keyboard, violin, drums, trumpet, trombone. Violin lessons are also available for students from Year 1. Lesson enrolment is online this year. If your son is interested in learning from one of our music tutors, please access the link below, where you will also find more information and answers to

frequently asked questions about music lessons. http://goo.gl/wR9C2Y

A school instrumental group/orchestra will start in Term 2. This group was small but very successful in 2013. It will be open to any boy who has reached the required standard on a musical instrument (generally about Grade 2 or 3 level, but if in doubt please see Mrs Morgan). The form the group takes will depend on the particular strengths of the boys. This group will be run by Mrs Morgan and Mr Andre Paris (woodwind tutor). Boys in Y6-8 who are interested in joining Choir will be invited to ‘trial’ in weeks 2 and 3 of Term 1. Boys are able to audition in pairs and do not need to prepare a piece to sing in advance, although if they have one they would like to sing they are most welcome! In 2013 a large number of boys successfully auditioned for the Y6-8 Choir, which led to the formation of a separate Y6 choir. Both choirs were very successful and we hope to continue them both in 2014.

Building Update

An enormous amount of building, maintenance and painting work has been taking place over the break. The Hall/Gym/Chapel is powering ahead and we are hoping it will be close to being finished for Term 2. Although the building process is a bit of a nuisance, the wait will be worthwhile. Days Bay House has had considerable work done on it over the Christmas break. The hallway and foyer areas have been re-painted, including some of the offices. New carpet has been laid upstairs. Meanwhile, the usual programmed annual exterior painting has been completed.

Maintaining Standards

Wellesley is a very happy place to grow and to learn. We actively promote care and concern for others. We expect the boys to be kind and respectful to their school mates. Our golden rule of ‘treat others as you wish to be treated’ is a mantra. Our Chapel theme for Term 1 is ‘Building Self Esteem’.

The key ‘Habit of the Mind’ we will be promoting this term is ‘Persisting’. This HOM connects well with the NZ Curriculum key competency of Managing Self. As we all know these attitudes and skills are very important to achieving personal best outcomes and individual well being and respect. We often stress the immense importance of recognising that creating an educated, healthy and well-rounded adult is a long and slow process and does not come about through pressure cooking your children nor getting so involved in their lives that you try and solve all their problems for them (worrying yourself sick in the process). Wendy Mogel is a very experienced clinical psychologist, author and public speaker. Her strong advice to parents is to leave some potential for adulthood. She says too often we expect our children to fulfil their potential by age eight. Her basic argument is to be careful not to burn out children and allow them to struggle sometimes — as how else will they learn to solve their own problems and become independent. This empowerment is fundamental to developing a child’s self-belief. Our challenge is to get the balance right! For parents who had boys here last year, you will notice I have changed the format of the newsletter so it can be more easily read on smaller devices. I have a blog which has a weighting on parenting advice. The link to this is below my sign-off if you are interested.

Lastly, I do wish you all a fabulous 2014. I know it will bring its challenges but do rest easy in the knowledge that we will all work very hard for your boys so they can grow to be the ‘best they can be’. Here’s to a great year! Ka kite ano and best wishes
