TRANSCRIPT
Dear Parents & Carers,
This year, we commemorate 101 years since the landing at Gallipoli in 1915. This is an opportunity for our community to join together in prayer and to remember the role played by so many in the landing and the massive loss of life that occurred. This ANZAC Day, we are challenged to reflect in prayer in the light of Jesus’ teachings and the Easter story: Too easily we make the Resurrection remote from our lives rather than
realising that it is God’s power to transform the dark events that happen to us into places of grace. War has significant impacts but it also sensitises us to the needs of others that can be expressed with love in simple and practical ways each day. Through prayer, faith and openness to God, we too can allow what has hurt us help us, to be loving in ways that we would not have thought possible. Loving Father, show me how I can use and change the hurts and pains I have experienced. As we celebrate Anzac Day this year, may it inspire me to work for peace and love in my family and community (Source: Sr Kym Harris osb).
As a principal I felt proud of our children last Friday and yesterday. They were reverent and showed respect at all times during our special ANZAC Liturgy at school and in the community celebrations at both Cherbourg and Murgon. A big thank you to all the teachers who obviously spent time instilling in the children the importance of such an occasion. I would also like to thank the teachers who children. Thank you also to the parents who allowed their children to march yesterday. Congratulations to the Police Rangers who represented their family, the Police Rangers and the school at the dawn service in Brisbane.
PRINCIPAL REVIEW
All those in Senior Management positions in Brisbane Catholic Education, participate in a regular performance review process to assist in their professional development planning.
Today, Mr Peter Stower – Area Supervisor, Mrs Janet Smith and Mr Geoff Sullivan – Principals, will conduct my first review as a principal. I would like to say thank you to all those in the school community who participated in the process.
EDMUND RICE FEAST DAY
Next Thursday, the staff and students of St Joseph’s will celebrate Edmund Rice day. Edmund Ignatius Rice, was a Roman Catholic missionary and educationalist. Edmund was the founder of two religious institutes of religious brothers: the Congregation of Christian Brothers and the Presentation Brothers. St Joseph’s was privileged to have had Br Mick Hanley who is a member of the Christian Brothers to work in many different roles in the school before he moved to Darwin. We will celebrate the contribution Br Mick, Br Marty and other Christian Brothers have made to our school and our community. During this with a liturgy next Thursday we will present the Edmond Rice Award. This award is presented each year on his Feast Day to a group for Service to others, especially those who are poor or powerless. Thank you to Br Marty who will joining us next week to present this award.

SCHOOL UNIFORMS AND GROOMING
Many thanks to all those families who have ensured that their children have returned for Term Two neatly and correctly
attired in correct school uniforms. Please remember to ensure that ALL items of clothing are clearly marked with your
child’s name. As we head into the colder months of the year, children will start bringing jumpers, tracksuits and other
warmer items that are often discarded as the day warms up and we are left with mountains of lost property if items are
not clearly named.
Have a great week everyone,
Greg Cran Principal
Below is a copy of the letter received from Michael Greenwood regarding a Drug and Alcohol health promotion
activity that we are running in our school during lunch time breaks.
Dear Principal,
I would like to thank you for allowing Cherbourg Alcohol and Other Drug Service to involve your school in our lunchtime based health promotion activity. Cherbourg Alcohol and Other Drug Service (AODS), Primary School Health promotion activity has been developed to support schools in enhancing drug and alcohol awareness in their students, staff and the wider community. All activities are designed by experts in substance misuse and addiction, and provide current research based information and awareness of substance related issues, and how people can seek help for themselves or others.
Drug use is a significant issue in our community and it is important that young people have opportunities to participate in timely and relevant drug education. The National Drug Strategy includes school-based education as one of a number of strategies to enhance student wellbeing and prevent inappropriate drug use in the community.
Research strongly supports the view that relevant and ongoing drug education programs in schools delivered and supported by agencies, resources and the local community are most effective. Working together with parents, caregivers and the broader community, the school is an ideal setting for health promotion and the development of active and respon-sible decision-making skills among young people.
All Cherbourg AODS school based activities are designed on an awareness of an extensive review of contemporary school drug education research (Ballard, R. Gillespie, A and Irwin, R., 1994).
Cherbourg AODS would like to thank you for the opportunity to be involved in your school. We look forward to working with you in improving awareness around substance use in our community. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any concerns.
Yours sincerely
Michael Greenwood Acting Clinical Nurse Consultant Cherbourg Alcohol and Drug Service
Flashing lights now active at St. Joseph’s Catholic Primary School
This week school zone signs are being installed on Angel Avenue.
St. Joseph’s School was nominated to receive these new signs as part of a Queensland Government commitment to improve school road safety.
You will notice that the new signs look similar to standard school zone signs with the addition of a red flashing ring around the speed limit as well as two flashing yellow lights at the top of the sign. The installation of flashing light school zone signs is proven to improve visibility of school zones, serving as an active reminder for motorists to slow down.
So, next time you’re dropping off or picking up your child, keep an eye out for the new signs and make sure you stick to the signed speed limit.

Last week we celebrated Anzac day at school. It was wonderful
to see the students embrace the importance of this event. We
were joined by Clowry Kennell, who shared a wonderful song
he wrote when he was a young boy. He then expressed his
desire, that no person should have to experience war. Mr Trevor
Sanderson from the RSL shared his reflection with the students
and encouraged them to keep the spirit of the ANZAC alive.
It was wonderful to see the students attend the Monday ANZAC
parade and we were so proud of the respectful way they
behaved.
Next Week we have two special celebrations:
5th May- Edmund Rice Feast Day
6th May-Mother’s Day-Anointing Mass
We welcome you to both of these celebrations. We would especially
love to see as many mothers as possible to our Mother’s Day Mass. A
morning tea for mothers will be held in the hall following mass.
Celebration this term:
20th May-Mass-Year 5/6 & Prep
26th May-National Sorry Day
7th June-Marcellin Champagnat Feast Day Liturgy
10th June-Anointing Mass-Year 4
Faith Group will be assisting Fr Michael with an appeal to collect cotton rags. These cotton rags go to St Vin-
cent De Paul to raise money to assist those in need. If you have old rags (cotton), could you please place them
in a bag and deliver them to the office.
Mothers Day Stall
Remember our Mother’s Day stall is open for children to
purchase an item for their special Mum or Grandma in
their lives. Open before school and each lunch time.
All funds raised go towards the Canberra trip for our Year 5/6 student in July.
