IPAD PRIZE BEING DRAWN SOON Kyabram P-12 College Council are encouraging parents to finalise payment of their 2017 Materials and Resources Cost. A mini-iPad prize (per family) will be drawn by the College Council President at the December Council meeting on the 13th December. CHURINGA 2017 The Churinga school magazine showcases the College’s events for the year. This is a great magazine which looks over the year’s events and is a keepsake for students for the future, to remember their years at the College. The 2017 Churinga magazine is currently being finalised and will be ready before the end of the school year. If you would like a copy, please finalise your payment of $15 at the

College office by the end of November. This will mean that you receive a copy and don’t miss out. Generally speaking, the meaning of the word Churinga is an indigenous term and denotes a stone or wooden object which holds together legends and stories. A great way to hold the memories of our school years. I have had a sneak preview of the 2017 edition and it is jam packed with photos and information from all year levels from Prep to Year 12 and so I am looking forward to seeing the final product.

P-6 Principal Report Kate Whitford COUNT US IN

Wow! What an outstanding event to be involved in. To think that we were linked up live along with thousands and thousands of other schools and students across Australia to all sing the same song at the same time is mind boggling. A very big thank you to Mrs Meeking and Mrs Versis for organising this for our students and bringing us all together for such a positive experience.

ATTENDANCE AND ASSESSMENT In the coming weeks, as well as continuing with their teaching programs, staff are reviewing and assessing students ’ performance in many areas of the curriculum. There are a range of scheduled assessments pertaining to reading, writing and numeracy in which all students will be participating in. To ensure your child has the opportunity to be the best they can be it is important for your child to-

1. Be at school every day possible 2. Be well rested 3. Be at school on time after a healthy breakfast.

Remembering Our World War I Veterans This Saturday November 11

th families may attend the local community services.

Next Monday and Tuesday all Primary students will see a puppet show depicting the role of messenger dogs during World War One. This incursion is planned to support our students’ understanding of the significance of Remembrance Day. The show is based on three real messenger dogs from WWI who travelled on the front lines delivering messages to soldiers. The show has already visited over 12,000 students since the Roadshow started in August last year, with great feedback from everyone. It is Government funded for our students.

Music Count Us In Last Thursday at 12.30 pm millions of school students around Australia sang the same song at the same time! This was arranged throught the ‘Music Count Us In’ program which encourages music in our schools. Times have changed; more often these days, we leave the singing to the exceptionally talented or very polished performers, some of whom record with the advantage of sound engineers to enhance their voices. It does make it difficult for the rest of us to feel confident to give singing a go! Children used to sing as a normal part of their day in their play. Singing was also an important way to tell traditional stories and to teach our young. It is considered very healthy to sing. So we are encouraging music in our schools to keep music and singing alive. Music Count Us In is one project supporting music teaching across Australia. Our students had a good experience learning the song and lots of them gave our big sing a red hot go!

7-12 Principal Report continued….

BUSH MARKET The Kyabram Bush Market is on Friday, November 10

th. This is a wonderful community event and our College has

made a decision to support this event by allowing students to attend. Students from the Secondary Campus may leave class at 1:15pm to attend with the permission of their period 4 teacher and must return to school for the beginning of Period 5 at 2.20pm. Students wishing to attend the Bush Market must have the note that was handed out last week to all Secondary students signed by a parent or guardian, and will need to keep this with them at all times while they are out of the school grounds. A phone call will not be accepted in lieu of a note. Students will also be required to wear a broad brimmed hat while at the Bush Market. Students’ behaviour while attending Bush Market is expected to be of the highest standard and anything less will not be tolerated. This includes students from our College attending the Bush Market after school. Students not attending the Bush Market will remain at the College as they would normally and the canteen will remain open. If you have any concerns or queries, please do not hesitate to contact Danny Walsh, Secondary Principal.

LEARNING CURVE NEWSLETTER ARTICLE Ethical Living To quote Howard Gardner from his book Five Minds, “I have nothing against excellence, but at the end of the day, the world doesn’t need more of the brightest and the best, but more of those of good character.” The five minds he goes onto to describe are the creative, the critical, the synthesising, the respectful and the ethical. For nearly a decade, there has been a relentless pursuit of Literacy and Numeracy. I believe this has led to the neglect in the building our young peoples’ social-emotional resilience, wellbeing fitness and respectful and ethical growth mindsets. Which in turn has seen a huge escalation in adolescent mental health issues. The Learning Curve’s focus is on addressing this. Introducing students to concept of what living ethically looks like, sounds like and feels like will sow the seeds to strengthen their characters. These include

acting in ways which they know will benefit their and others’ wellbeing fitness

making choices based on what their minds tell them is the right thing to for them to do

not doing something for personal, material or prestige gain

using their top strengths in their every thought, word and action

being grateful for good things that happen

This month on SchoolTV - School Transitions Whether it is starting school for the first time, moving up to a higher grade or embarking on a journey through secondary school, there is no doubt that any school transition is a very exciting time for children and parents. It means your children are growing up!

However, transitioning is an ongoing process. It can continue long after students have entered their new environment and may encounter difficulties at a number of different stages. These stressors may appear as anxiety and frustration and result in negative or disruptive behaviours. Such behaviours can become problematic making the transitioning process even more difficult for children and parents.

In this edition of SchoolTV, parents will learn practical strategies to assist their child during the transition process and reduce stress and anxiety levels. We hope you take time to reflect on the

information offered in this month's edition and we always welcome your feedback.

If you have any concerns about your child, please contact the school counsellor for further information.
