We are all very impressed…. Must be the great teachers and wonderful school friends that keep you coming to school every day. The research tells us that regular school attendance supports learning, friendship and happiness at school.

Wakakirri – Final Preparations Students are in the final weeks of their Wakkakirri preparations and from all accounts it sounds as though the final touches to costumes and dance moves are just about completed. I am very much looking forward to watching the full dress rehearsal for the first time on Friday.

This Performing Arts Program is truly inspirational in the way it brings the school community so closely together. Many hours are spent by staff and parents enabling the students the opportunity to enjoy performing at the WIN Entertainment Centre. My thanks to all of you for the things you do together for our students.

Education Week Our school will celebrate Education Week in Week 9 of this term; 8-12 September. Mrs Mison is busy organising the events for the week including open classrooms, Student Led Conferences and school performances from our Wakkakirri Performance and items by our K-2 students. An invitation will go home shortly, in the meantime please mark Wednesday, 10 September on your calendars as our day of celebrations.

P&C Meeting –Monday 4 August The next P&C meeting is scheduled for tonight at 6.30pm in the staffroom. All parents are welcome to attend. I will provide an update about School Safety. Please come along if you wish to know more about this or to hear about the great learning programs organised for the term.

Student Learning Resources Coming home with the newsletter this week is a reminder of ongoing school equipment the students need throughout the year. Teachers need parents to send glue sticks to school and to check that pencil cases are well equipped for the term. This includes a sharpener, lead pencils, coloured pencils, rubbers, glue sticks, textas and pens if in the senior classes.

Have a great week everyone, Mrs Hilliar

Reading and Comprehension Check the links on the school web page School Years (top tab) Reading and Comprehension (left tab). Throughout Term 3, student in Stage 2 and Stage 3 will be learning to independently use two routines designed to allow students to transfer their knowledge of comprehension strategies and apply them to independent-level texts in small peer groups. The two comprehension routines are: • Literature Circles • Reciprocal Teaching Literature Circles Literature circles are similar to adult book clubs or book discussion groups. Generally, students choose the texts, although some teachers may decide to assign students to read certain types of literature. As a general rule, texts chosen should provide rich content and offer opportunities for discussion and debate. Students usually read the text on their own and then meet at specified times with their literature circle group to discuss what they have read. The ways to structure this discussion vary. You can simply allow students an open discussion or pose specific discussion questions. Reciprocal Teaching This is a technique used to develop comprehension of a text in which the teacher and students take turns leading a dialogue concerning sections of a text. Reciprocal teaching involves four different techniques: 1. Questioning 2. Clarifying 3. Summarising 4. Predicting The process of reciprocal teaching generally involves each student in the group taking on one of the four roles. The “questioner” begins by posing questions he or she has about the text, which should then be discussed among the group members. The “clarifier” facilitates the group discussion and guides members to look for answers in the text. The “summariser” gives a summary of the text up to that point in the reading. The “predictor” makes predictions about what he or she thinks will happen next in the text. Kind Regards, Mr Ross Classroom Teacher Sports Report

State Cross Country Carnival Congratulations to Stirling Norwood, who represented us at the State Cross Country Carnival held on Friday, 18 July. Library News – Connect to Reading

This year the theme for Children’s Book Week is “Connect to Reading”. Connecting to reading is about enjoying the experience of exploring a story and being part of other worlds or genres. There is a broader social perspective in that reading encourages bonds with other people through not only printed matter but also through other forms of media. We will be holding our celebrations for Book Week in Week 8. Dates for your diary include:

• 27 August (Week 7) – Readers Theatre presentation from Shoalhaven City Library for K-2 students only

• 2-4 September - Book Fair in the library • 3 September – 9:15 – 10:00 Dress-up Day and Parade (K-6)

10:00 – 11:00 Classroom activities with class teachers (K-6)

Students from K-6 are encouraged to come to school dressed as a book character of choice on Wednesday 3 September. Please watch this space for more details…

The Shoalhaven City Library is holding two competitions for Book Week, as follows:

• K-2 students – colouring-in competition • 3-6 students – design and construct a 3D model of a character from any of the 2014 Book

Week shortlisted books

Students who are interested in entering the competition can collect an entry form from our school library. Angela Urquhart - Relieving Teacher Librarian

Name: Ty Year: 3 Type of Calf: Compassionate Calf Why: Compassion is a difficult value to learn – it is a very abstract concept and is about seeing life from someone else’s viewpoint. Many adults find it difficult to understand how it may be for another so this week’s Cambe Calf is even more special from this point of view. Ty was given the role of leader in his reading groups, however another student from the group thought it was their turn and they became very upset. Ty – without hesitation – gave up his turn as leader to calm and assure the student. Ty says he “felt bad for them, because I don’t like to see other people being upset.” Ty, because of his empathetic nature, was able to cheer up the student with this simple act of selflessness. He did this “so I could help them stop crying, because I didn’t like seeing them upset.” He was rewarded because “they felt happy when I did this, and said ‘thank you very much for letting me be the leader.’ It felt really good because I like helping people when they really need help. I was proud of myself and happy to help.” What an outstanding example of compassion, care and consideration; your actions are admirable Ty and your big heart is something to be celebrated. Congratulations on being such a thoughtful, compassionate and kind young man Ty. Such attributes will take you far, and we could all take lead from the example you set. Congratulations on being this week’s Cambe Calf Ty.

FACTSHEET

WHAT IS THE RETUNE?As the final step in Australia’s successful move to digital-only TV, some channels will be changing frequencies. After they’ve changed, you’ll need to retune your digital TV, set-top box or digital TV recorder to find the channels that have moved.

These moves will free up broadcasting spectrum so that it can be used for new services such as mobile broadband. Just like the successful switch to digital-only TV, the retune is being carefully planned to make sure the change is as easy as possible.

Different areas will need to retune on different dates, so to find your date visit the website at www.digitalready.gov.au/retune where you can sign up for a reminder SMS or email.

WHO DOES IT AFFECT?The retune will affect most TV viewers in Australia. But if you are watching TV via the Viewer Access Satellite Television (VAST) service, the retune won’t affect you. If you watch your free-to-air channels via pay TV, your set-top box may be retuned for you by your provider.

Some viewers may find some of their equipment will automatically detect changes to the channels and retune itself, or it may prompt them to retune. If you are missing a free-to-air digital TV channel or channels you will need to retune.

HOW DO I RETUNE?Most people would have scanned for channels when they bought a new television – retuning follows the same process. It is often called “auto-tuning”, “auto-scanning” or something similar.

Start by pressing the “menu” button on your remote then look for your “set-up” options.

Next, try to find words like “channels” or “auto-tuning”.

You might want to write down your favourite channel, program recording and parental lock settings before you retune, as retuning may delete these settings.

If you live in an apartment, you may be using a shared antenna system. If you are experiencing issues trying to retune your digital TV equipment after your retune date, you should first contact your property manager or body corporate.

WHEN DO I RETUNE?Your retune date depends on your location and the TV tower from which you are receiving your TV signal. To find your retune date, enter your address into the “Get retune info” box on the website at www.digitalready.gov.au/retune.

You’ll need to retune your digital TV, set-top box or digital TV recorder on or after your area’s retune date.

Some people within the same town or city will have different retune dates. This is because some areas may be serviced by a number of TV towers.

The retune will take place across Australia progressively until the end of 2014.

WHY DO I NEED TO RETUNE?Some free-to-air digital TV channels will move frequencies to make room for new services such as mobile broadband. You will need to retune your digital TV equipment on or after your retune date to keep receiving all the free-to-air digital TV channels available in your area.

SERVICE DISRUPTIONSThere may be some unavoidable temporary outages to all TV channels in the days leading up to, on the day of, and the day or two after the retune date. These outages are necessary because of engineering work being undertaken at the TV transmission tower. Any outages are unlikely to last longer than a few hours. Viewers should wait until after their expected retune date before attempting to retune their digital television equipment.

To check for expected outages associated with the retune, viewers should enter their address in the mySwitch tool at www.digitalready.gov.au/retune

Channel changes should not impact on the quality of television transmission or reception across the area. If people continue to experience difficulties with reception on a particular channel, they should contact the relevant broadcaster for more information about reception issues.

HELP AND ADVICEIf you are having difficulty retuning your equipment, check your manufacturer’s handbook for instructions on how to retune, ask a friend or family member to help you, visit the retune website at www.digitalready.gov.au/retune or call the Digital Ready Information Line on 1800 20 10 13, 8am to 10pm (AEST), 7 days.

In the lead up to the retune date, we will be providing local community organisations with information so they can help spread the word. In some areas there will also be advertising.
