I will be sending home a separate note soon explaining all of the wonderful things happening here at school for you to be a part of. We look forward to celebrating Education Week with you in Week 3.

Kariong Neighbourhood Centre The Kariong Neighbourhood Centre is in the process of seeking votes to help them obtain a bus for helping both the youth and elderly in our community. This bus would benefit the Kariong out of School Hours Care children transporting them to and from our school, especially worthwhile in bad weather. It would also be available for outings and assist the elderly with transportation as well as Meals on Wheels. If you would like to vote for these please see the flier further on in the newsletter. Wising you all a lovely weekend Toni Skinner

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Kariong Public School’s successful Annual Public Speaking Competition returns for 2019. This competition has been a highly successful initiative with positive feedback from parents, staff and students. Over the years the audience have been entertained, informed and amazed at the ability, confidence and skill of each child.

All students are expected to participate at their class level. Students have free choice regarding the topic of their speech. Students choose a topic they are interested in so they are enthusiastic in the presentation, for example, talk about hobbies, activities or issues that are important to you. Two students will be chosen from each class to present their speech at the grade finals to be held in the hall on Monday, August 12 (Week 4). Two students from each stage will then be chosen to represent our school at the district finals which will be held at Point Clare Public School on Thursday, August 15 (Week 4). Length of Speech: Timeframe

Early Stage 1 (Kindergarten) 1-2 minutes

Stage 1 (Years 1 & 2) 1-2 minutes

Stage 2 (Years 3 & 4) 2-3 minutes

Stage 3 (Years 5 & 6) 3 minutes

Public Speaking Tips

Have an introduction – this is your chance

to grab the audience’s attention.

Body of speech should include interesting facts; make your points ….. use humour if you can.

The conclusion usually has an obvious ending and does not end in thank you, or thank you for listening to my speech.

Use palm cards (if needed) to help you to remember what you want to say.

Practise eye contact.

Vary your tone.

Use gesture and facial expression to convey interest.

Keep to the time limit.
