East End Community Centre

December was a very busy month for YR students! They kicked off the month by promoting the EBS theme “Giving” and encouraged classrooms to bring in non-perishable food items to donate to the Helping Hands Centre. On December 15, a small group of YR students delivered these items and helped prepare for the days lunch at the centre. Every Tuesday during lunch hour, a group of YR students gathered in Ms. G’s room to create Christmas Cards to deliver to the residents of Victoria Landing. Students walked over and shared their handcrafted cards with the residents on December 22. In addition, on the afternoon of December 22, King George had its first dance of the year- the Holiday Dance! The YR Leadership council recruited students for various tasks including making posters to promote the dance, decorating and setting up a snack table. A very successful bake sale and candy cane sale assisted with costs of holiday activities at King George. Thank you to all families who donated bake sale items!

Room F was very excited to add a new addition to our classroom just before Christmas, whose name is Dash! Dash is a robot that can move in a variety of ways (forward, backward, slow, fast, spin), talk, and light up different colours! We use an app on the iPad to code Dash – give him Instructions in a specific sequence to accomplish a task. Before Christmas Holidays, we began exploring how to code Dash as a class by working through tutorial puzzles. To solve the puzzles you have to read and follow instructions very carefully and get Dash to do different tasks in the order the instructions said. The sequence of instructions for Dash are called code. The puzzles are teaching us how to create lines of code, all the ways Dash can move and the different things he can do. We can’t wait to continue exploring coding with Dash this month as we begin our science unit of position and motion! The students will be working in small groups to design mazes with different obstacles that they will have to code Dash through.

The students in Ms. Holt and Mr. Beg’s classroom worked hard from the beginning of the year all the way through to the end of 2017! In English Language Arts class students have further developed their writing skills during the persuasive writing unit. Many students practiced their critical thinking techniques and have even put forth many convincing arguments either for or against the Grinch’s plan to steal Christmas! In Social Studies we have been digging up the past and investigating many of the great civilizations of the world! Students are gearing up to select one of their favorite ancient civilizations for an upcoming project. Most recently in math students have been practicing their skills of adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions while becoming familiar with their practical uses and functions in every day life. During science class students began an inquiry that took them into the very center of the Earth! Students created clay models that represented all the layers that make up the Earth. Students will soon begin an inquiry into rocks, crystals, and shiny gems. The Grade 7/8 students have been great leaders throughout the school and are very kind to others. Our students have paired up with Mr. Duecks’ Grade 3/4 class to mentor and engage their younger peers with mathematics and even some engineering challenges. Ms. Holt, Mr. Beg, and all of the students in the Grade 7/8 class are looking forward to everything the New Year brings!

Grade 7/8 Stewart is now rolling full swing. Throughout the first term, we have done some really fun things. In Math we studied integers. Everyone made an integer game. To end the unit, we all played each others games. This was a blast! In December, Vance Beblow from Microsoft flew in from Calgary to do some coding with us during the Hour of Code using Code.org. In Language Arts, we have been practicing our stations for reader’s workshop. It has been a long process, but we are almost ready to start our centre rotations. We have enjoyed welcoming Mr. Foord to our class to help with this. Social Studies was a real hit. Students en-joyed learning about and comparing a developing country to Canada. Many were able to make connections to their home countries. We concluded the unit with a skype meeting with a teacher at Cheery Education Centre in Kenya. We will extend this by finding ways that we can help out with some of the challenges they face from right here in Canada. In Science, we learned about ecosystems. In the spring we will wrap it up by doing some environmental community service. We have many cool ideas planned for this term. We are super excited to get started!

Mrs. Stewart’s Class Highlights

Welcome back! I hope the break was relaxing and rejuvenating, and everyone has returned to school excited to learn and have a lot of fun in 2018. Just before holidays, two orders of new books came in, and the cataloguing process is in full swing. This means that these books will be ready to check out shortly, so stop in and take a look. No better way to get back into the swing of things than by perusing some great new literature. It will be just like Christmas, AFTER Christmas! There will be more books ordered before the school year is out, and I am always looking for suggestions of what to bring in. If you have a particular title or author you are interested in, stop by and let me know. Devin Foord
